Bonnaroo 2006.

My very first 'Roo (very first music fest ever, actually) and I was flying solo. Wandering aimlessly, in absolute awe of everything, and with no destination in mind, I made my way into and through Centeroo trying to soak up as much possible. I was passing the very small Sonic Stage and my world stopped. I had never heard a [live] voice sound so beautiful and passionate. Once I got in the venue, the sound was even better and the instrumental talent was unbelievable. I only caught one or two songs, but in those few minutes the way I felt about music changed forever.

I saw them on a music TV station the fuse a show called "Beautifull Noise", I was blown away!! I recorded it on my DVR when they replayed it a week later. It's still on there, but sadly next week I switch from Cablevision to FIOS and have to return my DVR. It will Be lost forever ! I don't think I could ever repace it ,they were so young,Grace was more hippyish (no sparkly dresses) The interviews really showed off her personallity. I'll have to watch one more time for old time's sake this weekend !! :(

"Live music archives roulette" I blindly clicked on GPN 1-18-10-from the page that loads the ENTIRE archive for ALL bands- when I was in the market for new music I never heard before. I knew the girl could sing within secinds but it was "mastermind" as soon as she said "one part sugar 2 parts feelin" I was in 4 lyphe

From kcortez online. Internet (and people like kc who know how to make use of it) is the best thing that’s happened for music lovers.

Jersey Guy: You could play it and record from screen with camera or cell phone. Not as good quality, but you’d have it. Your mind would fill in some of the roughness, too.

Right about when NBTW came out, I was walking to my car with Van in Hampton Beach, NH after a Susan Tedeschi show......He slipped me a copy and said "Give this a listen...I think you're gonna like it!!"
And that my friends is the understatement of the century!!

I heard Ah Mary on the radio as I was pulling into my driveway. I ran inside to my computer and pulled up the radio station to see what song it was. That radio station, known for playing cool, not mainstream acts, soon went out of business. :(

A few months later (Fall 2008) I saw GPN headline at the Ogden just because of Ah Mary, which I had not heard since. I had no idea what Grace and the band even looked like. That show, including an incredible cover of Paint it Black, got me hooked.

first heard NBTW on Sirius end 2006/early 2007.
discovered the Yuku fan forum and met some Posse folks down front of the B3 before the show -
McDowell Mountain Music fest in Scottsdale, Az, end of april 2007, met Owllover and Soywolf.
"that's where it ALL began" (sung in my best A-Bros voice).
it's been a lovely cruise, sure hoping for a left-coast swing early 2011 - Burlington in August seems so long ago.
love the GPN/Mule combo - when Grace sings with Warren - ooh la la!!!

Searching you tube under Boston Music Awards and their performance of NBTW was shown . My mind was blown , hooked from her first line of vocals & tamberine. And then when the band kicked in , that was it ...I went out and bought their catalog and wondering how this band eluded me for years. I knew their name but had no idea of their sound .

Just a few months ago, I heard Neil Young's Cortez the Killer on the airwaves. Decided to Youtube it for the fun of it and saw the Joe Sattriani (sp?) version. "Man, that sounds cool but who is this chick singing and playing the organ. Grace Potter, ain't never heard of her". Did a search and found this website. Clicked on some videos and I was just awestruck by the whole band and the music.

Saw them the other week in Charlotte. My concert standards have just been raised!

They blew my hair back in 2005 in Beantown. I thought that Frenchie on guitar was cute. He was. He is. They are all precious.

Like most of the new artists I've discovered in the past few years, I stumbled over GPN via the internet.

A blogger whose site I visited almost daily had posted several times about Grace and the band. I picked up This Is Somewhere a couple of weeks after it came out in 2007 because of that recommendation . . it stayed in my car's CD player for the remaining 5 hrs of my road trip.

KCortez started his TIS blog (http://www.thisissomewhere.com/) in January '08. GPN played at Workplay in Birmingham that month and KC put up a video from the show of Grace covering Pain In My Heart. It was the final nudge needed to make me decide to take the "you have to see them live" advice. I went to GPN's show at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH a few weeks later and have been hooked ever since.

From the website 'Thrasher's Wheat' the ultimate
fan site for Neil Young. Grace was singing the above
mentioned Cortez the Killer! Right away I called for
my wife to listen to this young singer with incredible
pipes. She was instantly blown away.
Then we watched the Boston music awards of NBTW.
In my mind, still the greatest song in their catalogue!
Just unbelievable, she's so good & the band are no
slouches themselves. I love watching Matt Burr on the
drums & the sheer joy he has playing.

I've enjoyed watching the evolution of the band,
Nothing wrong with Grace sexing it up because she
still got the pipes!!!

GPN was getting a lot of press on the Warehouse (Dave Matthews Band boards), and I few of the people from that site raved about the band. So, I checked them out, and the rest is history.

Late one New Year's Eve, 2006, I wanted to see the Cortez video because we are long time Neil Yong fans. Like many others we were struck by the keyboard player/singer. Rewound the dvr, googled Grace Potter then went out and bought all the cd's we could find. Ten months later gpn is opening for Gov't Mule in our home town, Johnson City, NY, October 11, our anniversary. We were up front, within three songs all the fans waiting to see Gov't Mule were standing, listening to this band blow the roof off. When Warren Haynes brought her back up to sing Al Green's Take Me to the River, the crowd roared their approval. The next time we saw them in the Allen Room. We give copies of that concert to anyone who hasn't heard of gpn to begin their transformation. We have seen them many, many times and were fortunate enough to have our photos taken with Grace before the most recent New Lebanon show. So far this year we have seen gpn three times and have tickets for three shows in december.

One of my good friends had been living in VT since she began college. We had been friends since we met in middle school here in MD She and I shared music throughout our friendship. She had discovered GPN in their very early days playing around Burlington. On trips home she would tell me about them but I had not heard them for myself. After 7 years of living in VT during the summer of 2007 she moved back to MD. I was happy to have her nearby again, but she was unsure about the move and very homesick for VT. Shortly after she moved back GPN was opening up for Govt. Mule at the 9:30 club. Of course she was all over this show and asked me to go with her. I was hesitant but agreed to go along. Not so much because I trusted her music recommendations for me, as that I wanted her to have a little taste of VT. to ease the transition. I never expected to have been changed the way I was that night. Changed on so many levels, affecting so many aspects of my life. Would get into details but its a bit of a ride on the cheese bus, I will spare anyone who has read this much all that. Just saying, the music, the energy, Grace's fierceness, and the reawakeing that happened afterwards, it was all what had me hooked on this band from that first opening set.

I saw a small article in the latest Guitar World magazine and hit the web to find out more. I hit YouTube and saw that she did a song with Joe Satriani, which intrigued me, so that was the first one I watched. As mentioned a few times in the thread so far, that Cortez The Killer video just blew me away. I've watched it countless times since. That was my first time to hear Grace and I was absolutely captured. I've been devouring all the GPN that I can find lately and have purchased everything that iTunes has to offer for the band and am very much enjoying it all so far.

I can't help but feel that I've somehow fallen off the earth and somehow totally missed the boat with GPN. How have they been around this long, been this good, and I'm just now discovering the music. I so envy those of you who have been a fan for so long. But I'm here now and I have no doubt I'll be singing the praises of GPN for a long time to come.

Now I must keep my eye out for their next performance here in town. Hopefully it won't be too long before they are in St. Louis again.

Got to hand it to VH 1, they will highlight talented bands and that's where I found GPN. Now I'm here and have watched everything I can and will buy their music. I really love the sound, the energy and spirit.

Thank u for sharing this experience! I think u speak for many of us-myself included. For me the good witch's spell had been brewing for quite some time, i left a lot out of my below post. I actually saw Grace Potter live at a Jammys show long before i truly dicovered her own music, and there is a lot there (betchya my bus is cheesier than yours!) when i heard that first show on the archives i was blown away but when i went to my first live GPN show i was literally knocked over. and it didnt stop there. in fact it hasnt stopped or even slowed down to this day. That Grace Potter, she is just full of suprises let me tell ya. and Cat doesnt exactly suk either

Yo Eric...this is one member of another group of Posse people I hope you meet up with....The Grooving Guavas!! They sometimes get together in either Burlington or the DC area or places in between.....Great GPN fans and very nice people also!!

Too bad we dont have the picture gallery from the old site....many pics of the Guavas and their wild signs!!

eric

so its like that, huh? grooving guavas and their wild signs? sounds pretty crazy.

maybe i will meet this posse u speak of in Burlington. I hope to go on 12-28 & 12-29, all tentative on if my sister decides to cooperate and not give birth on one of those days (6 hours away).

and even if she does...well i guess ill just have to cross that bridge when i get to it (the George Washington Bridge, that is-then just turn around and go straight back to northern VT ;-)

Hi there folks. New kid in town. Been on the site here several times and finally joined the forum. I am a musician/ guitar player and I love great music of all types. My name is Dave. Nice place the band has here. :)
I found Grace when I went to a Black Crowes show two years ago and the Nocturnals opened. I was immediately taken by her looks and presence when the band took the stage and when Grace began to sing I was lost in the ether.....I was so blown away by the depth of her songs and her musicianship! She seems to have wisdom beyond her years and is spiritual so, well in short I fell hard!! I bought NBTW and I listen to Grace when I run and exercise. Bought every album I can find and saw the band in October for the second time and they were the headliners. I was right below Grace up front and there was a point in the show where Grace put her leg up on her B-3 and leaned back to hit this insanely powerful note and I said out loud, "damn you're killing me!" A woman behind me heard me over the band and said "yeah, she's beautiful isn't she?" That doesn't do her justice. Met Ben after the show briefly but didn't get to see Grace:(. My 11 and 5 year olds hear all music I consider of great quality and they love Grace. The 11 year old was bummed because she was too young to go. In the age of Hip Hop that is saying something eh?

Yes, our gain though. Not just because it is great to have her close, but also because she brought back this amazing band to me. Downside is now I have no one to visit and crash with in Burlington. She does miss it there...that is why I had to go to that show with her, I thought it would better my chances of her staying here because in the beginning I am pretty sure she was close to moving back to VT.

Wally, thanks for the kind words.

eric, I suppose you could say that the guava's formed the next summer when we went to All Good. For that show we painted a sign that read, "If I was a Guava I would Groove". When GPN began to play Paris, we held the sign high in hopes that they would see it. They did, and sure enough Grace sang the words off the poster during the second verse, I believe it was in place of the old lyric, if I was a razor I'd shave you smooth. It kicked ass...our friends we were with thought we were rock stars. The memory lives on at archives, check it out, it was 2008.

First saw the band when touring with No Miss Allstars (late 2005?). Knew a bandmember from way back when, and went to say hi and show support far from home. Jr. Roadie for a night, I guess, meeting everyone else and helping lug gear back to the bus in the rain after the set.

Occasionally kept tabs via YouTube following this exposure, and it was Birmingham Steve's capture of Pain in My Heart cited here, along with Stop the Bus from Red Rocks (to name the hottest two clips) that really caught my attention and convinced me that Grace and the band were capable of passing that threshold of good to great... and beyond. Having witnessed 10+ Springsteen shows, I'll throw that comparison out there since both artists succeed by tapping into something greater than themselves in a live setting. Also having the ability with each different song to bring to life a unique voice - conveying like a skilled actor the emotions behind a song character's particular point of view - that's a rare and distinguishing quality that keeps me coming back for more. Like maybe NYE. See you there?

Like most of the new artists I've discovered in the past few years, I stumbled over GPN via the internet.

So, I'm an older guy, and I'm reading my friends' posts on FaceBook, you know, minding my own business. One of my "friends" posts a Vid of GPN with the Wilson sisters doing "Crazy On You". So, I thought that was a pretty good cover version, and then I saw a link to "Paint It Black" and "White Rabbit". I was starting to get intrigued... here was this younger woman with this great voice paying homage to the "classics". So, I kept looking around, and found Grace's performance with Joe Satriani doing "Cortez the Killer"... I was hooked! I started watching every video I could find of The Nocturnals. I couldn't believe that I had never heard of GPN before... a really great blues/soul vocalist / multi-instrumentalist being backed by an incredibly tight and equally talented band! I will be buying up everything I can find, and cursing my misfortune that I missed their last performance in Cleveland.

Ten years ago I thought it was Kenny Wayne Sheppard or Johnny Lang that was going to save "true rock and roll". That didn't work out so well, but now I know that it is Grace Potter & The Nocturnals that will define the future of music. Keep Rocking, GPN!

My parents lived in VT, and shared the same group of friends with Grace's family. They ended up becoming good friends, and since I pretty much grew up in VT with my parents and their friends, you could say I discovered GPN a while ago! But its been so cool listening to "Gracie's" music come out and change over the years, my parents are so proud!!! GPN is an amazing, young, talented band, with a wide range of abilities! I loved hearing my mom tell me tonight about spending the 4th of July with the Potters and how "little Gracie used to have coke bottle glasses and now shes a star!!!" :-)

I'm a long time fan of Grace. I discovered her on Red Shoe Rebel back when she was a teenager (I loooove the pic of Grace in her pink tutu and glasses) It's been a joy to watch her and later her band grow. The Nocturnals are a fabulous! This summer I introduced my 20 yearold niece, 22 yearold nephew, 73 yearold mother to GPN at the Lake Champlain Maritime festival. (listening to Nothing but the Water with the Lake as a backdrop is truly a magical experience) Last night I took my 30(+) nieces and sister-in-law to the Northampton show which was awesome, and I'm looking forward to our annual family outing at the December Higher Ground shows.

I have never heard of GPN up until 8 months ago.
I was watching and searching for UTube clips on Joe Satriani, who is my all time favourite electric guitarist, and found one he did with Grace four years ago with a few other top muso's quite by accident.
It was a version of Neil Young's 'Cortez the Killer', and what a fine version it was.
Grace's performance was spectacular, and further investigation soon had me watching and listening to GPN UTube clips in no time.
If I wasnt searching for Satriani clips back then, I suggest that I may have never heard of this fine band.
Looking in the record stores here in Northern Australia, you wont find any GPN CD's unfortunately.
A tour and some good promo over this part of the world wouldn't go astray.
This band is world class, and more should be done to get this band out.

my big brother handed me the Nothing But The Water CD as my "departure gift" when I left the US to go live in England for a brief period of time, he said, "sounds like something you'd be in to". I spent many rides on the Tube and many a walks around London listening to the CD and thinking "I gotta get home to see this band live!". The rest is history. Thanks, Patrick :) Best brother ever.

I found them in 2008. I was at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA for a DMB show. This girl from New York saw me drinking Jack Daniels in the parking lot and asked if she could have some. We had a few drinks together and the whole time she raved about GPN. She convinced me to go in early with her so I could check them out. I was blown away!

I first started to pay attention to GPN last spring when she was brought up on the Joe Bonamassa forum. Lots of positive stuff from people there led me to start looking for her stuff on youtube and buying CD's. I think hearing "White Rabbit" sealed the deal for me. I have always loved that song and rarely if ever is it done so well. Didn't take long to get hooked. Have been waiting for a chance to see them live, finally did last Saturday. Already looking forward to getting to another show. Another band that gives me hope that real music is still alive.

I had the glorious opportunity to attend Goddard College between 2000-2002. That being said I've been a fan of Mr. Scott Tournet since 2000. My love of GPN came from him. Scott went there, so did Steve in Blues and Lasers. Luckly I had worked for a band in the past and began going to band practice with those two daily. So I have too say my GPN love first came through Scott and Steve really. Those two guys are extra ordinary and extremely great people, the guys in GPN too are quality folks.

Seeing them live really is the key. They really are a live band first. That being said, GPN comes correct live. They just release serious energy. I love them, but to know them is to know that they are tour band that brings it strong on a nightly basis.

While I would like to attribute my GPN addiction to my college days spent in beloved Vermont, it wouldn't be honest.

It was only this past June that I really "discovered" GPN. More honestly, after hassling a friend of mine who kept shirking commitments for Grace (concerts, meet & greets, etc.), he finally put the newest album in my hands in an attempt to make me understand. (Thank you, J.:D) Shortly into Paris, I was grinning and groovin' (by myself, in my car, of course :)) I loved every beat of that new album and it didn't leave my cd player for weeks...

When I found myself listening to the album for the umpteen-millionth time on one of my long car rides, I made a late night trip into Bullmoose music to pick up This is Somewhere. I was not sure of what to expect because I had heard the band's style had evolved; I was entirely pleased to find that I could, indeed, like everything about this album too!

I wanted NBTW also (it seemed I just couldn't get enough) but opted to put the money into a ticket to the Waterfront Festival show in August--which might have been one of the best decisions I've made. Because of GPN, I am a total believer in "concert high." There is no question that this was "the point of no return." (The meet & greet at LCC might have helped too.) I left knowing I wouldn't be satisfied with that one show and immediately started wondering when the next would be. (Oh, and I might have bought NBTW the very next weekend, too.)

And, I might also say that after seeing GPN play the State Theater in Portland earlier this month, I am still not satiated... Bring it on GPN, I can't get enough! :)

Great thread. I liked Eric's reply - "Live music archives roulette". I download a lot of live music, across so many genres, and hardly ever listen to FM radio. Probably in 2007/2008, I began seeing a lot of GPN shows at Archive.org, so I grabbed a couple out of curiosity. And I really enjoyed them. Grabbed the NBTW & TIS albums back then (and the new one this past summer), but I never had a chance to see them until this past weekend, when I saw the NYE show at Higher Ground. Fantastic show, can't wait to see them again here in Boston on 3/25/11.

By the way, This Is Somewhere is definitely my favorite of the 3 GPN records. So many great songs on that record, and each week my favorite changes. This week, it's probably Big White Gate.

This is my 1st post here on this this forum.
I discovered Grace Potter & The Nocturnals word-of-mouth via another recording artist, that being Karen Fairchild of the country foursome Little
Big Town. She had mentioned GP&N in a fanclub chat session a few months ago. I investigated more on my own and was immediately ((blown away))) with all the YouTube videos. I started 'Blipping' GP&N offerings via http://blip.fm/trainwreckradio
I anxiously await my 1st show, that being The Varsity Theater (http://www.varsitytheater.org) in Minneapolis Jan 16th.
I have joined the formal GP&N 'Street Team' (http://www.fanmanager.net/teams/gracepotter) as I have a tendency to go
overboard when discovering someone new. I have been promoting Austin, TX guitar phenom Monte Montgomery (http://www.montemontgomery.net) in the same manner for years. As a matter of fact, I bought the NEW GP&N 'self titled' CD while killing some time in Davenport, IA while waiting to see the aforementioned Monte Montgomery perform at the now sold out Redstone Room. GP&N perform there on 01/17, the nite after the upcoming Minneapolis show. A couple weeks later I bpought 'This Is Somewhere' & 'Nothing But The Water' CD/DVD combo discs.

For the life of me I do not understand how this band has escaped my radar-screen for so long. I have read much about their history, etc the last month or so. I am thoroughly ~~jazzed~~ and ready to have my face rocked-off on the 16th. Expect to see some foto's posted in the near future.

I work in commercial radio , on-air, at the #1 country station in this market. (a gig is a gig, ya kno?) :-)
I have worked in News/Info, Classic Rock, Hot AC, & Country formats in various markets
My personal musical preferences go wayyyyyyy beyond country music.
Chances are I'm the only FORMER grocery store manager you will ever meet that has had Ted Nugent for the afternoon at my store.
(long story, & not the venue, as I digress)

Again, I'm really looking forward to the 16th. I'll report back, often I hope!

Welcome Steve aka tranwreckradio! You'll find a bunch of people here who share that tendency to go overboard. Just wait til you actualy experience them LIVE. I have a funny feeling that tendency will go even more into overdrive.

I'm hoping about 3/4's of the country will soon share your sentiment: "for the life of me I do not understand how this band has escaped my radar -screen for so long . . . I am thoroughly jazzed"

I know I'm one of the growing number that has been scratching their head wondering why they aren't a household name yet!! So welcome and please do come on back and report in and share your stories and photos!

trainwreckradio / Steve . . I know I've seen yours somewhere . . are you a Blip DJ maybe ?

Yes, I am addicted to that BLIP realm, and just recently have started 'blipping' boat-loads of GP&N over there. http://blip.fm/trainwreckradio
Expect that NOT to change since I have joined the GP&N Street Team (http://www.fanmanager.net/teams/gracepotter)

I'm 'giddy' w/ anticipation for that 1st show!

Several months ago my hubby and I were crusin' down the road listing to the Spectrum. We are big channel switchers and love all kinds of music. Ah Mary was on and we were both really into the song - but so much that we didn't say anything to each other. After the song, we both kinda looked at each other like we both had the same experience "This music rocks".

From there we started downloading other songs and videos, etc and really got a sense of the band and all the members. We love the music!!!

Tonight we are going to see them live for the first time! Something about them makes us feel like we've always liked them. That's how I know when I'm really into a band and their music.

TrainWreckRadio -
we probably were at many of the same shows while you were here - altho Nitas is long gone :(
GPN has played 3x at the McDowell MT Music Fest (festy started in 2004, GPN has played 2007, 2008 2010). also
in Flagstaff opening for Mule in Nov 2007, Club Congress at Hotel Congress in Tucson Nov 2008,
and also a show I missed Dec 2009 at the Marquee tht in Tempe. we get another show on Feb 2, Martini Ranch in Scottsdale,
should be fun to watch the locals freak out a bit with some real rock n roll jammed into their faces!
from 1999 -2003 you would have found us at the Sail Inn, Bostons,Hollywood Alley or any of the dive bars with live music.
sometimes a musical black hole - other times more shows than you can go to, hit or miss.
welcome to GPN !!

WOW........Nita's gone? 1st they were located out near the 202-a small, 'dive' kinda place.
Then they moved to a new location south of Baseline. Saw the reformed Yardbirds there right
before we left the valley.
I did notice that the Tempe Music Fest is no longer in action. I had a part in getting an act booked
at the innaugeral event back in '02. (Monte Montgomery (http://www.montemontgomery.net)) Hope to come back for a visit sometime.
Who knows......maybe a 'snowbird-concert-excursion' to catch a GP&N on cold Jan day! :-)

I first heard of Grace through her fantastic guest spots with Gov't Mule.
They seemed to pick great songs to do with her always & she seemed to sit in whenever GPN opened for Mule (which seemed to be much of 2007)
I saw her open for Gov't Mule (& sit-in) in Portland, OR Fall 2007.

I heard them on VH1. Wow, I thought. These guys are awesome. They sound exactly like Heart in 1978 - the guitars, drums, everything. Really takes me back. Everything old is new again - except when it's still old. I'll bet they'll could be gigging like crazy as a Heart cover band. Just dying to hear them do "Magic Man", maybe a little "Dog and Butterfly".

First post. Very nice community you have here!

GPN came to me in a youTube link from a friend. It was the "Low Road" where they are walking down the path. Three verses in and my serotonin and dopamine receptors are being flooded with joy. Like finding a long lost friend that you've never met before...

So it was 2006 ... Was living in DC with my oldest friend. Months earlier he and I had returned from dinner to find his wife, my favorite person, Daphne dead of a heart attack ... Tried unsuccessfully to revive her. So I'm living with him, without a car a friend from Baltimore I know through my relation with Little Feat. My favorite band forever, and happily now my dear friends. They wrote the "Opus" that is my life. My friend Steve says "here's your chance! Know you've been anxious to see Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (had heard about them for years, being a Vt. music freak) ... They are playing a free show in Baltimore!!!" Explaining how my car was out of commission, my buddy immediately offered to give me a ride! Living in baltimore ... This meant he would drive 2 hrs each way to go to a show down the street!?!

So I'm already blown away by the generosity so was in a receptive mood! Here they come. Are you kidding me they are that beautiful?!? A Flying V and a Hammond B3 are you kidding me?!?!? And They Are Good!?! Then she sings ... "Give me back my hammer give me back my nails ... Give me back my jeans and my JJ Cale!" Are you F*cking Kidding me?!?!? 8*O

The entire set every song, without exception, was an intelligent, moving, portrait of things a woman so young has no right to know!?! I am completely won over, I know already that Grace Potter & The Nocturnals are going to be a huge part of my life from now on (had no idea it would be This huge a part ... Or make me so many amazing friends!?! I been blessed beyond reason) ... Even skipped watching Michael Franti's set to instead watch the meet and greet line go by. The whole time I can't escape one thought: "You've got Bill Paynes phone number in your pocket ... A 1/2 hour conversation between him and Grace ... Could Change The History of Rock & Roll!?!?!"

But I didn't want to be the old guy giving the hot young rockstar another rockstars#, mainly, didn't want Grace to always think of me in that light. Don't get me wrong, I'm as head over heals in love w/Grace as the rest of you ... But too old and wise to to be smitten with Her ... When my love for her music will clearly last forever. And also decided (watching the meet & greet) that the only thing GPN didn't need in a fan was someone else to tell her how smart and beautiful and talented she was! That was clearly covered!

So que-ing up behind the last dude in the meet & greet. Scott is talking to one line of fans ... Grace another. I am behind the kid talking to Grace ... Who, aside from telling her how smart and beautiful and talented she was ... Was saying how much he loved the record of theirs he had, Nothing But The Water.

"Ohhhh Wait until you hear our New Album (This Is Somewhere) it's so much better!!!" She says. "How could it be?!? NBTW is soooo good!?!" At this point Scott quits on the conversation he's having to chime in with Grace and declare in unison:"Because It Sounds More Like Little Feat!!!!!"

Are You M*therf*cking Kidding Me?!?!?!?!?! 8*O Well the fork being firmly and truly stuck ... I mumbled something about Vt ... How samrt and talented they all were ... And stumbled away in a daze shaking my grinning head. "You never gave her Bill's number monkey boy" My ever present self critical buddy whispered in my ear. All for the best I try to believe as I spot their merch girl and walk over to her ... "Hey baby! Are you on the bus?" as I begin to write something on a lil piece of paper ... "What?!?" She says giving me a look of disbelief I have, thank god, grown to love. It was Jen Crowell ... Scott's ex girlfriend and a hell of a singer songwriter in her own right, and largely responsible for how good The Waterfront Festival is every year.

"Are you selling merchendise for the venue, or are you traveling with the band?" I explain ... "Oooohhh! Well ... It's a Van ... But yeah I'm traveling w/the band"

I go to hand her the lil note which says simply Bill Payne and his # ... "This is ...." She cuts me off with a punch in the arm (something else I have, tg, grown to love :) ... "I Know Who Bill Payne Is!!!" "Could you give that to Grace Darlin'? Wanted her to have it ... But while talking to her didn't want to be "that guy"

And I walked away ... Grinning bigger than ever as it was Jen shaking her head in disbelief. 8*)

And so I signed a deal with the Devil: Let me see so many Grace Potter and The Nocturnals shows that people resent me ... And I will in turn do anything and everything I can on their behalf.

Thank God for Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. Music I believe is the only language that is even Remotely universal ... GPN's music is as close to a Universal language as I ever seen.

Thank you all, again forever, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals!!! You make it better

Any thing I got, anywhere, anytime,

Tipi,
I loved your story. Thank you so much for sharing! I love reading these posts and hearing about how all of our paths led us here. From all different walks of life, here we meet. I agree wholeheartedly that music is that universal language. The only other ones I know of are fine arts and smiles. They are good for both those too; pretty to look at, and have you ever noticed that scanning the crowds at a gpn show will reveal lots of smiles?

Were you still living in DC when they opened for Govt. mule in fall 2007? That was my first show and just as you described yours it was truly something special.

My friend's daughter when to UVM (she was actually on the basketball team, when they were in the America East Conference in 2005). My friend started listening to them through his daughter. He really got into them, and I got into them via osmosis thanks to Pandora. What really hooked me was a show I went to in Dec 2009 before they made it huge. They opened for another band but you wouldn't have guessed that from their energy. They closed with White Rabbit (before Alice in Wonderland had come out) and it was AMAZING. The crowd was heckling the next band for GPN to come back on! I've been a fan ever since, they are amazing live!

My sister is my musical muse and brought me over the TIS CD four years ago. We were all partying and she was getting irritated that I wasnt "listening"...that I was talking to my friends that were with us. They came to Lawrence, Kansas Bottlenecks and my sister made me and hubby go. It cost 10. They place was very small and if I reached my arm out, I could touch any one of the band members they were so crammed on the stage. Van was there and my sister was excited but they both said the show wasnt the best, that they were having a few words between them. Grace came out and did the encores herself....heard that she received a note from the other 3 members that they werent coming out. I am sure the venue didn't help that situation. I remember going into the bathroom, and both sinks were filled with throw up. I was stuck in there forever because I refused to touch anything (I am a germaphob) and there were no toilet paper or paper towels. I left that night wondering what in the world my sister is doing.

The second time I saw them was in Arizona, at the McDowell Mountain Music Festival. It was 7 months later and I knew the music by then. I brought my best friend who lives in Arizona with me and Mule was playing after them. I met Grace that night and she signed my posse shirt. She was really a sweetheart. I met her many times after that, my favorite being in San Francisco at a huge music festival that was going on there. I walked forever to get to the stage and it was a small stage compared to all the big ones. There wasnt very many people there so I was right up front and GPN came out ready to rock..they were off the charts. I remember thinking Grace may have had a few too many. She broke strings on her flying V and was sexy as Hell. She had an interview set up at the Dell tent afterwards so hubby and I walked a mile so that we could see that. The time was supposed to be 4....4 came and went and the interviewer came up to me and asked, "Is she coming?" Then in walks Grace with a big grin and she beelines it straight....over.....to.....me! I couldnt believe it. I was wearing my yellow posse shirt and she must have needed to talk to one of us. So she comes over and is within inches of my face talking about the festival and the shows and how much fun they were having. I was so freaked I wasnt really listenening and was wishing my husband was taking pictures but he was picking his jaw up off the ground from her beauty. I looked behind her and the 3 guys that were interviewing her were standing behind her waiting. I leaned in and whispered in her ear..."I think they are waiting for you." and she turned around and saw them. She then turned back at me and was staring at my lips. I thought to myself, is she going to kiss me? She got even closer than asked, "Do you have any lipstick?" I had just purchased a new color and was wearing it and pulled it out of my pocket. "Sure." I said. She put it on then smacked her lips and asked, "How does it look?" It looks really good, nice color on you" I said then added, "Do you want it?" She said, "Sure, Do you mind?"

This band has worked their tail ends off and struggled for money the whole way. They deserve everything they are getting right now. The days of getting close to Grace are over but I have such fond memories. I know she probably doesnt remember me but I will never forget the times I have had with her. Joining the posse site changed my life. It empowered me to do things I have wanted to do my whole life.

Somewhere I've told my story before, actually in it's probably been in a few places that are now gone, now that I think of it, but it's very much the same as so many of yours out there. Reading Dana's view brought me back some very good memories and here I am posting once again, how my own crazy parade began.

My first show, was Van's 50th show - Pearl Street Northampton. I had no idea who Grace was giving a shout out to at the time, but clapped just the same and marveled that this band had such a dedicated fan. At that point in time, they had been around for about 3 years or so, give or take. I'm pleased to say that I've now met and shared so many shows with a number of dedicated fans, none quite so much as Van, but there is a whole posse of us out there now, and I'm still very proud to be a part of that.

So anyway back to that first show - Pearl St, Northampton Ma 2007 - my sis and I are both music lovers had planned this little getaway halfway between CT where she lives and VT where I live, we've both bought NBTW and love the sound and were psyched for the live show. Can i just say how blown away we were at that time. Pearl Street is a dirty little club, the kind the Nocs have grown up playing in and finessed the craft that they now have in spades. Acoustics there are less than fine, but let me tell you. That one show, that one night made my sis and I fans for life. We already had tickets for Burke Mountain at the end of the month and were thrilled to know that in a matter of weeks we'd have another show to go to.

The rest is kind of history, I started getting on the message board available at the time, joined the street team available back then and told every damn music loving soul that I ran into how great this band from VT was, they just had to go to a live show and experience the Nocturnals. I know whoever I told this to would not be sorry. The friends I've met along the way, and the shows we've shared together, the generosity of the band - starting with our incredble Posse Party at Salt Hill club in Lebanon in 2008, Rocking the Docks at Burlington that same year, and all the wonderful personal moments shared up in Skowhegan, Mass Moca, Ridgefield and at the Bull Moose in Scarborough Maine - I'll never forget them, and cherish all who've shared these with me.

Now I'm looking forward what the future holds, it'll be different I'm sure, and I just can't wait for my favorite band to get all the glory they deserve - I'll still be here, sharing the love with you all and hoping to catch a show with you, down the road.

How I discovered GPN... I guess it was in 2007, maybe 2008 - not sure. I was watching my favorite telvision show at the time - called One Tree Hill. And kinda out of the blue, there was this awesome girl, playing awesome music.
So far, not really that thrillling. It'll get better, I swear. It just my little 'How I discovered GPN and how I came to love GPN' story.

In 2009 I decided I wanted to travel. I turned 18 that March, so I would be legally allowed to travel, and since I took a year off from school, it worked out perfectly. Just let me say that I have been in love with the US since I was little. So no doubt that I would go and visit The States. On my own. So I patiently waited 'till the GPN tour-dates for that May would be online, before I started planning the rest of my trip.

The first date that came online was the show in Lebanon - with the VIP thing. So I got my tickets for that show, and shortly after also the tickets for the show in Boston a day earlier. How I was planning to get to Lebanon? I had no clue.

The day of the show in Boston finally came - I briefly spoke to some people of the Posse to let them know I was gonna be there. They were meeting up in a restaurant before the show. So I went to the street of the HOB and waited. And waited. I had no clue what everybody looked like nor did I know which restaurant they were in. So I ran back to the hostel to e-mail them, recieving a call pretty shortly after (It's also the day I fell in love with modern technology). About fifteen minutes later I got to meet (part of) the Posse for the first time.

The concert was beautiful. Grace was downright hot - as was Cat. And the guys rocked that stage and looked like handsome hippies. But the thing I was absolutely taken away by, was this group of amazing people that called themselves the 'Posse'.
I remember calling my mom the next day, 'Mom, listen - yeah the concert was so cool. But I met these people..."

I felt like being adopted into this cool group - The Girl that Came All the Way from Holland. So the next day I got to tag along to an awesome pre-show party. Instead of taking a greyhound bus that came somewhat close to Lebanon, I got a sweet ride. Followed by the best food I've ever had. And my first glass of wine in three weeks (that's the only thing that sucks about being 18 over there)

I got to meet Grace that day. It was one of the best things ever. She was so nice and excited about the fact that I came all the way from Holland. The show was the best one ever. Like two hours in ecstasy(The shout-out I got, still makes my smile every time I hear it).

So, since I kinda liked the group, and since the band was okay too, I came back for New Years. So yeah - I fell in love with this awesome music, this awesome band, their great energy. I got to meet Benny, see Blues and Lazers at a 21+ show, and the NYE show was like something I had NEVER seen before.

I am the crazy girl from Holland that fell in love with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals; but even more, I met this great great group of people, I've come to love and care about.

Just wanted to say that ;-)

Saw the "Ooo La La" footage from the USO tour on Pallidia. With the throwback to Heart I figured they might have something to fill the void of great music that comes with getting older and all your favorites switching to political songs. Never expected what I found digging through iTunes. The older stuff was just so far from the glitzy "La La" I was shocked. As I purchased more and more, I was even more blown away by the fact both sides of the persona were real. GPN could go rip a tear from a lumberjack with a one song and then have a TSA worker headbanging the next, without missing a beat.

Last night my wife and I caught the French Quarter show (our first) and, for the first time in 20 years, my expectations for a live performance were just blown away. Grace has more talent and presence than any single recording can catch, and the band is top notch. They flow (jam band style) effortlessly through songs that feel highly composed, yet totally spontaneous, while exhausting the crowd as they stand in awe of the performances. It reminds me of live DMB performance because a CD just can't capture the brilliance that shows up on stage.

Please release a high-audio-quality DVD/BR so we can share this masterpiece with more people and enjoy it more often.

It is good but I hope that sometime during this current run they will record it. From listening to the tapes I would have to say that there is a "amped up" edge right now that the Fillmore didn't have.
Still I highly recommend the Fillmore Show, good stuff.

Personally I love what radiohead did with their live benefit show for Haiti. The band let people video the show, fans sent recordings and the band put the audio to it. They let it leak back out to the fans. So you have this amazing show, shot in various angles in various quality with the sweetest audio you ever heard. It's amazing. I am for more live music and live audio to be released thats all.

I first head Grace's voice in 8th grade, when righteous drummer Matt Burr was my Mom's student teacher in Gouverneur, NY - back when the band was at St. Lawrence University. That three-person jazz band grooved its way into an explosive rock band - a damn good one, no doubt. There are days for Original Soul (the first album passed my way); there are nights for rockin' out to last year's self-titled album. Much love GPN!

My good friend, Van E. (Tedheadone) encouraged my to go to the GPN set that took place at the Brookline Massachusetts “Brookline 300″ festival that was held on Sunday Sept. 18, 2005. The band was originally scheduled for a 4:00pm set time but instead played at 3:00pm as a courtesy to a another band who was delayed in arriving later than expected. Van told me that I really had to hear this band and that I should meet him at 4 pm at the XYZ stage. At 3:00 pm I was a 1/2 mile down the street listening to the Buffalo Tom set on another stage. I showed up at 3:55pm at the stage were to play and as I was arriving on the scene, the band was just getting off the stage, I had just MISSED my first opportunity to hear GPN.

I was unaware of the 18th annual Boston Music Awards even happening on Sept. 28, 2005 until after if had occurred. In those days it was an expensive admission ticket and usually just music business attendees and the nominated artists. I remember that during the week that followed, I read comments on a local music bulletin board by people in attendance raving about Grace Potter's fabulous one song performance.

Less than a week later I attended the Harvard Sq. Business Association’s annual “Octoberfest” which was on Sunday October 2, 2005. One of the stages that year were co-sponsored by New England Music Organization (NEMO) who has also organized that year's Boston Music Awards. That was my very first GPN show. I stood there in the heart of Harvard Sq., among a fairly sparse crowd and was stunned at how instantly likable this band was to me. I am certain of that date from the date stamp on my photos - those of the band and of Van E. in a bright yellow “Iowa” T-shirt that day.

In the interim, I have been back for many more shows. I think that the show at the House of Blues Boston this past Friday (March 25, 2011) was my 16th. r 17th.

An interesting follow up: after the show, Larry and I went in different directions. I headed down Brattle Street and ran into another good friend Tim. His daughter in law had a table set up and was selling custom tee shirts. He told me that when he came thru the Square, "there was this great girl just wailin' away, you woulda loved her"

My response? "I know, i was right at the edge of the trailer they were performing on!"

I so envy those of you who knew about GPN for years and have seen them perform. I am a new, but dedicated fan. I first saw Grace when she was sitting in with The Tonight Show Band one night. At first I was dazzled by her stage presence, but then I heard her begin to sing. Finally, someone who can throw their back and let rip!

I had given up on new rock. I found myself going back into my music library to hear the real stuff. Coming from the South, Rock to me means rhythm and blues, spirituals, back beats, and clear singers who can convey a message. I have been around the block on rock since the earliest days, and have just now discovered the hardest working rock band as if out of a time machine. Alone in bedroom at night, listening on headphones, I close my eyes and hang on every note, every word. Unfortunately because of health issues, I am unable to see the band perform. However, thanks to their work ethic, I feel as if am right there, in the front row. Thanks for trying so hard guys, Rock On!

there is a DVD - "Bringin' it Home Live!" VT Public Television aired it and Ben & Jerry's sponsored or helped sponsor the tour - this would be in 2005. Many of the shows have been taped but don't recall any being distributed - anyone else out there have more to add?

Xaphan . . welcome to the forums.

The Bringing It Home DVD is listed in the GPN Store and seems to be in stock.

Do you have the Nothing But The Water CD/DVD set ?
Think the NBTW in the GPN Store is just the CD but the set appears to be available on Amazon.

As Carrjo said video of the December 2009 Fillmore show (San Francisco) can be downloaded at iTunes.

If you are interested in audio captures of live shows, tapers have created a treasure trove on archive.org .. this link (http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=collection%3AGracePotterandtheNoc turnals&sort=-date) will take you to the GPN pages.
It's not a complete set of their shows by any means, but if you work your way back you'll get an excellent sense of the band's music history.

The Archive section on this site has recaps going back several years that were brought over from the old boards. You might enjoy reading those also.

Have fun !

Well, I'm one of the newbies and quite jealous of you "old hands". I found Grace and the band purely by accident! I was aimlessly channel surfing and stopped on a random music channel (don't recall which one) because my coffee was ready. Before I could pour my first cup I heard a kick ass guitar blast out of my television. Then a female voice punched me right in the pleasure receptors of my brain. I looked at the television to see one gorgeous blond with a voice strait out of hard rock heaven! It was "Paris" and from the first time Grace squealed the word floor, I was hooked. The next thing I found was the live video of "Nothing but the water". Let me tell ya, she has more talent and soul in her little finger than most "popular" singers in the last decade.

I'm from the south too and in this neck of the woods fans love country music, heavy metal, and old school southern rock/blues with equal passion. Add a bit of Pink Floyd jazz groove with a little bit of the Doors, and Zeplin, and you get a feel for the eclectic tastes in music we have here. This band pulls every good thing out of a dozen different genres puts them in a bowl, stirs, and feeds your soul! I have introduced their music to every club and bar in my town (Not to mention my facebook page is plasterd with the band) and without exception they burn the house down!

I'll quote my mom (a retired bar manager) "Look out Janice! There's a 21st century girl here to steal all your thunder!"

I first saw Grace on a show, I think it was called Woodstock,Then and Now. I imediately went to You Tube and watched the full video of her version of the song Woodstock. I haven't heard that much energy and feeling in a voice since I've seen Bruce Springsteen, and I've seen him 9 times. Her voice came out of the monitor and SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE! It was like hearing live music for the first time all over again. I saw her in Seattle this winter at the Crocodile and LOVED IT! I'm looking forward to watching Grace Potter and The Nocturnals become one of the greatest live bands of all time!

I discovered Grace when she opened up for Gov't Mule at the Oakale in CT. The whole band blew me away. Their vibe just blasted off the stage and into the audience. I was an instant convert. The icing on the cake was the group drumming at the end of the show. That really struck a chord with me. I bought NTBTW and This Is Somewhere in the lobby and have never looked back!

My second bonnaroo and I was looking through the line-up, researching bands I had not heard of so I would have an idea of who I wanted to see. Toothbrush and My Table hooked me, not to mention Nothing but the Water. I couldn't believe she even knew who JJ Cale was! I haven't been this excited about a band in a very long time, and I'm happy for them that they are experiencing success. Just please GPN...DON'T SELL OUT!!! Absolutely nothing wrong with commercial success; we all gotta eat, but I just hope they don't lose that that edge that makes folks like me love them.

It was only a few months ago. I was surfing around YouTube, and saw an ad on the side of the page for the Paris video. i clicked on it to watch the video and was blown away by the song and the energy, and of course Grace. I immediately downloaded the new album from iTunes. I then noticed that GPN was playing Irving Plaza in NYC a few weeks later. The shows were sold out, but I got tickets on StubHub. I went to the second night, with very little knowledge of GPN other than the new album. I was BLOWN AWAY!!! From that night I was completely hooked, and I can't get enough.

I saw her perform with one of my favorite bands, Gov't Mule. Over the years I have followed her mainly over the internet videos and am truly blown away. Her on stage presence at Bonnaroo this year has left me speechless. The Nocturnal's are hitting their groove and Grace has the "it" factor. A big welcome from another Wilco fan, roadhse,
I was at that Concord show too, I got a text saying to " keep my eyes open" but not what for . . turned around to scan the room and within seconds spotted Matt walking down the aisle. Turned out my friend and I were 6 rows to the front and left of Matt, Grace, Scott, & Benny (in seat order)
It is a serious kick to watch one of your favorite bands with your other favorite band in the house :)

I went to the 1st Solid Sound (skipped this year) and, knowing GPN was playing BVT's Waterfront Fest on Sat night, I was hoping they might take a drive down for Jeff's solo show on Sunday. Grace adding the cover of Muzzle of Bees to some setlists keeps me hoping for a GPN / Wilco hook up somewhere / sometime ... SS#3 would be perfect.

I guess technically is was the VH1 You Oughta Know ads but I just wrote Grace off as a pop star being pushed as a rock just because she had a guitar. I'm glad that wasn't my one and only opinion. Next I just happend to see GPN on the VH1 Divas Salute to the Troops when it first aired and remember thinking I'm gonna have to check these guys out. Fast foward to April I think it was and I had the VH1 Divas show playing in the background while I was on the computer and had already decided to pick up the cd with Paris on it. But I wason You Tube and just checked to see what kind of live videos I could find. And saw a video of Grace and Warren Haynes and I was like wait a minute because I knew my opinion of Grace was compleatly wrongs. The I watched a live version of Stop The Bus and was like I've got to get the album this is on also. And it just so happend that I found all three albums that day and bought them and my fandom has only grown since. I saw my first GPN show this past Saturday at Floyd Fest and will be seeing them again in Charlotte later this month.

I saw a You Tube version of Grace "CORTEZ THE KILLER" with the other folks, and still listen to it about once a week, then searched for more as her voice seemed really mature and full for her age. Found "Big White Gate" and was hooked. Began listening to anything I could find and then found how tied to the community they are. Talented and a wonderful attitude, a great mix.
Great, fun band that really make good music. I like them so much that this will be the first time I will have ever been to a concert , ever, in Atlanta. I love music and always have but have never been beyond Eddies Attic. GPN is that good.

I told this to Grace at a "meet and greet", my son and I just happened to catch the Divas show... which just blew us both away. Next I soaked up everything I could find on YouTube and the late night shows. It's not only her immense talent, but the joy of the entire band which is so impressive. Our organization was fortunate enough to book GPN for a show and of course they were fantastic.

A forum I frequent for a badly overpriced hobby has a tradition of a "Sunday Night Soundcheck". Late last year or early 2011, someone posted the new album with a comment it was the best album he'd heard during the year. I saw the picture on the cover of a near model, went "yeah, right", but clicked his link to a live performance of Oasis. Googled the band, realized I'd seen their Divas act without knowing who they were, which of course reran repeatedly. Watched the performance again, and watched Grace match Ann Wilson note for note on "Crazy for You", and was hooked. Three live shows this year, and looking forward to a new album.

I was going to visit Nashville and I always like to take in a show at The Ryman. I get the Ryman newsletter which announced that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals were scheduled for the first night I was going to be in town. Not knowing much about them, I asked a friend who mentioned they had seen them on TV and said they were good. So I figured I get the tickets. The show sells out and they annouce a second show. Well, Monday works better for me, so I buy those tickets and put the Sunday tickets on eBay - they are gone in an hour. I figure, these folks seem to have quite a following so I bought the latest CD. WOW! I loved it. So I bought another. By the time I got to Nashville, I was already a fan, but that is nothing to seeing them put on a show!!! It was sensational and I am hooked.

I'm sure glad my friend saw them on TV or I may have gone to a different show that week at the Ryman. No way it would have been as good and I would have missed out on becoming a fan of one of the most entertaining and talented bands I've seen come around in years.

I'm also glad I went Monday because we got a bonus when Kenny Chesney showed up to sing You & Tequila.

While Grace's presence, vocals and songwriting are obviously the spark (or raging fire), I've always been impressed on how GPN is A BAND. There are few solo acts that strike much interest for me, so I'm happy to this day that they still seem to function as a unit and give off the vibe that this wonderful thing is a real band effort. Scott and Matt have evolved into true forces on stage and the addition of Benny & Cat's musicianship and energy has really pushed GPN as one of, if not the best live experiences around.

I had a pocket camera with very limited exposure/shutter control and snapped a few shots. Most were badly blurred but here are a few that are somewhat OK. They're nothing even approaching quality work, but I thought they might be nice to have here for historical purposes.

I was just skimming through channels when I lit on NPR and saw GPN onstage. It comprised songs and interviews with Grace and I was hooked. So the question is, when is a national tour and you have to hit the Northwest. You'll love Seattle.

Like many other middle aged males I discovered Grace searching for Neil Young covers on Youtube. After listening to Cortez the killer I explored the net and was instantly hooked! Sadly here in Scandinavia (I am a norwegian living in Copenhagen) GPN is totally unknown. I hope they soon will make an effort in Europe. I am pretty sure their music will appeal to a large audience over here. Hopefully the forthcoming album will go worldwild!
