After seeing Grace and the band for the 3rd time in a year - and their great cover of Berlin's "Take My Breath Away", I was wondering what songs the fans would love to hear them cover. There was a nicely comprehensive list of what they've already done (http://tinyurl.com/2epcgyv) but there are 3 songs I would LOVE to see them try.
1) "If You Go" by the Nighthawks. While the Nighthawks' version is great, my love for this song came from watching a blues band from Penn State, Queen Bee and the Blue Hornet Band, belt this one out. Tonya Browne's vocals changed this song for the better, and I think that Grace could kill this one, too. You can hear the Nighthawks version on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTjj_-fhCno):
2) "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks. Grace could pull off any Stevie Nicks song, and with the bands current style, this would be a great match. Imagine this as an encore!
3) "Jolene" - Dolly Parton. Mindy Smith does a great version of this tune (if you've never heard it) but last night during the show there was a moment while Grace was singing when this song just popped into my head. And I thought - she'd be perfect!
So, any songs out there others would love to hear?

Grace and Scott duet - cover of "Kandi" by One Eskimo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFVIl1LPePI) – as is, or gender reversed with Grace taking lead and Scott the refrain.
[Kind of bears a resemblance to "He Called Me Baby" by Nancy Wilson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blRZB6K_Id4) doesn't it?]

I loved their take on Heart of Glass and hope they would vary their cover(s) more from show to show. How about putting Paint it Black and Getting in Tune back in the rotation?
I don't know how this popped in my head, but I bet GPN could deliver on any number of Elton John songs. With Grace on the keys, it seems like a natural. whether soft (Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters) or rockin' (Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting). Or how about "Burn Down the Mission"? Have they ever covered Elton?
P.S. As a relative newbie last year, my first reaction to the NYE show featuring Top Gun was "How cheesy" but I was wrong. They pulled it off great, and I am excited to see what they do this year. How about a web cast for us non-New Englanders?

OK, I'll bite. Two suggestions -
Summing up 2010: "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" emphasis on the line about sporting short skirts and high heel shoes....
and eveytime I hear T. Rex's "Bang a Gong...(get it on)" I really think it's dying to be covered by the Nocs - Cat driving the bass line, dual guitars and organ digging a deeper and deeper groove on that same riff....
There are so many this band could pull off, but here are some of my dreams of covers for this band.
WILLIN' by Little Feat
I would love to hear Benny take the lead vocals on this number. Granted GPN could do any Little Feat number justice but something about Benny knocking this one down would make me weep for joy I feel. I mean I can hear him singing, "I'll be willin' to be movin'/I've been kicked by the wind, robbed by the sleet/Had my head stoved in, but I'm on my feet....
Black Country Woman by Led Zeppelin
Now again with Grace at the helm I think they could crush any Zeppelin number and thats really saying something. Grace can hit those Plant high notes for sure. I pick this tune because its a lesser known song from a huge band. I think its important when covering a bands tunes you pick the rare gem the hidden nugget of goodness. I'd love to hear Grace nail this song for sure.
Your Song by Elton John
Now I know what your saying, come on right. Seriously though can you just see it, its in the middle of a burning down kick ass show, its time for the cool down number, the lights dim and Grace starts knocking down the piano intro, and comes in all quiet cause the place is slient do to the beauty of it all. I'd like to see it.
I feel this band at any moment has the ability to destory famous tunes that hold serious memories for all fans out there. I think they have chose wisely on the covers they do.

Ok why not!! Some good suggestions so far some songs not familiar with will have to check out.
"The Edge of Seventeen" could be killer with Grace's voice, what a song, one of the great epic songs of rock.
After listening to the album version and a live 1983 video seems to me Stevie couldn't really give the song the power treatment it deserves . Yes she has a great voice but doesn't have the true vocal power required in the second part of the song to really give it the force it needs. Think it should slowly built up an up and up until you're almost overwhelmed by the shear power of her voice by the last 2-3 verses with a softer fading tail off. Seems like she is trying to do that but just can't get there. Grace and say Ann Wilson got the builds for this kind of stuff, say like a linebackers body and Stevie doesn't, she's sort of frail. But MG she still can still sing.
A Fleetwood Mac/Nicks song that would be great is "Big Love" but would need a bucket of water around to cool things off. Would be great if Cat has the vocal chops to be the bands Christine or not what ever she does is great.
Some from me 1. " I Wouldn't Want To BE Like You" Alan Parson Project, would nice to hear a female version of "f--- off or get lost", good sounds for the band to work on.
2. " War of the Hearts" Sade, would be fantastic to hear Grace belt out " I could aim but I could not fire, got a bullet to spare, to kill my desire..... and " I'm loaded don't know where to point this thing......" band could work on timing and pace to pick it up a little.
3. got to be some Patsy Cline in the mix, maybe " " Leaving' On Your Mind", it might be a hard reach and would have be her own take. I've head some covers, Lorrie Morgans' is good but when you hear Patsy sing of loss and what might of been it tears your guts out and few have ever ever done it better.

Wow all great suggestions!!! Came to tell Doc how good a pick I thought Wouldn't Wanna Be Like You was ... Don't even like the song that much but can hear Grace doing it and killing it already! Then I see Marty suggesting If You Go?!?!?!?! Have been a Huge Nighthawks Fan since I was half Graces age and She Would Kill It!!!! "If you go ... You take my whole life with you baby!"

Thanks for the kind word TipB, this thread has got me thinking, I know a artist or band had to make their mark with original material and GPN has a great start on this but it's alot of fun trying to figure out what they could do justice or give a great work a new look.
Some times the same words spoken by someone else will reach someone who was deaf to the exact same sentence or pharse, like a parents words, a peers words, a bosses or co worker's words. Some times you want to listen to some one else.
Got a song that just poped up...... " Ain't No Grave Can Hold MY Body Down" by Brother Claude Ely, has been done by sister Rosette Tharpe, Johnny Cash, and I'm sure others but I can't find a up tempo a hard rock pace of the song yet. One of the bands at my church has done it somewhat that way and it makes your hair stand on end. MG just thinking about what Grace and the guys could do to this, bring it out at one of the more blueser( is that a word) venues...they would just blow some minds, MG you'd have to pass a law!!!
Maybe they have already done this song but I couldn't find it, sure someone will let me know, for now just an excited newbe.
Bruce,
I've been thinking of this thread all day. Here are some new covers for the band to ponder....
Ten Years Gone: Led Zeppelin
Again Grace doing Plant's part plays for a new way of hearing the song. Plus close your eyes, ok now imagaine Grace singing this part, " Did you ever really need somebody, and really need'em bad/ Did you ever really want somebody, The best love you ever had/ Do you ever remember me baby, did it feel so good/'Cause it was just the first time, and you knew you would"
That switch in gender roles for Zeppelin songs would be killer for the band to bust out. Plus as with most Zep tunes, Page has serious layers of his playing that it would allow Scott and Benny to weave through the song.
Hand of Fate: The Rolling Stones
Black and Blue as a album never gets enough credit. Seriously its Ron Woods first album with the band, and its great. This number would be excellent to hear GPN do. Again Scott and Benny could pull of Keith and Ronny so well its like they should play Stones songs because they can and they would do justice to such a great song.
Sinister Kid: The Black Keys
I think I'm throwing this in there cause I love the song, but I want to hear Grace do it lol. I have no doubt about GPN doing the song playing the parts. My reason for this song is simple, I want to hear Grace bust out this tune.
More later as they come to me......wonder if the band will see these suggestions.....and toy with them a bit :-)

And adding a quick one and done with the band getting whole again --- from "The Wild and the Innocent..." a little Kitty's Back .... here she comes....here she comes....
OK, I'll bite. Two suggestions -

id like to see the Nox book one of their 200 shows a year in Athens, Georgia and learn a Bloodkin song or 2 at some point between right now and showtime. id like to hear them do:
-morning chrome (he was the moon, she was the sun)
-new horse and carriage
-quarter tank of gasoline
-#1 good luck charm

This is getting to be an interesting thread to me, have checked out just about all the songs suggested. Found liked most but 2 didn't do much for me- " If You Go" and "Ten Years Gone" couldn't get into them. Guess that's the point of this post.
Why not?, they were suggested by someone for a common goal- what would you like GPN to cover, so the suggestions should have common themes, sounds, whatever, so why the dislike? I'm sure some of the songs I mentioned got a hun?, I don't like his suggestions.
In the past I use to suggest stuff, songs I liked to someone and find out they didn't like it or even hated it. OMG how lame, how could they not like something I loved!!! Of course it went the other way too, MG how could you not like that- what the hell's wrong with you!
I've thought about this in the past and have revisited it the past week or so, why do we like what we like musically? What is it about a combination of sounds that appeals to us, involves, becomes something we need, have to have. I'm sure alot of this is covered in the study of music and I could get more informed it I wasn't so intelectually lazy, might google it and try to learn something.
Just from what little I know I'll plow ahead any way, a'in't the internet great you can say something that you absolutly know nothing about and no teacher, professor, editor, boss, parent, peer or just about anyone can keep you from making an ass out of yourself.
Seems to me we're born with some fundamental sound tolerance range, some fundamential harmonic tolerance, some personal wave length resonse that feels good or right to us. I think everyones' is different but have alot of over laps, there is a range- a low and high bracket and most fall some where in there. The combinations of sounds and the way they are combined will appeal to each of us differently, to some the sounds will be out of their comfort zone others just right, this where we get the like and dislike of the same sounds. I think we are born with this and can't do much to change it, can you learn to like some music you hate the first time you heard it. Seems like if you like a song you will still like it 30 yrs later and if you hated something 30 yrs ago you still hate it.
To me there has to be something built into us that makes for the different likes or dislikes of music, thank god there are artists out there trying to find combinations of sounds for us to sample, because we need them, we just can't help it.

Back to this thread again, been listening to alot of stuff that had gathered some dust, good to hear songs you haven't heard in awhile.
Is there an interview or writing from Grace on what she looks in a cover song? Would be good to know what interests her/them; why do it, how to do it, what to change, how to do it justice, make it a fresh take, and maybe a good reason for doing it- what can they add to the original version. Or is it none of this BS, we're doing it because we just like the damm song. Seems like a new band and/or a touring band has to do covers and be good at them, thus have to make good choices if they want to succeed. I know they will have to make it on original material if they want to be remembered and be significant. But what artist/band ever made it from the get go on all original material? Would like to be informed on this.
To the suggestions:
1. " I Don't Have To Crawl " Rosanne Cash from " King's Record Shop " album. One of the great albums, not a great country album but a great album period. 5-6 killer songs, some slow some fast, unbelievable musical talent by everyone, this song written by and album produced by her husband Rodney Crowell now EX, guess artistic nirvana doesn't always mean domestic bless. Go figure maybe it's a country album after all.
2. " Fast Car " Tracy Chapman from " Tracy Chapman " album, song about hopelessness and despair faced by some Americans, sung with an undercurrent of hope for a brighter future- kind of reaffirms the optimistic nature of the human spirit, but you just wonder if there is a car fast enough to get her where she wants to go...Springsteen like song.
3. " The End Is Not In Sight " The Amazing Rhythm Aces from " Too Stuffed To Jump " album... old song rearranged and sung by Russell Smith ( got to be one of the under rated vocalists ) Imagine Grace and the guys have wondered if the end is in sight after a long tour. Don't know how they do it or any touring group in any genre does it, just glad they can and do.
4. " I Count The Tears " or " On Broadway " by The Drifters any greatest hits album.....Got to expand the listening base here's to the R&B section... Tears- short catchy tune, has alot of nahnanahnahnanan.....nananahna..... like Ooola..lala..lala... (hope I got it right ) Broadway- could be sung with a fierce determination that nothing will stop me from becoming a star, kind of like what's happening now for real!!!
Will give it a rest for now, hope this hasn't been a bore or a PITA, just getting back into good music after being away for awhile.
Bruce,
Obviously any Janis Joplin song, but I'd love to hear her sing Move Over.
I keep coming back to this thread cause I love it some much. Its like a wish list for the band ......
Never gonna give you up: I know your thinking another song on a black keys record but seriously the black keys covered this number from Philadelphia Soul legends Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, and Jerry Butler....I think Grace would crush it just make people weep in the crowd on this one...
I wanna be adored: Yes the Stone Roses people, I know easy call but listen to the tune and put Grace's voice in there behind the band come on it would be mind melting....
Tweeter and the Monkey Man: The Traveling Wilburys people the super group of George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan. This tune sung by Bob is excellent and I would love to hear Grace spin this story maybe an encore or something but this would be a great cover to hear.
:-) Love this thread....I'll be back....

A truly beautiful song that I don't think The Who themselves ever played live, likely since it's a Pete lead vocal. I can't even recall Pete singing it in a solo show. I'm trying to picture Matt doing the Moon drum rolls at the end.

OK- not that anyone else cares, but it was bugging me that I couldn't think of a time when The Who or Pete ever played The Song is Over. Searching the Who concert guide http://www.thewho.net/concertguide/
reveals Pete played it 3 times in 2000, twice during special presentations of Lifehouse at Sadler Wells, and once for VH1 Storytellers. It was also performed by either Roger or Lou Reed (!) at the "Daltrey sings Townshend" special PPV at Carnegie Hall in 1994. I figured, if I was going to the trouble of looking it up, I'd share. I agree, a great song to cover.

Thanks for the info Charles! 'The Song Is Over' is one of my favorite Who songs :)
i have met Charles he is a hard core Who/Pearl Jam guy. thanx for the stats Charles a handfull of obscure performances like that for Tho Who/Towsend basically means they never played it live, considering they have played thousands of shows.
requesting "The Song Is Over" at red rox for Charles. I hope u r reading this Grace (as if...and while u r, please send your helicopter 4 me to get to telluride)
id have asked for the Ogden but Heath is more likely to make rr
...Charles any chance u r going to GPN in Telluride? I know its 6 hours from Denver with no snow or traffic driving fast but someone from this board has got to hit that! u never know what u might get rewarded with onstage

If GPN ever headlined Red Rocks, I'd expect to see all you East Coast GPN fans out here, because there is no better venue in the world. It's like a Mecca for the hard-core fans of just about any band.
Eric- I'm not planning on Telluride. I have a meeting early the next morning, and the mountain weather is not that predictable. I'll be happy to catch them in Denver the next night. Admittedly, if it was The Who or Pearl Jam, I would go (no offense GPN, but come on we are talking The Who and Pearl Jam!:))
I do have a hard-core Who/Neil Young concert friend in Telluride who will likely go to the show. He's active in the annual Blues & Brews festival and I think GPN appeared at it a few years back.

excellent song. Love Pete. Revisited much of "Chinese Eyes..." stuff on UTube over the weekend.
right off the top of my head I'll throw out, "The Seeker" as potential GPN grab-it-and-thrash-it material.
I got some more I'd like to hear and were thinking about......Nice to see "The Who" representing so strong along the fan base. "The seeker" is the jam and would be a seriously cool cover I agree....
Hot For Teacher by Van Halen: I would love to see Grace pull this out, Grace doing a version of David Lee Roth would be priceless, It would be so good and would provide a funny tune to the set list.
Fame by David Bowie: It would sum up there crazy year, and Catherine would destroy the bass line. Come on GPN doing some Bowie you know you'd like to hear it.
There is a light that never goes out by The Smiths: I know what your thinking really wags come on. But to be totally honest I'd love to hear Grace do this number accoustic. Sorry I grew in the 80's and the smiths were huge.
More later of course, my favorite thread....

Back again, hard to resist more suggestions. Eric, think your right about the Rocs, never been there but from what I've heard having to be drug away from there is about the only excuse one has for leaving the place, just get a water bottle, some C rats and hide out in the rock spaces until the next show comes along!
To the suggestions:
" Brother Louie " the Stories. This sung by Grace with all her power and the band working in some good riffs/solos could blow up a place.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-5Y5PX2qHQ
The other, think the guys need to do their own version of the quote/unquote rock classic " Louie, Louie ". Think if they did it could/might rank right up at the top of all the versions done over all the years. Don't know if there is a version with a female lead that's worth a shit. Even if there was if Grace and the guys did it, anything else would be just get out of here!

First, Eric, FYI I sent the link to the "Down by the River" cover to "Telluride Bob" and many other Neil fanatics I know, the day it was posted. Except for The Who, I have seen Neil more than any other act.
Second, all is well and good to talk about covers we like to see, but NYE excepted, I see that as of last night the band is still playing White Rabbit almost every show, sometimes Heart of Glass. Maybe Golden is to be added since it was played again last night. Of course Golden would be obscure to all but MMJ fans, not that I'm complaining.
The rest of the set list is pretty standard, and definitely they should be promoting the latest CD, but why not increase the variety of the covers they play? To use an example close to my Heart (no pun intended)- Pearl Jam has a huge catalog after 10+ albums and their set lists are always unpredictable and totally different, usually approaching 140+ PJ songs each tour, but you can count on 2-3 covers most nights, usually during their encores, and they have about 20 covers they pull from.
I'd be in favor of giving White Rabbit a rest and substituting something different each night. Lots of decent suggestions have been made on this thread, but even bringing back prior GPN covers like Paint it Black, Getting in Tune would be fine. Down by the River the other night was epic and should get more occasional attention. The Led Zep cover KC posted above was pretty cool too BTW.
"its so hard for me , standin here all alone, when u could be, taking me, to teluriiiiiiiiide..."
i saw nych @ rr when they did greendale and lucinda williams opened. i bet u were there. epic times on the rox! i cant remember if they did down by the river or cowgirl in the sand at the end, or both, but that was the nasty!
sorry i cant stay away from red rox, well since i mentioned her and grace reminds me of Lucinda there at red rox ill bail myself out again with 2 more covers for the thread-Lucinda Williams this time (Grace has already covered "Joy")
lets hear "Honey Bee" and "Changed the Locks" next from LW, now BOTH of those songs she should REALLY DO....COME ON NOW who is with me???
Red rocks red rocks, I'm holding out till the band plays MSG or Radio City. Those I've had in my head for years now.....an now more covers...
Presence of the Lord by Blind Faith.
Come on Grace on the organ, its not a long song, but I think this band could do it justice.
Raspberry Beret by Prince (covered by the Hindu Love Gods)
Seriously this would be killer too, if they did it like the Love Gods. RIP Warren Zevon.
This Flight Tonight by Joni Mitchell
I think I just want to hear Grace do a Joni song. I think I've heard Grace sing this in a dream sometime ago.
Gotta love this thread.....
i am quite confident GPN could play radio city music hall right now. especially if they do goodbye kiss on leno next week which is not a rumor i heard but definately one id luv to start. seems to me Grace prefers the smaller standing room concert halls though.
still, i would bet my paycheck they do radio city music hall or central park summer stage this summer tour. ("summer tour" hahaha i think we r still on the last summer tour, did it end yet?)

I was just listening to Melissa Etheridge's "Royal Station 4:16" and immediately thought Grace and the Nocturnals could do an awesome take on this. I love the way this song starts so quietly, but then picks up steam as the drums and harmonica start channeling the trains. There is a piece for every band member to shine on this song. I think it would be amazing.

Long time fan of M.E.'s music and agree 4:16 would be a great cover . . but . .
I'd like to see it as part of the acoustic set Grace, Scott and Benny have been doing mid-show. See what you think . . .

I'd love to see the band make the next move from 9:30 clubish type rooms to theaters next like the fillmore as they are starting too. theater type rooms of 3,000 seats to 10,000 seats are next I wonder how long till they move to hockey halls, its only a matter of time.........

I would love to see that happen because of the greater number of people GPN would reach, but, for purely selfish reasons I hope they continue to play the smaller clubs. Being able to get close to the stage without feeling like you're going to be crushed is important to me. I want to see GPN at Higher Ground every December, and at Lake Champlain Maritime Festival every summer.

This would absolutely work as a part of the acoustic set...you still get that train feeling from the guitar, but I'd love to hear Matt's take on the drums. I think he'd be incredible.
I wish GPN would do like a week or a five day run at the Flynn Theatre in downtown Burlington. Then release that on dvd box set or something silly. Just a big release on DVD with the option to purchase the audio as well. lol I know right so greedy.....just saying a long run in VT at the Flynn would be killer plus I think they might be reaching the point where Higher Ground isn't big enough to hold them very soon.

I think that Heart has earned their place in rock and roll history. Of course I'm 50 years old and grew up listening to them so I may a bit more partial than most of GPN's fans. Ann and Nancy Wilson are rock royalty, they paved the way for girls like Grace. I think as long as GPN is doing cover songs throwing a Heart tune in the mix is a real treat and if anything it really showcases the both Grace's range and the bands musicality.
I would think that if 30 years from now a young rock n roll phenom is coming up and she covers the old GPN standards that Grace and company would be honored.

Ann and Nancy Wilson are rock royalty, they paved the way for girls like Grace. . . . .
Nicely stated . . quoted a part but agree with all that you said. Am a long time fan of Heart and had wondered how Ann and Grace would be together . . answer - fricking fantastic. Plus Grace said at least once that I remember how happy she was to work with two of her heroes.
Wags . . don't misunderstand . . no one is saying you have to like Ann and Nancy's music.
But their "endorsement" of Grace was pretty sweet. Know first hand that some people finally paid attention and took Grace and the Nocturnals seriously because Heart sat in with them on Divas. :)
Don't get me wrong I understand Hearts place in music history for sure, their songs just never hit me. I respect them and what they did. I'm sure having Heart stand up and say, "hey these GPN folk are the real deal" was a huge boost to GPN for sure. I can never give Nancy Wilson enough credit for writing the tunes in Almost Famous. I guess some performers just click with us and some don't. Heart just never got me, but I respect them.

Just thought of another song that I'd love to see them do: "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger. Metallica did some great things with this song, and I bet the band could do it up, too. And I'd love to see a live version of "Cortez the Killer" other than this video clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paeNnR33i5Q) where the sound is pretty mediocre (but the rendition of the song is awesome with Satriani and Kimock).

The Librarian: My Morning Jacket
Its a haunting little number, more of the gender which thing going on. However I think Grace is really good doing Jim James songs.
Alex Chilton: The Replacements
Loved this band for many reasons. This is the song they should do from them. It's upbeat and killer, its even playable in Rockband 2 if you weren't alive when the album was released.

I just dont get why we cant overcome the stigma associated with jambands. I feel like often this fanbase tries to enforce the notion that gpn is not a jamband and i dont get it. I myself would not classify them as a jamband, but you can not deny that much of their fan base discovered them through that avenue. Be it with govt. mule, or on the jam cruise, or at one of their countless festivals they have played over the years. I know that members of the band have also been motivated and inspired musically through their own experiences within the genre. Yes, they do their own thing, of course they do, if they were simply more of the same we would not be here as loyal fans.
Wags, you may be right about them not covering a dead tune, but, you have to remember that they can pretty much do whatever moves them, they are in control, and us fans for the most part eat up whatever they throw out there. Achey breaky? I loved it! I grinned all the way through that video, and not because I love that song or billy ray.
I am not trying to start something here...nothing but love from me, but your response prompted me to bring up something that I have been pondering for awhile now.
Guava:
I feel you with the anti-jam tag that is out there. GPN does too Jam, listen to break down in Oasis or the break in Nothing but the Water as it leaves the gospel and moves into the groove. That's Jam people. I get it that they don't want to be stuck in any one thought process about their music. Grace drives the songs too, meaning that they could be going nuts, going way off, but Grace brings them back in for a safe landing. I like to say that GPN is a band that jams, but there not a JAMBAND. Meaning there are no 20+ minute numbers that go to outerspace, however they do go into that area from time to time.
I just heard a tune this band should cover for sure.....
Pass The Wine: The Rolling Stones
On the re-release of Exile on Main St. there is a second disc of b-side goodies.
That second disc is where you find this little number.
It would be killer, and it could have a nice Scott harmonica goody in there.

My dream covers...
#1 - "I'm a Ram (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kVlQd3bSQg)" by Al Green. Their have been some rockin' covers of this by Big Sugar and Gov't Mule (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIdnoip4BqE)...but I don't think they quite capture the sexy, sexy groove this song can offer.
#2. - "Seen it All Before (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXvSwN9DFzQ)" by Amos Lee. Stunning song that would highlight Grace's amazing pipes.
#3 - "All The Love You Need (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvM-AKrzBXM)" by Big Head Tood & The Monsters. It all comes down to love...
LiveAloha:
Funny but in College "I am A Ram" was like a song that everyone played from time to time....
now on with more covers......
I'll be back:
Agents of Good Roots
If you were into early/mid 90's rock bands this one was a good one. They never broke the super big time but they wrote good tunes. They were from Richmond, VA.
Detlef Schrempf:
Band of Horses
I just like this band and would love to see GPN tackle one of their numbers.
The Golden Age:
Beck
I think this would be a great cover, the flaming lips also do a version that is really quite good. I think GPN could do a knock out version.
again I love this post.....wonder if they actually read it.....
More cover tunes that came across my brain today....
Planet Telex:
Radiohead
One of those great numbers from the bends.
Fuck Your Face:
Phish
I was figuring today, if there gonna do one why not do one they rarely play. I was orginally thinking Destiny Unbound but I think the lyrics in Fuck your Face are way to funny and good not to do as a cover. Plus that middle part is shred tastic.
more later.....
guava6982
02-09-2011, 09:49 PM
Fuck your face may just do that...
How about a cover song that the dead does? Like, around and around. That would be fun...
on the topic of cover songs, what about the new years movie cover? Is anyone thinking what I am thinking for this year's re-enactment?
Boogie nights...the music is super groovetastic and the costumes would be so fun! I can see it now...the boys would all fight for the role of dirk diggler, and Grace or Cat can roller skate around the stage... It seems kinda perfect to me.
guava:
I hope some day we see GPN cover Phish and the Grateful Dead, I just don't think it will ring true right now. Believe me as a huge fan of those two bands I would freak out if they broke out Attics of my life accoustic style or something. There is always hope.....

Got another bunch of tunes.......
"You Are"
Pearl Jam
Love the version from the MSG DVD, would love to hear Grace sing it and Scott and Benny destroy it.
"two of us"
The Beatles
Come on during the middle of the show, benny, scott and Grace three part harmony it would be so sweet
"bodysnatchers"
Radiohead

Jasmine, liked your suggestion, the movie was cheesy but I liked some of the songs.
Maybe they could do "Streets of Fire" for a new years theme show, Grace in that red/black Diana Lane dress belting out " Nowhere Fast" with the same attitude and posture would be killer, the song has alot of great drumming Matt could blow the lid off. Maybe one of the guys could do "One Bad Stud", with GPNs' talent they could do alot with the movies' soundtrack that was better than the movie.

I just love this band, they are just amazing... incredible. It's great to have a band like Grace Potter and The Nocturnals in our days. Very original, and whit the feeling of great music. I always watch the videos on internet, and I hope as soon as possible go to USA and watch them.
Well, I don't know if it could be the purpose of the band, but I would just love to see them trying some Pink Floyd's songs. Specially !Comfortably Numb!, it would be very interesting to see the band playing this song, and the way Grace would sing. There is another Floyd's song what could be great too... "Have a Cigar", I guess this one is more GPN's style.
Anyway, thank you very much and sorry about my english.

More later as they come to me......wonder if the band will see these suggestions.....and toy with them a bit :-)
love that Zep song and love that Stones album. good choices
my fav Zep tunes change all the time though... right now my two favs are "The Rover" and "Down By The Seaside". but i'm not sure either one would be all the great for a GPN cover...

actually "Seaside" might work --- Grace could cover the electric piano parts, and we've heard thick/choppy tremolo on the guitars before, and slide guitar, etc. and there's a chance to really let loose in the middle jam part... hmm

I would love to hear the nox cover "come on baby let's go downtown" by neil young and crazy horse at irving plaza, given the recent string of neil covers. I'd also like to see them or Blues and Lasers cover NYCH's "LA" with Scott on the lap-steel.

Haven't been here in a while, alot of suggestions beat me out. Have 2 that are more light weight just fun take your mind off your troubles kinds of stuff.
1. Dr Buzzards Original Savanna Band " Sour and Sweet/Lemon in the Honey " good beat needs strong drum work which Matt could do in his sleep, has some horns in it the band would have to to come up with something creative to sub for. A fun song from a good band though short lived.
2. Michelle Branch's " The Game Of Love " from Santanas's Shaman album. She did a good job on a great song but Grace could do it better, and Scott could put a lick'in on Carlos that would be worth the price of admission.
I return again on the eve of seeing the band side splitting watching the clock waiting for tomorrow to come. I'm just keep thinking tomorrow I'm gonna be listening to one of my favorite bands on this earth...
Now on with my slections of today.....love this thread.....I know I keep saying that,
Ahead of the Curve: By Monsters of Folk
You could get the harmonies kicking, plus the slide action in there. It would be very easy for this band to tear this one a new one.
Time to Pretend: By MGMT
I know what your thinking right GPN dives into electronica madness. But seriously the song is good. I'd like to see the band push out of their confort zone, and I think their version would be killer.

This is a great one. I'm A.) suprised that it hasn't been suggested before and B.) a little jel that I didn't pick it. :)
I believe Grace could do it much much better. I don't know if I could stretch so far to say that Scott would out-perform Carlos to such an extent that it could be classified as a "lick'in", but I think he would be more than adequate.

How about "I'm Losin' You" by Rod Stewart and the Faces... Ronnie Woods tasty guitar parts could be easily handled by Scott and Benny...Grace would kill the lead vocal, and there's the acappella-harmony breakdown that would be great for the Nocturnals! Would love to hear Grace play more piano! (Ian MacGlagen, Nickey Hopkins style). Matt has the Kenny Jones thing goin' on already and Cat Popper could lift this tune to the stratosphere!

Not sure I'd buy that version, but might like something along these lines.
I find the Seether version extremely sensual; but, of course, would expect the band to modify it. I also find Chris Botti's music very sensual. Had the opportunity to tell him once, when a friend dragged me to meet & greet after a concert, that this first encounter with his music (CD, not YouTube) sent me on a search for more:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF6jjLAQQxg
But I expect you were referring to Katherine McPhee. :D Don't think that is or should be Grace's style.
Doc Zinger
03-18-2011, 10:29 PM
It would be great if Grace and Chris could do something together in the future, maybe the next time he does a return to the Boston area. He seem to have real enthusiasm and joy for making music and entertaining.
On second thought, maybe he should put both Grace and Katharine on stage together, but that might be too much sensual overload for mere mortals like me, no telling what it might do to Chris actually being on the same stage!
Conserning Katharine McPhee, agree she and Grace have different styles. Seems to me that Katharine has not fulfilled her potential yet, seems to be unfocussed as the what are her strenghts and all over the place trying to find out. Sorta like changing her hair color, thought she looked so much better as a brunette.

I know your saying what's with all the spacey electronica wags, but seriously I think the band could take songs like these and give them the folk/rock treatment and they would be so nice. Have Scott lay down a loop for the synth parts, it would be so sweet.

I may embarrass myself here, but...
"I've Got the Music in Me" a song by The Kiki Dee Band, released in 1974. It was written in 1973 by Bias Boshell, Kiki Dee Band's keyboardist.
The song entered the UK Singles Chart on 7 September 1974, reached number 19 and stayed in the chart for eight weeks.
It's a great uptempo song and Grace will just kill on the vocal delivery!

definately not embarrassing. Grace can pull off anything. My passion as a drummer for 35 years has been great music. Groove and voice are like great whiskey. Sip it slow and it will still kick your ass. GPN is Like the first time I heard Van Halen or Tom Petty or even Rush. Refreshing. I'm a bit off topic here I know. This band is that damn good. Anything Grace sings kills!!

Presence of the Lord. ( Clapton/Winwood ) with Scott singing Eric's part and Grace singing Stevie's part and Benny can do the kick ass guitar parts.
I'm gonna throw this one out there, to spark thoughts
Cold Roses: Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
Great freaking record by the way, I put it out there cause yes Cat is in both bands it shouldn't be strange for GPN to bust out a song that she shreaded on.
Morning Crescent: Belle & Sebastian
I stayed away from this band for years, until someone handed me this song. Its great and of course GPN could slay it.
Blue Orchid: The White Stripes
Would love to hear this done, it would be great its such a raw song to do, I also feel B&L would do this one justice as well

In Philly a few weeks ago, GPN covered Beyonce's "Why Don't You Love Me." It was on fire
Vote which GPN cover is top notch at juleslynne.wordpress.com! If you don't see your favorite, tell me about it!
this Guns song came on the radio last night as i was driving over the bridge. made me think of Grace and her raging rock band the Nocturnals

This song gets my vote!

pretty sure GPN can deliver those ;)
How about

I think it would be killer

It would need some killer instrument solos breaking up the vocals. Which would be Awesome!!! (_8*D Toofar was Just telling The lil Posse party exactly that last night: "Don't usually enter these conversations but ... GPN Would Kill I got The Music in Me!?!?!" They agreed ... But over steak & lobster we were all pretty agreeable! 8*)

Eskimo Blue Day by the Jefferson Airplane
They have already covered White Rabbit and the environmental lyrics and the way the vocals and instrumental part builds on the original to a huge climax would be really suited to the way they play.
Dont' Misunderstand Me by the Rossington Collins Band
That was a hit for them and is a rocker that has that bluesey edge like GPN has anyway with a chance for the female singer (Dale Krantz) to shine plus the guitar players to rock out.

You're No Good-Linda Ronstadt
So Far away-Carole King
Respect-Aretha Franklin
Can't You Hear Me Knockin' or Love in Vain-The Stones. "knockin" would allow the band to stretch their legs is a big and very cool way IMHO, and heck they could call it Can't Ya Hear Me 'Nocin. HEE! :D

I agree that the Stone's "Knocking" would be awesome for the whole band! I'd also love to hear Grace doing Marty Balin's "Coming Back To Me". I would think it could begin with the Hammond and then go to acoustic.

Ten Years Gone: Led Zeppelin
Love that Zep Song... my fav Zep tunes change all the time though... right now my two favs are "The Rover" and "Down By The Seaside". but i'm not sure either one would be all the great for a GPN cover...
Found this GPN Led Zeppelin cover from 12/6/08 while searching for something else:
"Your Time Is Gonna Come" (http://ia600301.us.archive.org/17/items/gpn2008-12-06.km184.flac16/gpn2008-12-06t08_vbr.mp3)

And another LZep song: The Rain Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPgPDRtc2FM)
Happy that my roof is no longer leaking, I can go back to loving rain - this song not really about rain, but very beautiful.

I wholeheartedly agree with each of those. I think GPN could play a fantastic "You're No Good."
I know they've played this one before, but I'd love to see The Who's "Getting in Tune" make a comeback!
Oh and Clapton's "Tell the Truth"!!

Drove home from work just minutes ago and heard a great song that GPN would knock out of the park:
"Foreplay/Long Time" by Boston, from their self-titled first album.
I challenge you to listen to that song and not picture Grace on the B3, Scotty doing all of the electric solos and Benny on the acoustic. It should be this year's "Crazy On You". :D

Wow ... yeah, I can totally see that. She'd have to do something more interesting with the vocals on that song, but I definitely agree on the intrumental side of it. Used to be a big Boston fan back in the day.

Goin' way back, Spirit's I Got A Line On You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bs7qUw3cuYc). And GPN's about the first voice and band I've heard in the last twenty years who could do right by a lot of Lone Justice - Sweet, Sweet Baby;Ways To be Wicked; I Found Love; maybe even Workin' Late or Wait Til We Get Home, just for fun...

Really wish there was a recording of this show. So much fun. Oye Como Va was a blast. The props were hilarious. Such a great night to have my GPN cherry popped.
