R.E.M., the Athens-based band with roots in Macon, issued this statement today on its website:

"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening." R.E.M.

(AP) -- The group composed of singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills released its debut album "Murmur" in 1983. Drummer Bill Berry was also in the band but left the group in 1997.

Mills grew up in Macon. Berry moved to Macon as a teenager. They met and formed a band in Macon before meeting Stipe and Buck at the University of Georgia.

The message online said the band members "walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished."

The group gained a great amount of its success in the 1990s. It released back-to-back multiplatinum albums and had hits like "Losing My Religion" and "Everybody Hurts."

Their last album, "Collapse into Now," was released in March.

The only band that mutters.

Really, REM was the first band I ever truly felt passionate about.
