That will be an awesome pre-christmas treat for some lucky folks downeast!! Remember seeing that the theater was being restored when i was there last in April. I checked in on the website and saw the Higher Ground connection - that bodes well for more frequent GPN shows now doesn't it!! The schedule of performances so far looks pretty interesting too.
wish I could go . . . :(

the State Theatre is at 609 Congress St. which is across the street and a half block around the corner from the Eastland Park hotel . . and a block up and half a block over from the Holiday Inn By The Bay.
So now Portland has a club ( Port City Music Hall ) and two concert venues * in easy walking distance of each other . . . I need to move south :D
* State Theatre has a seating capacity of 1450 including the balcony
Merrill Auditorium seats 1900 . . it's home to the Portland Symphony, the sound there is incredible

Yes sir. I've loved GPN since I left Massachusetts. My buddy that went to UNH got me into right after Original Soul came out. I've just been a lurker, and decided to come public!
No problem on meeting toofarnorth. I like meeting fellow tapers and GPN fans. We have very few in Florida.
With my rig: Its simple, yet sofisicated. Check the archive and type in fnovoa. I have my tapes on there and bt.etree.org as well.

I'm not a taper, but I am going to be there. Really excited, this will be my first show, As luck would have it I was going to be in Portland this weekend anyways - this is a great bonus!
I'm not a taper but a serious amateur photographer. Since I am new here I am curious about GPN's photo policy - do they allow "professional" cameras, or does one need to somehow get a photo pass to bring one into a show? Would really like to be able to bring my "good" camera that night.

Hi samjp4, welcome to the board !
You can ask GPN's resident management person, Nate, about the photography guidlines.
To make sure he sees your question it's best to go to the Q&A section here (http://www.gracepotter.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/3-Q-A) and use the Post New Thread button.
Hope you get to bring your "good" camera.

Any other tapers going?
It costs $45 to ship my stand from here in Florida to Maine. So i'll be taping on the floor with mics and/or on the balcony with my T Mount. If anyone here knows a taper, or a taper that is going to show please let them know that a fellow taper would love to clip on to his/her stand to tape the show. I hope I'm not the only taper.
See you guys there!

FINALLY - it's almost here. I am so jacked for this, my 6th show of 2010 (if you count Bull Moose). If I get any of "Watching You," "Stop The Bus," or "Over Again," I will not ask Santa for anything else ... except a Vermoncé T-Shirt!

It's an awesome venue. No seats down front or in the right side of the room. 3 bars all with great views. $5.00 big beers. Cool staff. I love the place. I think it was sold out the last time I went a few weeks back and there was still plenty of room. One of if not the best venue of it's size in NE.

I'll get right to the point. This was hands down the best GPN show I've ever seen. I thought they were as good as it gets at the Waterfront this summer, but I really think this one was even better. Just a few highlights ...
The 2:22 they left out in Northampton was brought out in Portland and it was a hard rocking 2:22 with attitude. The roses were back on stage, but this time they were real ones ... a very appropriate touch for the grand finale of the fall tour and celebration of their Beatles hammering week. During 2:22, Grace, wearing a gorgeous black sheer dress cut waaaaaaay up the side, did this slow sexy walk to the front of the stage with hands full of rose petals and released them out into the audience. The crowd went nuts. Definitely my favorite version I've heard of this song, but also the hottest peformance of it.
Grace, Scott and Benny came out for an acoustic set that started out with ... my jaw almost dropped to the floor ... You and Tequila duet with Scott. I've heard Scott with B&L and on background vocals with GPN and knew he could sing, but on this particular song his voice was just beautiful. Chesney better watch out, because the Nocturnals can pull this one off without him! I remember thinking that they sounded just as natural in the country genre as they do with rock and Scott sang it so well, he can totally hold his own with Grace ... I'd love to see them do more of this. The rest of the acoustic set included Ain't No Time (w/audience paticipation) and then (almost as unexpected as You and Tequila) Big White Gate. By then, my jaw had landed on the floor.
Tiny Light had that new extended extended ending (double extended intended) with the new lyrics they'd brought out for Northampton. Can't wait to listen to the recording since I couldn't make them all out, but it was very cool ... reminds me a lot of Watching You (I was telling Heath, I'd love to see them do a blended version of those two songs in Burlington ... might take a 1/2 hour, but it would be mind blowing!). Scott's solo on Tiny light was incredible. I seriously don't know how he had the stamina to play that intensely for that long.
The whole band was on fire the entire show, like take Nocturnals and turn up the heat times 100. No exaggeration. Cat was most certainly missed and I can't wait to see her back with the Nocs in Burlington. But I also love John's energy on bass and he's doing an amazing job filling in (you really forget he's a "temp", especially after seeing him play with these same band mates during the B&L set). He's fun to watch and the young girls in the crowd definitely pay a lot of attention to him!
I noticed this weekend that Grace, who typically doesn't physically interact with the crowd, came to the edge of the stage both nights touching hands with fans, and in Portland she actually lay on the floor with her head about 6 inches from the edge of the stage while singing Medicine. On any given night, she's the most amazing performer I've ever seen, but this weekend it really seemed like she was feeding off the energy and love from the crowd more than ever ... and it was making her even better. Last night in the State Theater I truly felt like I was watching the birth of a legend. Or, perhaps more accurately, the public arrival of one who is destined to be legendary ... and of a band that no doubt will be. I've had moments when I've doubted the ability of the general public to get this band and appreciate their talent and their authenticity, since so much of what's mainstream these days has anything but those qualities. But last night it was clear that folks are not only getting it with GPN, they can't get enough of it! And if I actually got a little teary eyed with joy and awe at times during this show, don't think I'd fess up to it ... well, maybe just a little. ;)
wow, great review Trish. im glad u made it up there! i think Grace has got some of the fans as passionate as she is right now...myself included of course. and ill add here for Northampton the coolest part of the show for me was that when i jumped in TRISHs (thx again!) front row spot i got to see that Grace was still wearing the ring from the DIVAs show, clear to all at this point a complete game changer gig on all levels-and i thought, i wonder if she will ever take it off? cant put my finger on exacly why, but it just meant the world to me to see her wearing that ring. it was symbolic of so many things right at that moment.
gonna take a guess and say the "You and Tequila" with Scott was a treat just for the Portland audience. next one i bet is with Chesney again, maybe even at one of his shows.
wow what a run, and what a way to end it. i guess summer tour is finally over.
t minus burlington!

Great Review Trish !! I can't agree with you more on your points of energy and watching the band just catapault their career to a whole new level over the last week . To see their popularity blow up from VH1 Divas show , to the set at Portland . My girlfriend and I drove up the 2 hrs from Boston to see the show and spend the night . It couldn't have been any better . The crowd was amazing , the band was amazing and the venue just felt so raw and spot on for GPN . We were lucky enough to meet all of them after the show at the hotel . They were all very nice and took the time to say hello and take pics and sign things for everyone out there .

Wow...what an encore. I can only imagine how awesome it was to have been there, and how insane the energy must have been at those moments. Love it!
So so glad that we have our tixs for their next trip thru DC. I have a feeling that show will be selling out quickly, and there was no way we were gonna miss it again. From here on out, I will always be buying GPN asap, because there is no more time for snoozin' for this band. They are on fire, I am so excited for them, and what is to come for us fans!!

Trish I just loved reading your thoughts of the show. It does mean alot to those of us who can't get to every single show these musical road warriors put on to hear about those extra special nights through show reviews like yours, and see the photos that capture those moments in time as well. Brings us there for just a bit. Thanks to everyone on this thread and all the show threads for sharing your passion with us at home.
Counting the days til I can get in my last Noc's show for 2010 - but in the meantime, thanks again for sharing stories, thoughts and photos from the road!

I was digging that for sure. I knew it had morphed into something else, but I had no idea of what. I thought sure as hell she was gonna let out a blood curdling SUGARRRRRRRR.... but I was wrong. I'm tracking my tape now, and the all knowing oracle at Google says it's a song called "Give Me a Reason To Love You" by "Portishead", whoever that is. Never heard of the song, or the band.

I'm pretty sure that song is called "Glory Box," from Portishead's 1994 album, "Dummy." It includes the lyrics, "Give Me a Reason To Love You."

I've been a fan of Portishead for a long time, and when I heard Tiny Light on Saturday, I thought this is what my ear caught, but thought it might have just been me and my general lack of sleep. Glad to know I'm not losing it. I like it.

feel free to call me a lunatic ...
but, i really thought i heard a hint of Tom Petty's "Listen To Her Heart" in the intro of "Ah, Mary" at this show. Similar chord progressions and especially the way Benny ings out the note while Scott takes the melody.
Anyone, anyone? *crickets*
