Okay, looking forward to a GPN show next Tuesday. Was hoping to catch Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights as an opener. But I didn't get so lucky. Anyway, this is a much needed show for me. I am ready to let lose Joester. Need to dance and hear some good music!! And yes, eat yellow tail tuna. Yummy, can't wait.

a bit more detail from Scottsdale, here goes:
the bar was WAY overcrowded. being so damn cold (for this part of Arizona, in the 30's and down to 29 is about as bad as it gets, we're just not used to it) everyone was inside instead of out on the patio areas, which are pretty spacious. the owner was pretty cool, bought Teri a beer later in the show. we were positioned in the far back left corner, which was maybe 30' from the stage, and had a taper on either side of me, which for that bar, was about the best position we could be in. ends up I had met one of the tapers previously at a JGB show years ago, so I'm hoping to get at least CD's from him. I had some trouble getting the Edirol deck I had borrowed off "hold" at start of Chamberlin, after some fumbling around, finally found the switch on the back of deck. also, seemed I couldn't track between songs like I thought it should work, so I ran some together, and when there was a distinct break in music, stopped recording, and started it up again to start a new file. from the start of GPN, we had these two yonger dudes behind us that were obvioulsy coked up far too much, and just would not shut up, no matter how many dirty looks frm 3 tapers and Teri - just loud-mouthed unconsiderate a-holes, they could plainly see we were taping, and they just babbled non-stop.
I really like Goodbye Kiss, and partway into this song, being it's a bit softer than Joey and Only Love, they sounded louder than ever. I finally lost it, and turned around and sort of politley asked then to STFU. of course, being in the Columbian-powdered "I'm invincible" frame of mind, they got all pissy and in my face (dont you talk to my friend like that, yada yada yada). Teri told this very cool large security dude right near us that she couldn't even hear the music with their chattering, so he stepped and stopped their chatter pronto. got nice and quiet around us for a few tunes after they left our little corner.
music kept getting better - Apologies was nice, crowd started paying attention more and was a bit quieter.
Meantime and Oasis were just great, high energy, and the jam at the end of Oasis was very trippy and strong - Scott and Benny went off! Dana, this would have been your favorite part I think. I hope my recording and the 2 others do it justice. during the jam on Oasis, the taper to my right, texted a message into his phone and showed it to me: "do you any extra AA batteries, I'm down to single bar". I leaned over and mentioned I thought the quick switch to acoustic was coming soon, and I would stop my deck, and pull those AA's and give them to him. sure enough, after a long jam to end Oasis, they stopped and reached for the acoustics. I turned to get some light to see how to remove these batteries (being a borrowed deck, I'm unfamilair with). the same security guy who helped shut up our chatty neighbors, shined his light as I struggled to remove the cover. I looked up at him with an appreciative grin, and he had a big smile on his face as he knew he was really helping us out. Grace mentioned at the start of the mini-set that the first tune was one she thought they originally broke out in Arizona at McDowell Mt Music fest in back in 2007 (will try to verify that somehow) - Ain't no Time. Big White Gate was so different, with Grace singing
between the 2 guitars - very pretty and soulful. too bad the crowd was talking so much, they just didn't appreciate how special it was for some of us.
Grace grabbed her acoustic and they jammed a super version of Treat me Right - so nice to see three acoustic guitars together like that. as they got towards the end of treat, Matt and Cat stepped back on stage (which was pretty tiny), and as they got into the groove, Scott and Benny switched to their electrics, and the jam morphed into Sugar, which really caught me by surprise, and was STRONG! again, with no break, the song melted into NBTW>Medicine.
Grace mentioned at the end of Medicine, that it was time to go, that she didn't make the rules, she just breaks them. sure enough, encore time, and Chamberlin joins GPN on the tiny stage. Grace mentions that they have changed the words, and we would see what she was talking about - sure enough, Arizona. (I believe now it was Idaho, John Ritter song).) Grace went for her white flying V,and we thought we were going to hear White rabbit, but so much static and noise, they gave up and went into paris to end the show.
all in all, great to see GPN,and really enjoyed Chamberlin too, will buy their CD in March. as to the venue - far too small for GPN in 2011 - they need to move to the Marquee tht in tempe, which holds 1000 or so next time they come thru tow.
so - we'll hope Adam ended up with a strong recording, and posts it up on archive soon as he said he would.

Thanks so much Joester. You really are the best. The whole time I was reading your highlights, I felt closterphobic. SO wished I would have been with you and Teri for the yellowtail party. SIgh. I am going to miss you guys.

not sure when we'll be able to see GPN again, but I'll keep following here and
on TIS.
in 15 days we'll be back on the beach in Mexico for 3 nights, just under 5 hour drive south in our rv, hoping it warms up by then!
Noc and roll!

Joe, nice review! Isn't it interesting that you have some of the same AH's that we have in Seattle, do they travel around following the band or are they just different people of the like kind?

One has to wonder why people carry on the most inane coversations while people are trying to hear the show, why the hell did they come anyway! Maybe they don't realize others didn't pay good money to hear their conversation, da! And then they're too stupid to STFU when someone takes offense. Don't get me started on the ones that have to make a beer run, pushing and bullin their way through eveyone with 3-4 beer cups every 8-12 mins, G give me strength.

Also agree it will be great when GPN the next time through will be playing in bigger venues.

Wally,
we love Puerto Penasco, Sonora. it's just under a 5 hour drive in our rv, and that includes the mandatory stop at the duty-free store at the border.
$21/nt RV park w/full hookups, on the beach.
here's a trip we took to Bird Island over Thanksgiving, dolphin stampede. you can hear Teri and some others pretty excited.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_mocpxV6qY
Dana - we look forward to your show review from KC :)

Hi everyone,

I was at the AZ show and have been checking Archive for a recording of the show periodically ever since. Now I've stumbled on to this old thread mentioning that recordings were made, did any of them surface somewhere?

Thanks!
Travis

I haven't seen any for the Feb 2, 2011 show. Not on LMA, not on eTree, not on DIME.

I've been away from the Posse too long.... and GPN. as to recordings, it's ever so evident to me now to NEVER, EVER, go to a show w/out extra batteries. I would have had the entire show recorded, and if I may say so, a reasonably listenable recording considering the noisy venue. I have the first six songs thru Oasis, and that's it. ltravis - send me a pm with your mail addy and I'll send you a cd of those 6 anyhow, not a problem.
note to tapers: if someone is nice enough to give you THEIR batteries from their deck - you could at least call that person who also gave you their business card.....I'm just sayin.....
