I am hoping for the annual island pilgrimage - ACK and MVY??? I could possibly manage Nectars MVY if it's sometime during 8/7 - 12!!! HOPING!!!

I'm hoping GPN fills in the open slot for Lilith Fair's Boston show on 7/30.
A friend I'm going with posted the suggestion on Lilith's FB last week and immediately got comments agreeing.
Suspect some fans aren't happy about the connection, but GPN Wowed a lot of people at the 5 shows they did who would never have known about them otherwise.

I hope we get another NE date. Especially because I'm trying to justify these long drives for a non headlining show.

Pollstar shows them in Boulder CO 8/11 but its not on the show list here......wonder if this is right??
Doesn't really seem right.....on east coast 7/26 thru 8/13.......would they do a quick trip to CO and then return???
They have done these things in the past so I guess anything is possible.
Would love to see them play with Levon in Newport on Aug 1st...........probably wont happen.

I think Pollstar might be right about the Boulder CO show. I just checked the Fox Theater website and they list a GPN show on 8/11
http://www.foxtheatre.com/Store/ChooseTicket.aspx?sid=15732
I'm hoping for a Ridgefield Playhouse show in early August :)

I think the AAA conference in Boulder is a 3-4 day showcase for radio, and they have been selling tickets for a couple of weeks. Good chance for exposure with industry flacks, but once again, GPN will play a shortened set in Colorado. :(
I am supposed to be out of town that day, so I will likely miss it anyway.

The time GPN drove down to see Wilco concert on the spur of the moment, I thought they might be going to talk to them about appearing at Solid Sound Festival. That would have been good, eh?

Yup . . key word is 'surprise' . . am I expecting it ? - of course not . . but I didn't expect to see GPN-one seated 6 rows behind me in Concord either. :D

Wally - I'm with you! I wish they would post any New England summer dates much earlier. Might be hard to find rooms at this point on the islands, never mind to clear my schedule and make arrangements for children and animals. I like to plan much further ahead than 30 days out! I hope they come, but I also hope I can still go if they do.

there was a rumor of the Chicken Box in early Aug, but nothing on their website as of now.
is it too early to start a roll call for Burlington?
5 weeks :)

Where did you hear this rumor? On the islands you have to give a non-refundable deposit. Want to go, but this is crazy - less than 30 days out and we don't know yet?

Jackie -
it was sent in a PM to me quite a while back - I was probably supposed to keep it to myself ;)
my "apologies" to whomever sent it to me for posting it without confirmation.
I think it was rumored to be a week or so before Burlington

Never Say Never
Just when we'd given up hope of an unprecedented 5th year in a row at the Chicken Box, we got word today.
GPN on Nantucket, Saturday and Sunday August 7th and 8th.
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

I would love to do Nantucket - but (will not add expletive just to be contrary) I can't afford it - the Vineyard is a little more doable - any word on Nectars MVY?

Wow! I can't believe they JUST posted that. I checked a couple places on line and its going to be difficult to get a reservation on a weekend! Uggghh! Minimum stay requirements and higher overnight rates than during the week. I've gone 2 years in a row and this makes it very difficult to go this year. Well, there is New Hampshire. But there's nothing like the islands trip! Anyone else going?

Martha's Vineyard is now posted - Friday August 6th - grrrrr - needed it to be the 7th . . .
Ah well for those who can go - here's the FB link
http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=138160009545903&ref=mf
or in the show schedule on the official website:
08/06/10 Grace Potter and the Nocturnals in Edgartown,MA Nectars Martha
i could maybe consider 8-6 & 8-7 but im not sure. that is right around the corner. ive never been to either Martha's Vinyard or Nantucket, so I guess that is some incentive. i probably wouldnt even waste my time trying to make hotel accomodations at either summer vaca destination for a peak season weekend so close to the date-i dont even want to know how much that would cost if i could even get rooms, and instead just drive a little after the show to some random holiday inn or whatever somewhere on the mainland "anytown mass"

Eric - If that were an option - to drive afer the show to an off island hotel - I'd up for doing that. Problem is - these are islands and unless you have a submersible vehicle - you must take the ferry or a plane to get off island. The Nocs play late, and ferries are not running by the time their set is done in the wee hours of an island morning . . . :(
So - unless you are a good swimmer, and not afraid of JAWS - I don't think you'll be able to get to "anytown mass" after the show . . .

This 2 night minimum crap makes one go into "creative travel" mode or "guerilla travel" mode......so I'm thinking about 6pm ferry from Falmouth to MV....dinner, etc....11pm NOC show....then just stay up all night and catch the first boat back......
unless One Away wants to put us up???(only kidding...)
Tekawitha
07-15-2010, 10:26 AM
we will be there then - we are all pumped - just in case you aren't aware- the ferry rides are tough...reservations made months ahead and if not, standby, etc. If you go across as a passenger, much easier but then from the landing to Edgartown might be a haul.

guerilla travel mode - that may just work - maybe I can talk Gary into doing an all nighter with you and Kathy (and Keri?) too! I haven't slept on the beach for a while . . . . it can be good for the soul. . . wonder if they'd let us have a bonfire on the beach? naaaa, just dreaming, I'm sure there's an ordinance for that somewhere.
funny - when I was in my early 20's a bunch of us would head to the vineyard regularly - usually for the 4th and we'd camp at the now defunct Cranberry Acres. What we would always do is close our local bar and then drive (yes I know what I'm typing- I was young is my only excuse) to Woods Hole and park in the standby ferry line to catch the first ferry across in the am - what you're proposing wally is the same kind of thing - in reverse!!!

well, thanks 4 the heads up. between this and the posts that followed, the plot has certainly thickened. no problem staying up all night or not having a place to go or any of that. allthough not sure what would be a bigger challenge doing it with a car or without. either way it seems like quite the mission given all the cirucumstances, although i am positive it would be worth it, i suppose its gonna be tough.

Plan B? Standby walk on and 24 hour rental car returned early . . .
for friday pm? and then what? take the ferry from MV to Nantucket the next am and do it all again? or r u just saying for the one show sat in nantucket? sunday night is not an option for me personally
if they would have done fri-sat at Nantucket and sun at MV the only issue would be $$. certainly would be jumping thru some hoops and winging it for 48 hours the way its unfolding here. although if it happens its def going in the direction of all kinds of fun.
with the Cross-Sound ferries from Long Island to Connecticut, and the late show time fri, i could easily get "there" (or very close, or whatever) with time to spare and back very easily and not miss any work. hmm still far from a reality. and driving up there and whatever else just for one show sat is a tough call

My only remote chance is to do MVY - but really, it's not very possible. Vacation week for Gary begins Friday AFTER work on 8/6 - to try to get to Woods Hole or Hyannis is pretty much out of the question, and Nantucket is too expensive for us to even consider.
It was all just a dream - back to reality - good news is Waterfront hotel and tickets are already booked and budgeted for. Gots to be happy with that!
Tekawitha - thrilled for you to be able to enjoy an island show - I know how much you will enjoy it - please share it with us when you return!! :)

From experience.....the fuzz on the islands frown on folks with nowhere to go. traffic is a nightmare accessing Woods Hole for the ferry. most people need the week on the island to recover from the effort of getting there on a summer Friday

I'm still thinking...have to run this one by my concert buddy Keri....her mother will think we are both nuts to even think about it!!!
Was thinking about leaving from Falmouth/New Bedford.....not as bad of a cluster f---k as Woods Hole.....or we have a fast ferry from N. Kingstown RI too........I read some of Van's prior year reviews of the island shows and some nights the after hours stuff went almost till dawn......so if we could find someplace to go to hang out, the all nighter idea maybe do-able and not attract the attention of local law.
And then again I maybe dreaming...like Jan........
wally i agree that we are all dreaming, but just 4 clarification r u dreaming about fri or sat

Drat ... had I known sooner I would have budgeted my concert and travel dollars accordingly and had myself a nice old time on the islands that weekend. Unfortunately it was not meant to be. Hopefully next year. Will keep my fingers crossed for another Infinity Hall show.

Yes, I made it to both Infinity Hall shows, as did a good number of the folks here. Although I hadn't met any of them yet at the time, the faces in the front row at the New England shows were starting to look very familiar by then. :)
Hope you can make it to the next Infinity show, Eric. (I'm making the leap that there will be one). Beautiful small venue with great sound ... I think GPN could easily sell out 2 nights there.

Arghhhhh - B&L shows on the schedule for both of the Box shows in ACK. Now if only I can to figure out how to rob peter to pay paul . . . . I'd be there. I really was hoping the date for MVY would be after ACK to make this work for me.
Trish - I'm right there with you in touting the praises of Infinity Hall - I couldn't manage the January one due to winter work schedules - but the August show was really stellar too, and Infinity is a real gem of a venue. I'd love to try to see them there again - hope they don't mind doing another sellout show in this sweet little gem, because like the first two did, the thrid would sell out even quicker.
THANK U! 4 the invitation Trish. I am actually going to take u right up on that. and they JUST announced 10-29-10 in DC so im hoping for a nyc show as well and maybe even one on Halloween.
and MVY is still a major long shot at best 4 me, but WALLY-let me tell u, i have never been to the island and u seem like a seasoned veteran...but i just spoke with Heather (w/ the lovely British accent) from here:
https://campmv.com/
and she sure made it seem like your dreams can turn into reality real quik. there are several tent sites available for that weekend (the expensive cabins r sold out) and they rent bicycles at the campground. she said u can get anywhere on a bike and edgartown is 8 miles from there, and the ferry is 1.5 miles. she said no car needed on the island whatsoever, so if walking on the mainland ferry is possible it seems to me like it can be done, if u r up 4 tenting out.
there is a 2 night minimum at $50 per night but it accomodates 4 adults or a familly of 4. sounds like the campground has all kinds of accomodations. she said there are at least 3-5 tent sites left. if i were doing this, which im 99.99% not, id prob just stay/camp at MV all weekend and catch the one show friday pm. i hope u can somehow make it.

Wally - Let me know if you do this. I may join you. If you have 3, I'll be your fourth, pay $50 and stay on your site Friday night. It depends because I really want to go to Nantucket too, and I do have a friend there, but I'm not sure I can stay with her. I wonder of OneAwayMan would let us camp in his backyard? Last year I got a single room for $125/night with no air conditioning, but this year its $165/night. Not sure I can swing all this cash and make this happen last minute, but I'm up for trying.

Note to OneAway Man - we'd be willing to pay (even $100/night would be a bargain for me). Need access to a bathroom and shower. Maybe you've got some friends who need extra cash and can put up with a few campers on their lawn for 2 nights?

Keri and I are working on this.......not renting anything for 2 days. This will be strictly a chew-listen-chew-and screw trip for sure!!
She wants to bring our own bikes which is fine with me. She wants to do the all nighter. Knowing her, we'll have fun somewhere and not get in trouble!!
Leaving from New Bedford or RI is $70 each RT but Falmouth is only 15 plus 6 bucks for the bikes......only bitch there is getting over the Borne Bridge on a Friday afternoon.......
Plans are fluid for sure!!

That's funny. Keri is a girl after my own heart! I'm bringing my bike - always do. Got the extra side holder and a rack on the back to bungy things in. I wouldn't mind camping at that price. I got to do what I can to save money - got a kid starting college this Fall. You know what that's like. I might skip MV though and just do Nantucket if I can find a hotel room cheap, have people to camp out with there, and I have asked a friend on the island if she has any options for me. I need this trip more than ever! Did all 3 nights last year and loved the interisland ferry ride with the band!

Ok, change of plans. Fighting time, cape bridge traffic and whatnot on a friday (I already didi this to see Susan T on July 2nd) is no fun....sooooooooooooo.........Keri's idea is to take our time getting to Nantucket on SAT....also Blues and Lasers are scheduled for NANT........and there is a 6:30am ferry back on Sunday.
So if we leave for the Cape in the AM on Sat, shouldnt hit much traffic.......seems like a better idea....still fluid!!!!

I don't think affordable and Nantucket in the summer are compatible concepts. I stayed at the Beachside in late June last summer for $99 during that cold rainy spell we had, but that was an unusual deal due to the weather creating an extended off-season. This time of year, I think you are looking at a minimum of $250 or probably even much more to stay anywhere out there. It's worth trying though ... maybe check one of the tourism web sites and call around to the smaller inns.
JackieinCT

There is also sometimes a 2 night minimum. That weekend is also the Nantucket Antique Show and a lot of people come just for that. Its going to be a hard time finding a hotel for this weekend even at $225 a night.
