Not by design. More like Incidental Tourist. Picking up the rental in Memphis and looking at the map, there it is. And, oddly enough, right on Elvis Presley Blvd. Home of a plethora of check cashing joints and fried chicken purveyors. And which runs parallel to my route on I-55. And it's early in the morning, won't be crowded, got plenty of time, what the hell!

$45 dollars later, I am waiting in line for a shuttle van, with a bunch of old folks my age, and a sprinkling of kids, with a headset and mp3 player hanging from my neck. We load up and cross EP BLVD, go thru the gates of Graceland, and head up the drive to the Southern Mansion that Elvis bought, at age 22, from a doctor for $100G. There is a vanload of people gathered around a guide at the front door, and a vanload of people on the sidewalk before we spill out. Where did all these people come from at 9:30 in the morning? There were barely any cars in the parking lot.

White couches, chandeliers, and plastic covers on the dining room seats. And a vinyl rec room in the cellar with a bar. I think, deep down, Elvis was Italian. How else to explain the decor, except it looked just like the furnishings of the home of one of my high school friends. I mean, his father's name was Mike Colangelo, doesn't get any more Italian than that, he drove a Cadillac and they had a pool. House even had columns out front, just like Graceland. Man, I spent a lot of time there.

OK. A word about the Jungle Room. When Marc Cohn sang, in "Walking in Memphis", about a "pretty little thing, waiting for the king, down in the jungle room" I was fairly certain he was talking about a sanctuary of orgiastic bacchanalia DOWNSTAIRS away from prying eyes. Au contraire. The Jungle Room was a coupla steps down FROM THE KITCHEN with a PICTURE WINDOW right next to his throne. The Jungle Room was actually the FAMILY ROOM!! Gasp!

Downstairs was the TV room/bar, all black and yellow vinyl, with a pool room adjacent. Ok, but no Jungle Room !!

Out back there is a separate building that Elvis built for racquetball. For all I know, he had Nixon down for a match. This place looks more like a club where the guys might hang out. And a small upright piano is there, ever there. The court itself is now memorabilia central, and another building houses records, gilded and mounted. My favorite one was an album "Pure Gold" that went platinum. I heart irony.

And because I paid an extra $4.50 I can go aboard the two planes. The back of the 707 has Elvis' bed. There should be a plaque above it that reads "Member, Mile High Club"

That concluded my tour.

And so, I went to Graceland. But she wasn't there..... I had to press on to Mississippi to find Grace. Right there in plain sight.

Love unexpected treats for lunch :D
Your unique observations are what make your "reports" so fun to read . . the little asides like this gem --> " My favorite one was an album "Pure Gold" that went platinum. I heart irony."
Excellent group of photos . . and the Marc Cohn made a most excellent dessert.

I have a college friend who is an Elvis freak. He made the drive down to Memphis from Frankfort, KY in a driving rain. "as soon as we got to Graceland, hand to the Lord, it quit raining and the sun came out!" Among the other things to see there is the Lisa Marie, an ex-Delta CV 880 ( a first generation four engine jetliner), that I have worked on and in when it flew for Delta. My mother in law made it also. She came home having had a spiritual experience. I got to drive by it while he was still alive.

I so love Grace's "Elvis Presley Blues"! I sure hope they release it as an acoustic set on the next album.

That was very cool. Thank you for once again taking me on an armchair journey with you! It's funny, back in 1983 or 84 I was driving out to Boulder, CO with a friend, taking the scenic route on a southern swing through the states. Memphis was one of our stops. It was a cold and rainy October day, and we were just about 1 week into our journey, we planned on camping alot, but weather made it not so pleasant, so I do recall finding a cheap motel not too far from Graceland. When I saw your photos of the gates, it popped a hidden memory, thank you for that, and for the look inside Graceland, while I was right there, we didn't go in - mostly because of budgets and trying to make the money last on our meandering trek. It was very cool to complete that journey in my mind all these years later with aid of your photos, TH1

another building houses records, gilded and mounted.

That has to be the biggest collection of gold and platinum record awards in America, by far. I knew it was going to be huge, but I wasn't prepared for the visual impact of seeing them all at once. I suppose only Paul McCartney has more, somewhere in the UK.

I think it's sad that near the end of his life, Elvis was surrounded almost entirely by people he was paying to be there. He was just a big kid at heart, and he wanted real friends to hang with him and enjoy all his cool stuff. I wonder if he knew that most of his friends were fake; only there for what they could get out of him. I think he did know. Money couldn't buy him the things he wanted most in those final years. That's the thing that was weighing on my mind as I left Graceland.
