Soulive Launches Innaugural "Royal Family Get Down" SEPTEMBER 12th, 2009
Northampton, MA - In continued celebration of their 10th Anniversary and the launch of their record label, Royal Family Records, Soulive will host a one-day festival featuring some of their closest friends. The band has invited John Scofield, who will join the band during their festival closing performance, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Charlie Hunter Trio and soul singer Nigel Hall to join them for the festivities. More artists will be announced in the coming months.
"Soulive has always wanted to host our own festival and bring together some of the artists who we've grown with over the years," says Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno. "With this year's Royal Family Get Down we have a lot to celebrate and we're lucky to have such a great line up and a venue that we love in the Pines Theater."
The festival will take place at the intimate Pines Theater at Look Park in Northampton, Massachusetts on Saturday September 12, 2009. The Pines Theater has gained a reputation as one of the most picturesque outdoor venues in America for its intimate seating and tree-lined stage in beautiful western Massachusetts. The Royal Family Get Down will feature the full line of Magic Hat Brewing Company's Fall line of brews!

An Adult Ed class in Westford at 10 AM, followed by a trip into Harvard Square for lunch is my prelude for a trip out the MassPike to Northampton (aka Cambridge/West) for The Nocs 4:15 slot at The Royal Family Getdown. It is at the aptly named Pines Theater in Look Park, a 130 acre recreational area of great diversity, a host today to numerous picnics, a pond side wedding, a ballon festival, and oh by the way, a rock concert. Actually in the adjoining town of Florence (do the natives say, Yo!, I'm from Flo!?) I enter the park, pay the jacked up for today only fee of $10. Did the kid parking lot attendant do that in a bold, entrepreneurial move?. I happened to see all of the park as I guess I missed the intended parking area, and ended around to the other side.
The Theater consists of an open stage, nestled in tall pine trees and flanked on both sides by 30 foot circular stone towers. Heading in through the hedges that mark the rear boundary, and making my way to the front I hear my name called and divert to the side along vtforme Dave and a chain link fence that has the Mr & Mrs P, his brother Steve with wife Gail and son John on the far side. It is getting close to set time, so we head down to the front, joining Jan Gary, John, John, Jackie and Carolyn.
The stage is concrete, and though there is a tent covering with light bars (unused this set), the floor is wet and I worry that someone might go ass over tea kettle. Technical term.
The bands take the stage, and they smile broadly while warily eyeing the wet floor and stepping gingerly to assess the footing. Which must be fine, as no one seems to slip during the show, even as Grace does some low level spinning and dancing.
I can only say that the band seems genuinely happy and in the moment. They have arrived here in rental cars that they can leave at Logan when they depart Sunday morning to return to LA. Scott, in particular, says that the recording process has been really fun, it is more like "just playing live in the studio" vs. TIS's meticulous attention to detail. Speaking of rental cars, the one that Scott, Benny & Cat arrived in is a Grand Marquis, what Cat referred to as a 'grandpa car" when we were getting her suitcase in, but which Scott quietly admitted to me "I love that car" before he got behind the wheel to drive to the airport hotel. Nice to drive a big smoothie down the turnpike. Literally.
The band is sounding really solid. We all know what Benny can do with his axe; in this configuration, he really takes on a foundation role in the music. It is quite remarkable. The way I describe it is that Benny sets the musical floor that Scott can use as his base, while occasionally taking his own forays into the stratosphere. Benny would be described as rhythm guitarist here, but that in no way does him justice. And Scott did everything but set his new rig on fire.

Highlights today:
Some Kind of Ride: The joy of being back on stage, rested, is obvious.
Big White Gate: Grace mentions wiping away tears before this song, and delivers it with soul as I contemplate my Dad, departed 2 weeks ago. As the song ends, Grace makes eye contact and gives me the warmest and yet saddest smile as I nod in appreciation. After the show, she gave me a hug and said she didn't want to dedicate it because she thought she might tear up.
Come into My Kitchen: next up with that funky beat
Bus: Scott and Cat both make a statement
2:22 Scott speaks again.
Medicine: They got it
Sweet Hands: set closes with with drum solo
Post set, Grace and Sharon Jones met up in the green area and shared a few laughs before Sharon was summoned to the stage You can call Sharon Jones a short, solid, female James Brown. You would be correct. The comparison is augmented by the song in which she mentions her home town of Augusta, GA and does the Bugaloo, Camel Walk, and the Funky Chicken....ala James Brown, Live at The Appollo Theater check it out. She delivers a classic old school soul set, complete with 3 piece horns, and a trio of girls brought on to dance with her one song, and a young man later brought on to receive the advice "go easy on me".
The band departed before Soulive's set to get to Logan, and settle in for a reasonable nights rest before Sundays morning flight to LA. And I departed to Northampton to get a good meal...
Scene in the crowd: Jan, Gary, sis, Dave, Nancy, John, Jackie, new posse Allie,Potter clan, but NoMoJo, tending to sick family.

It was a cool show - literally and figuratively - the damp drizzly day didn't diminish our appreciation of the music or stop us from having a great day at The Pines. What a setting - this is a fabulous little intimate outdoor venue. Van mentioned the wetness of the stage floor - there was a pretty funny moment during C'mon into my Kitchen - Grace was introducing the band in this song and as she's about to introduce Benny and Cat - Cat decides to puncuate the moment by stomping those black frye boots she was sporting into a puddle on stage. MAN what a splat she sent out right into my eyes and the rest of us on the front rail... Crack me right up. Gary's got it on "film at eleven" I'll post a link for it shortly - but in the meantime - if you'd like to catch the opener - Here's Some Kind of Ride

I have to say I was mightily entertained by Sharon Jones and her Dap Kings - an impressive show woman indeed with an amazing voice and stage presence. Her Daps were incredibly dapper in their Brooklyn hipster suits and they played their horns with a crisp precision that was a wonder to watch.
Here's the puddle stomping splash - courtesy of Cat - along with a nice C'mon into my Kitchen!

New Drums. Certainly words that don't get said often. How many times can a drummer say that? Just a few times in a lifetime. And Matt has new drums. I wanted to be there. How many times can a fan say that? Even fewer times in a lifetime….
They're sparkly. They're blue. And to quote Teri Hatcher, "They're spectacular" And they are hand crafted in the Green Mountains of Vermont by artist/owner Bill.
So that is why I am up at 5 AM on Thursday for a flight to Baltimore and a drive down to Richmond. And after getting stuck in a middle seat both ways, let me give you a little secret if you are going to fly Southwest. You board by the sequence of boarding pass issuance. So do it online 24 hours before your flight. Now, I'm sure you all now this, but just in case there is one other moron out there. Sorry, did not mean to offend you…
Richmond is the capital city, and the venue is right downtown, almost across the street from the US Federal Courthouse. And The National is a renovated theater, with balcony up, and all seats removed down. There is a grill that is part of it, and it is where I grab a great burger pre-meal. And as a good omen, the first three songs I hear on their sound system are Susan T. "Don't Think Twice", Grace doing "2:22", and Susan back with "Just Won't Burn".
New songs can be heard from soundcheck…wonder if they will be played. The first one has enough of a MMJ feel to it, I wonder if it is a cover.
And though the venue ends up being a good crowd, there are only a handful lined up for GA. I make it to my spot, and meet a couple that discovered GPN by chance on PBS, the early Higher Ground show done by VPR, and have seen them twice before. And as I turn, I see Carrjo stroll in and eventually go say hello. Tommy was not feeling well enough to make the trip, so I send my regards back to him.
Blues and Lasers comes out and kicks some twin guitar, twin drum ass, gaining some new fans in the process. John should feel pretty good that they haven't added a second bass player.
The show is high energy, and clearly the band is happy to be back together on stage. Cat had tweeted beforehand that she had been away so long…one week… she wondered if they would recognize her. And the question I asked Scott after the show was "When did 2:22 become a beast?" He just shook his head and said, "They're all becoming beasts..the chemistry is great!"
On the phone the next day driving to Wilmington, my impressions to Mojo were that 2:22 had turned into the aforementioned beast, and that the old Paris was back.
During the show, a young girl, perhaps 14, squeezed in next to me in front of the B3. She was the girl I knew would sing along to Apologies, (and she did, vigorously) a song that would capture teens if they could just ever hear it. I'm glad it was resurrected for This Is Somewhere.
RICHMOND: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36837161@N04/sets/72157622645655730/show/
My motel room is 20 miles down the road in Petersburg. Amazing to see an abandoned 4 story motel next to the interstate, surrounded by chain link fence. Next to it is a recently re-opened even taller motel, also chain linked.
Kind of a sketchy neighborhood, and I awake in the morning to the sound of hip hop blaring out of a converted old garage, now an auto detailer. Time to roll on, but no rush….
Low stress ride down to Wilmington, and I have a hard time believing I have arrived at the venue, as it is in a residential neighborhood, and is artfully landscaped in adjacent to a small lake totally surrounded by parkland and trails. The band shell is near the water, and water can be seen looking to either side from the seats. There is a good size area in front of the stage where I'm sure fans will stand.
Walking out to my car during soundcheck, I hear my name called and turn to find 2 familiar faces sitting on the curb, Jill and her son Ryan. They moved to NC from Montpelier, and I haven't seen them since Christmas 06 show, or maybe Waterfront 07. Jill lives in Charlotte and Ryan is in college in Durham, so they have had some miles behind the wheel today, as well.
Grace and Cat are lookin' goodtonight, again. Grace in short lavender dress with chunky high heels, and Cat in electric blue with suede, over the knee boots. It's breezy for these gals in short dresses..I got 2 words for ya…Air Dried….
The show starts with a bang, Some Kind of Ride, but for me the clear highlight is World Premiere of Oasis, the song I have heard snippets of at sound check the last two nights. Could well be the single when the new album hits next year. The set ends with NBTW and Matt banging out the final 10 beats. The three song encore starts with Grace commenting on her short dress and if anyone got pictures of her underwear. Cat retorts that if anyone got pictures of her underwear, "please photoshop some goodies in". And the night ends like it started, a raucous version of "Sweet Hands"
WILMINGTON: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36837161@N04/sets/72157622679319332/show/
Since it is 6+ hours to Milledgeville, then 7:25 back up to Roanoke, I decide to take the day and goof off and slowly make my way to Roanoke. Late checkout, and walk around the boardwalk riverside. Wilmington is a pretty city, the main road boasting a beautiful fountain right in the middle of it, and a National Cemetery. As I head across the state, I veer off to visit UNC- Chapel Hill and marvel at the beautiful campus. This is a big time school. It is truly gorgeous, but I bet Duke and Wake Forest are equally charming. I make it over to Burlington, NC where I hit a family BBQ joint for dinner and find a Motel 6 by the highway.
The road over to Virginia from here is 2 lane highway, and I feel back in time. Making it to the Virginia border, I see a plane flying ahead of me, trailing a banner. I see a sign for Martinsville and NASCAR creeps into my brain, and when I see the Goodyear blimp in the distance I realize…I'm gonna get in a NASCAR traffic jam. And I do, but it is only for about 2 miles. I get to look at race fans and their rides, for about 20 minutes, before peeling off on RT 220 north to Roanoke. This is a nice ride and as I am about 10 miles away, a sign by the side of the road catches my eye. Red and white it screams Absolute Auction Mountaintop Chalet and 340 acres. I gotta turn around…
I head up Easter Mt Rd and it gets narrow and scary. After a 180 degree switchback, it turns to gravel and is only one lane, dropping straight down in places.. I get up on the property and the view is utterly unbelievable. I decide then and there, I win MegaMillions the next few weeks and I'm coming back to make it mine! Wow…
DAY OFF: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36837161@N04/sets/72157622679451704/show/
Returning back down the road, I find my way in to the city, locate the venue, and then head several blocks into the city center to find a bar to watch the Pats game in London. Bars here, people smoke. It's gross, but I have no choice. A bite to eat, several cokes, and a Pats win later, I'm off to take a few pics of The Traubman Museum of Art and head to the venue, where I go in for soundcheck. This venue was the 1922 high school for the city, recently remodeled, lots of various non profit offices, art all over the walls, and a gorgeous auditorium on the second floor. I head all the way to the balcony and the sound board and talk with Chuck for awhile before settling into a seat to listen. Between songs, Grace spies me and yells out "Hey Van, you came back". Guess I missed a pretty wild show in Milledgeville…
The balcony is locked, and I decide to just hang out there until the show starts. A few people with connections, apparently, come up, and I decide to leave my center position to move down the side of the balcony to the very front over the B3. First time, by choice, I haven't been right at the stage, but it is such a nice venue, I want see what it's like. Plus, they are sweet upholstered arm chairs up here where I'm at. Nameplates on each so you had to donate to get a chair named after you. The lighting guy here is big on red spotlights. Not good for pics, but at least he is rotating through his options quickly.
Before the show, downstairs, I overheard the volunteers say that there would be people dancing down front. Good sign. And I spoke with the Artistic Director, Dylan. He had actually booked and promoted the show himself on short notice. Not part of the regular series. He said "I'm a sucker for these guys" and mentioned he needed about 100 walkups to breakeven. I hope he made it.
Tonight featured another World Premiere, Things I Never Needed. This song was added on the fly, Grace asking the band if they wanted to play something new. Scott nodded his head, fast. Hell, so did I. This is a slower song with Grace on mic with acoustic. It is nice to hear new songs released into rotation.
My flight is at 1:20 in the afternoon, and the ride is 4:45, so as the stage is cleared out quickly (the band is headed back to VT tonight and have 2 drivers so it can be a straight shot) I say goodby to all but Grace and Scott and hit the road to get 160 miles in before rousting an innkeeper (wearing her onesie) out of bed.
The flight home is uneventful, and as I hit the road out of Manchester airport, I realize I have driven 1185 miles and the only tolls I paid were on the NH highway headed home…ROANOKE: http://www.flickr.com/photos/36837161@N04/sets/72157622555101091/show/

Tedheadone . . could you please supply a setlist for the Wilmington show ?
It hasn't appeared on Archive and would be nice to add it on the setlist.fm site.
If anyone knows the setlist for the October 24 Deep Roots Festival in Milledgeville, GA that would be appreciated too.

Oddly, my excitement/anticipation/desire level of getting to HOB at 5 PM to get a table and eat, in order to get to stand in the early line at 6:30 PM for a & 7 PM door to stand for an hour before getting a chance to stand for two more hours and two openers in order to be standing down front for the 10 PM show is pretty low.....
But I know better then to let my dread of hours on my feet get in the way...not when I have faith that salvation will be my just reward.
After a nice bite with Jay, Nancy, Wally, K Beri, Steve, Laura, Steve's cousin Ron and Linda and friend Paul & Katie, we get in line outside House of Blues. For those that are unaware, HOB sits in the shadow of the Green Monster of Fenway Park. I am certain that a David Ortiz blast has bounced off Landsowne St and, thru the open door, rolled right by the stage. And I have to admit, for those willing to stand forever, and want in down front, this is the way to go. Just our little secret, ok?
As we stand there, a van pulls up and opener Sean Bones pours out and they hustle their equipment inside. Talk about just in time delivery. They are so late that when they take the stage, the keyboards are not properly setup and the rest of the band vamps while the stage crew gets it rippin.
This foursome is from Brooklyn and are ok. Since a recent Lefsitz discussion on prerecorded music at live shows, I am paying particular attention to the drummer Ryan. At at one point I notice he picks up a small wired device and fiddles with it. As the song is ready to kick off, he presses it, and some prerecorded beats come up before he hits his drum. A-HA! But he makes not pretense, taking his time to stop it after the live musicians have finished the song. and this was part of the basis of the discussion..is it a truly bad thing when the audience realizes it's happening. ergo, does anyone really believe that Brittany is singing into that mouthpiece as she dances her ass off? Or Madonna for that matter?
The couple next to me is there for Brett, and have never heard Grace. The two girls behind me are both there for Grace and have never heard Brett. The couple leave after Brett's sett. I wonder if the girls would have left if Brett was headlining. I wonder if I would have. {My position may be egocentric and one of some arrogance. If I don't know the music of an artist, why would GPN be opening for them? If I don't know them how can they be any good? I had heard of Brett, but hadn't really heard him}
The couple is wondering if Brett has a band, this seems to surprise them that that there are drums, guitars, and bass lined up. And a full band strolls out, the players in suits with loose collars and ties, and Brett in new jeans , shirt and scarf. Brett is barefoot and the first thing he does is a toe stand. A distinctive voice, but a real engaging personality, mannersims, and slow and semi-subtle dance moves. I like him at the start, not quite as much by the end of his set. His drummer partakes in the same activities as the previous one. This guy has a grey/white device that is perhaps12 x 9 inches and set on a stand, angled, to his left. Before one song, I notice he fiddles with it a bit. When the song is ready to go, he starts with a downstroke on this device, which sets off an underlying rythmn section that he drums on top off. I think it is ended the same way. I bet fewer then 10 people in the whole place noticed. Is it wrong? Everyone realized The Who wasn't playing the intro to Baba O'Reilly live on stage... I think when it is just simple rythmn section slipped in to enhance a song, it's wrong. When it's blatant and obvious and instruments unable to be on stage it's ok. I reserve the right to reverse my position on this.
The couple leave after Brett and two young ladies slip in, one I post-show ask if she is Jenny, from the Wilbur show Sep 08. Indeed it be. She is flattered to be remembered, and in returns recognizes me as the guy she stood beside at that show as well.
After a mercifully quick break, the Nocs take the stage. Grace is last one out, and the band has already started into Stage One of a three stage blast-off, Medicine. And rarely, in the course of a band's trajectory, do fans get a night when they get six songs they have never heard before. Oh, sure, if they track down some archive.org performances they might have had a chance, but to get 'em live, in one sitting, is pretty rare. Think about it. Won't happen again for a long time. By the time the album comes out, I'm sure one or two might trickle out before the full court press of supporting the new release swings into gear. So many new, it's hard to remember each one today!
And of the six songs rolled out, for me the stand out is Oasis. Matt's beat, Cat's funk, and Grace's powerful yet ethereal vocals anchor dual guitar work that could very well stretch out live into GPN's own "Blue Sky".
http://www.flickr.com/photos/36837161@N04/sets/72157622843459270/show/
Scott has a '50's lap steel guitar for Things I Never Needed. During the song, Benny hit one little fill that was so sick Scott just stopped, looked left at Benny, and chuckled. And a very strong night for Cat on both bass and vocal harmonies. At the beginning of 2009 I noted that "harmony would be the New Frontier" Great to hear it happening. It is an extra dimension, and one that allows Grace to dial it back just a tad vocally if needed.
Not that there were any questions about it, but this band has jelled, is fully formed as constituted, and is on a roll.
So the only burning question is...Will Ben have to wear a tie every night?
Scene in the crowd: TFN Linda and sis Margaux, OneawayMan J, Sparky and Peggy Potter, brother Steve and fam, Todd with Rita from Waitsfield, Justin and Nate in from LA, fabulous Adrien, Jeny and Jamien from BU

OK where to start...
Showing up solo, with a good package on already, I nearly got into it with the wrong street person outside.
Then I couldn't give away my extra, finally gave it to a street hustler for $10. No doubt he turned around and sold it for $30.
Anyway, made it safely inside. Pleased to see that it wasn't sold out and there was plenty of room to move. When I saw Derek Trucks and again at moe., the place was packed like sardines to the point of being unpleasant. Thursday was perfect, plenty of room to move around, socialize and get another cocktail.
Caught the last Brett song. It was kind of loopy, but had a good melody and was jammed out somewhat. From what my friends told me, I'm glad I missed most of his set.
Anyway, the band came on in SUITS...WTF!
I know that the ladies like to dress up and they look good in those slinky cocktail dresses, but SUITS on the guys?
C'mon. Were have the jeans and t-shirts gone?
I agree with TH1 that it was a stroke of genius to replace Bryan with two players, a bass AND another guitar.
It makes comparing the two bands very difficult.
From what I heard they are really hitting their stride, integrating the new players and gelling well together.
I am VERY impressed with Cat's playing, her sound is distinct and she's not afraid to drop a few bass bombs.
I was able to hear Benny much better than last summer, he's found his niche and he brings a lot to the rythm section.
His fills are really sweet, precise and clean.
As for the setlist:
Medecine was strong- Grace, the medecine woman, really does have what we all need.
Joey-at least she got it out of the way early
Mastermind-nice... I miss Bryan's rambling bass line at the beginning, but it rocked
Apologies-Yes, Cat's harmony definitely improves this one
Oasis-my favorite of the new songs. It's got a groove that's a mile wide. I'd love to see them jam this out more. It could go anywhwere.
Good Bye Kiss-OK, I think I need to listen to it a few times more to appreciate it
Mary-It's a bona fide hit. Everybody knew the words and was singing along
Gate- This song is a classic, archetypical Grace.
Things-Steel guitar was excellent.
Stop the Bus- Rocking yes, but I wish they'd really let it out. The same thing with Oasis-get out there and jam it.
Low Road & It's Only Love- no comment, need to listen again
Paris- wanted to hear the French phrase, mais non..
Tiny Lights-lost the momentum from Paris
Sweet Hands-good high energy to end the set
Watching You-Rocking
White Rabbit-closed my eyes and flashed back to the early 70's-LOVE THAT SONG and Grace nails it
NBTW-sweet seranade back out into the city night
They sounded much better than in August. Pleased to see the new players integrated thoroughly.
My complaint is that it all seems so packaged now...the suits, the fake flowers on stage.
Same with the music, it's great that they're playing well and the songs are so tight, but for me they've lost that jamband sound.
There aren't any Over Agains or Cortez the Killers in their lists. Every song is played note perfect in a neat arrangement.
It was a great night and they probably played technically better than ever, but for my two cents..and believe me I know that's all it's worth.
ditch the suits, loosen up and jam more
see you in Burlington!

Please don't ditch the suits - some of us love the new look - we loved the former look, too, but the metamorphosis sparks!
Are the flac files up yet for the Boston show? I had to miss this one but had family and friends there.

there definitely were tapers so i imagine it is just a matter of time until something surfaces. i look forward to hearing this again, particularly the new songs.
i didn't actually even notice that the guys had suits on myself. i noticed the moustache. friends with me thought matt looked like a cross between the guy from "my name is earl" and ron jeremy. in other words, sheer perfection.
i did notice that the songs didn't stretch out for too long and i personally like that better for this style of music. i like some jam band noodling sometimes but not for GPN.
new songs sounded good, definitely catchy with some good hooks which i feel were missing on the last record.
last observation is that i think grace and the entire band just seem perfect when she is at the organ. when she sings with no instrument or when she plays guitar it just doesn't feel right to me. i don't know why. it isn't the sound, something to do with how they all look. they just look so much more natural to me with grace at the organ.

Thank you Tedheadone . . it's nice to read your recap as a refresher course instead of a vicarious ride for once !
So grateful I was able to do the HOB show as part of a longer trip . . remembering it will produce an instant smile for a long time to come. Hope a taper's capture of the show does appear so it is preserved and can be shared with other people.
Was already sold on Oasis and Things I Never Needed . . Tiny Lights was love at first listen even before it ended . . I liked Low Road though find it hard to recall in detail now . . but need another listen for Good Bye Kiss and It's Only Love - don't remember much about them at all I'm afraid.
All in all . . much love for the entire set . . the band was beyond awesome.
Of Ts and suits . . am a big fan of t-shirts & jeans - wear them as often as I can get away with it . . but agree with tekawitha - I like the band's current look - it adds a spark - read star element - to their stage presence.
RE: Brett Dennen . . we caught about 35 minute of his set. I'd been investigating his music and liked some of his recorded songs. Wasn't sure I would like his live performance based on YouTube videos I'd watched but surprised myself - I liked most of what I heard. He has to know he is less than graceful so found his unselfconscious / self-accepting awkwardness sort of endearing.

Really felt the energy of the band last night...also saw the show on Monday in Baltimore and this one was even etter (if that's even possible!). Loved the set list variety and changes and especially the a cappella ending of NBTW to finish the night. Fantastic show.

This was my third GPN show and while impressed by the new very talented personnel, it would've been a great experience if the sound man was awake. GP's vocals were buried so far back that I wasn't able to to hear 'the voice' much less make out any lyrics. Some needs to have a 'come to Jesus' meeting with the boy. While the new bass player is perfect, the sound man has got to know how to mix the band. But ya know, I'll be back to see them again.

Opening band last night was Robert Francis who fit in better with The Noc's than did Brett Dennen. Brett's bare foot dancing got a rise from the many young ladies in the house. He did have a cool Martin he played.
Posse peeps Michael & Lianne, Cris I think the crowd grew towards capacity as Grace and The Noc's took the stage Stop The Bus . Afterwards Grace tells the bus story from the 9:30 Club show.Only Love , Medicine , and Low Road.(2 new 1 sorta new). Falling or Flying which Grace was fantastic and looked nice in that short thang she was wearing. more new stuff Money, Goodbye Kiss, and Oasis. Scott added some nice harp to Goodbye Kiss. Benny and Scott tore it up on Oasis. Ah Mary and Big White Gate sing along. The the last new song of the evening was Tiny Light. Sweet Hands with drums followed
The Noc's returned for Paris La La. Then a kick ass Watching You. Ending with N.B.T.W. I and II.
The boys need to lose the suits they look like a disco band.

Aww john - I guess it's a matter of opinion - I'm with Tekawitha - I like the skinny suits, I think they look sharp. They do create a more signature look than jeans and t's. Nothing at all against jeans and t's, it's really the music that counts. But you can tell that they are going for total package here and I do believe they pull it off just fine. I'm definetly a disco sux kinda gal - and this band ain't disco.
again - just my opinion.

Depending on the room, sometimes it can sound fine in certain locations, and awful in other locations. Not sure what happened at this particular show, or where the folks were located who say it sounded bad, but I can say that it's never going to sound great everywhere. Places where the sound will usually be less than perfect include the first few rows in front of the stage, back of venue, under balcony/overhang, back of balcony, way off to the side.... places where it should usually sound pretty good - closer to the middle, about 1/2 between the mixing board and the stage... at the mixing board, etc...

They say it never rains in Southern California. They lied. And so...Trapped. Like a rat. In my car. All day. Picking up the rental at noon at LAX, I pull over to get my gearings and it starts up. Oh, it's just a misty, sprinkly, cruel, indication of things to come. Weathercom said scattered showers...so why even bring a rain coat. But what am I going to do anyway for the next six hours? Christmas shop on Rodeo Drive? I think not.
So I do make my way to Ralph's in Marina Del Ray, a supermarket that I know sells containers of berries, straw and blue, so I have something to nibble as I drive around, basically looking for the Wiltern. Now, I am sure most of you would at least get the address of the place if not a map. Not me. I think I'll wander around until I stumble across it. I do make the assumption that the Wiltern might be on Wilshire. Boulevard. So I get on Wilshire at the Pacific Ocean and drive East. And just when I think, "no way" there it is. On the corner of Wilshire and Western. It has a bluish hue to it, like copper, turned. Actually, it looks like a building Clark Kent would have worked at in the '30's...waiting for an excuse to slink into that Superman fullbody speedo. And, well, I would have been right, it was built in 1931.
But about now, my 4:30 am alarm catches up with me and a side sreet turns into a rest stop for an hour or so, before heading to La Parilla "A real Mexican Kitchen" where gringo can ask stupid menu questions before ordering enchiladas. Which basically, eventually, demonstrates to me why there is a glut of natural gas in the US right now...
It's raining again, hard, when I exit at 6 PM and head back to the Wiltern. Rain keeps me out of the line until about 10 minutes before doors, which still works out OK. The Wiltern has a pit area that the first 200 peeps can go down to, and I do. And secure my usual spot along the rail. The couple, my age, next to me are there for Brett, having discoverd him opening for Jackson Browne. (Post GPN, they say they have "discovered" GPN opening for Brett Dennen. And there, folks, is the answer to the question about why do a pairing like this..) When I ask the four teenage girls to my left , they're there for both, but haven't seen GPN before. Pst set, they are adamant in excaliming they will be at next GPN show in LA. Come to think of, they are, and there are lots of, goons in attendance. Ah, LA.
Opener Robert Francis is a Springsteen wannabe. That is not a slam, a description. People take the word wannabe as a slam. But face it. Who wouldn't wannabe Bruce Springsteen? Oh, at one point Tiger, maybe, but I bet even he would rather be The Boss right now. And by Boss I mean...hmm. not sure where I was going with that one.
He is an LA guy, happy to be back in LA, where his sister comes out and joins another singer on two songs for back. He announce he is going to do "like the first cover I have ever done, on stage. Its a big song. I hope I remember the lyrics"He doesn't. He starts into "Wild Horse" and gives a really terrific reading of it, quite interpretive, until he does forget the lyrics and mumbles witha smile.
The Nocs take the stage and open with Some Kind of Ride, Grace coming onstage last. She is wearing a dress that is short, but then is even shorter in the crucial frontal zonal area. The band is in great form.
Hightlights Tonight:
Ah, Mary. Matt has some new licks
Oasis: My favorite of the new bunch.
Only Love: Catchy
Money: Scott rips
Good Bye Kiss: On the last night of the tour, dedicated to Brett. "It's a sad night, but" (HEY! ed comment) "we'll get thru it ok"
Colors. For Obama. {I noticed in the editorial of current issue of RS read on the plane, that they had endorsed O (first time ever) and are questioning both his performance and their wisdom in handing out their endorsement. Then a stinging article on the Wall St makeup of all his financial advisors.}
Paris: I think the center stage fans might have actually SEEN Paris during this song.
Medicine: Rollicking version which is the vehicle for the 5 way drums tonight.
NBTW: At the break after solo intro, Grace says, if you're not on your feet, I want everyon on their feet at the count of three. Ready? THREE! Ha
Great set, LA conquered, onto San Francisco. While I suspect their might be some collaborations with Brett in his set, they get outweighed by my long day. I leave pretty quicklyand get about 150 miles under my belt and sleep before getting up and posting this.
On my way out thru the lobby, I catch the opener and tell him to keep Wild Horse in his set list. He did a really fine job of it. Now, if he can just complete the lyrics...

My daughter raved about the show(her second one in LA) <except> their set was way too short! She had never heard of Brett Dennen before and said he was very strange with a "weird voice". They left after a few songs wondering why Brett was the headliner....

Leaving LA after The Nocs to get a head start is a good thing. But apparently I missed Ben running across the stage in his underwear. At least that what he told me on the Streets of San Francisco, Karl Malden style, before POOF! He vanished
They say "high wind alert all the way to Tejon Pass." But with no visual cues, I assume my KIA economy car (roll up windows! so last millennium!) is just skittish. Clearing the county limit and entering in to the State Park, the road climbs and soon I pass a sign that says Elevation 2000 feet. That is the base elevation for a lot of the New England ski areas. And then there is one that says 3,000 feet. Hmmm. And finally, I pass one that says Elevation 4,000 feet. Wow, that's the summit of NE ski areas. And here I am on a highway in SoCal.
And then a FRIGGIN' UNDERFED TUMBLEWEED rolls right in front of my car. Maybe not so underfed, it is about 4 feet high. I don't think hitting it would cause any problems, but the avoidance of one could run you off the road. I make about 150 miles before pulling off at Rt 41 in Kettleman City for a Super 8. Interesting layout, you enter the room in the bath shower area, and the room is beyond. So no windows on the entrance side, which I like because I always struggle to close the last
