SO the Nocs are coming to my part of the country. I am so excited....no travelling, no plane fare, no hotel fee's. And due to the fact that I just had my high school reunion, keeping to myself the number, I have a whole slew of people going with me that have never seen them live before. As we all know, seeing the Nocturnals live hooks the concert goer everytime. Can't wait!!

NOC ON

So psyched to attend our first live show tonight in KC. We just discovered GPN in late May and are so excited to get a chance to see them live so quickly! From what I've read here, and what I've heard off their CD's, there is no way we will be missing any shows within driving distance in the future!

Also looking forward to them playing the Roots Festival in Paola, KS in late August!

who has got the deets on this show? sounds pretty loose all kinds of rain, mud, band members getting their teeth knocked out during the set...plus they left a ton of bullets in the arsenal after colorado, and had a luxurious day off in denver. red rocks was rippin and im wondering how they followed it up since it was clear they didnt want 2 get off the stage for the movie. do tell...

The show last night at Crossroads was excellent. I think they played for about two hours. Had a question for band members. Is it hard for them to get up for concerts when for whatever reason the crowd is not very good? Last night, I don't know why, but for that fantastic lineup, there were only about 400 people in attendance on a gorgeous night.
I just wondered if the band members notice when the crowds are down. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and the previous acts certainly didn't seem to mind. Excellent show with Grace and the Nocturnals simply amazing.

I just wanted to add that Grace's voice was so powerful. The new record is amazing and I loved hearing/watching them perform White Rabbit.
Hope to get to see them next time they are in town which is ... when?

Sep. 25th with the Avett Bros . . and welcome to the board.

This piece makes me wonder if the mix of music and the very late hour that GPN was to play had any effect on attendance . . .

think that is the first time anyone has compared Grace to a Vargas girl :D

don't remember Humble Pie before either . . might be fun to keep a list of comparisons - ha !

Thanks for the welcome. I'm kind of puzzled by the lack of attendance. It was about 10:45 I think when GPN went on. It was such a nice night though, weather wise, that people that were there were in nirvana. If you have patience for somebody with no knowledge of bands ... a.) how do the performers on last night's bill get paid? Is it a set fee beforehand?
Or do they make money off the ticket sales? With four or five individuals/bands playing for five hours, that's a lot of people to pay. With just 400 people attending,
how much does an accomplished band like GPN make in a night like that?
b.) I read they use a huge bus donated by Willie Nelson? I can only imagine the mileage on that thing. How long will the bus last?
c.) Is Grace Potter dating/married to the drummer?
d.) How the heck did somebody in the band lose a tooth last night? Grace Potter didn't mention it during the actual show.

As far as rain, it was a stormy day, but the nighttime forecast was not bad at all. Crossroads isn't a bad setup, though it's kind of a strange part of town, a bit down from the actual power and light district.

Humble Pie????? Is this guy kidding??? "I Don't Need No Doctor" and "30 days in the Hole" never sounded like GPN...or vice-versa!
It is a funny comparison, though!

garyjohn-thanks for sharing your show experience, sounds like it was a great one and a somewhat intimate setting, a festival with only 400 people or so? I am a newer GPN fan myself and it is easy to get excited about this band. u pose some interesting questions and 4 sure your instinct that most hard working musicians are not necessarily living on any sort of regular or structured salary is spot on. as 4 live shows I'm pretty sure that in most cases bands are paid by promoters with money coming in from ticket sales, alcohol, food, parking...and in many cases promoters do lose $$, or bands get screwed, or both. in many other cases everyone makes a ton of cash. the band can be into small crowds just as much as large ones, sometimes maybe more...it just depends on the setting and vibe. a lot of times they are getting paid a set amount regardless of attendance. your other questions are funny. not sure about the tooth-but equally curious, GPN has been thru several tour busses and that trend is likely 2 continue, and yes, grace and matt are together-and it appears they may have been engaged recently

Thanks for the answers. Crossroads KC is a pretty established outdoor concert setting so maybe GPN received a set amount. Parking was free and there were no lines for beers. I guess it really was perfect for our group of people. We got to get right up by the stage for an amazing two hour performance. We should thank the heavens because it was almost like a personal show with the small Thursday night crowd. GPN did seem like they enjoyed the setting and the small crowd didn't bother them a bit it appeared. I think Grace Potter said on her tweet that "Benny knoked his front tooth out on the first song." I see there's a good mini review online on the group's performance in Minnesota last night. You are right. It's easy to get excited about that group. A lot of people at the concert were already looking forward to GPN/Avett Brothers in Sept. and GPN will be at some fair/festival in nearby Paola next month as well.

BTW, she did have what appeared to be an engagement ring on the finger at the show.

Exactly, Eric. Rippin is the word. It was pretty freaking awesome. Does Grace use any of the same lines in most shows? I thought it was funny and sexy when
she said it was the last song for sure and to sing and, 'who knows, maybe you'll get to see my underwear.' I thought that was freaking funny.
Also earlier she wanted the people to sing and yelled, 'Give it to me hard.' I laughed. Amazing stuff.

I can tell you, Grace does not use the same lines over and over...she enjoys talking to the audience ....she is very spontaneous and sometimes does not think before she speaks (no filter as her mother says)......usually those are the funniest things she says!!

Thanks Wally. I figured as much. I see one of the reviewers even printed her line about the underwear. It was great.

This show was the most fun I have had seeing the new band to date. I was right up front and didnt give a hoot what was going on around me. Just sucked in every note of every song and loved every minute of it. Every one of my friends, the newbies that had never seen the band and my friends that come to support me because they know how much I love the band.....EVERYBODY loved it. The weather was iffy which probably kept some people away but it turned out, that the weather held out and it was a beautiful night beginning with a rainbow and ending with ROCK N ROLL. Grace was tame but she was awesome. Word is Benny got a tooth knocked out on the first song. Still havent heard about that one yet.

in my opinion this is in the top 5-10 shows of the year so far, from what i have heard. there is a nasty medicine on this one (jam at the end), as well as the jam that i detailed below, and ill add furthermore everything after apologies is pretty much a one way ticket down epic boulevard. i also think scott picked up that black guitar right around the 4th of July up in the PNW. i saw him play it in aspen when i was front row July 5 (debut of the new guitar?). i immediately noticed its blistering tones were loud and crispy. he was having fun. u can hear scott all over the black guitar (Flatline) on the recordings of allgood and crossroads, and everything since then that i have to catch up on. nasty!

this KC show was killer-give it another spin!
