View Full Version : Moving threads from old forum

Since Nate has announced plans to shut down the old Yuku/Fancorps forums perhaps we should create a strategy for moving old - valuable threads over here.
I for one would hate to see all of Van's original reviews/thoughts go missing. Perhaps one thread per show review? One thread of all Van's reviews?
Sadly, that's a copy/paste effort but one that I think is worthwhile. Volunteers? Thoughts?

I agree that it's worthwhile, and would volunteer to help with the effort - Van's our unofficial historian and I personally think his wonderful descriptive reviews should be an accessible archive for fans both new and old to refer too and to share in this Crazy Parade of history with this band.

I would be up to copy/paste a few nights of my life away for this effort. I too think it'd be a worthwhile and definitely time well spent. Just let me know what you'd like me to do!

Here's what I would do
- Use the "Shows Discussion" forum
- Use the Show Archive page for reference : http://www.gracepotter.com/shows/show-archive/
- You'll want some consistency so create a thread that has the title "DD/MM/YY - The Venue - The City"
- Copy/Paste at will
- The real question is, who does what? I would reference Van's posts over on the old Yuku forum to find what to post. http://gracepotterandthenocturnalsforum.yuku.com/forums/65
- I would solicit volunteers for Month/Year so ask the question - who wants to volunteer for Jan/Feb/Mar 2009 for example
- Lather/Rinse/Repeat
- Of course, someone who isn't me needs to organize the volunteers

KC, do you still want set lists moved to the setlist.fm site ?
I made an excel list of the GPN shows archive when started adding to that site quite a while ago and it does help a lot. Have some free time this week and was going to get back to adding the other shows I can find on the fancorps, yuku and archive.org sites.
Should I still go ahead with that project ?

toofarnorth -
you should definitly continue your work on (what should it be called: NocturnalBase?) -
Van's show reports are tremendous re-caps of each (the drive, sights, dining, backstage and streetside moments) and every effort to preserve those should be made - and maybe added to the setlist whenever possible - maybe a hotlink?
pictures, photos of setlists, etc could also maybe be linked in the future to each show - I know that makes the database that much larger, just thinking of what would be fun and interesting to be able go back and re-visit.
yes - please save it all, somehow, someway.... :)

I still think that is a fantastic idea. Hopefully, we can incorporate links to Setlists on the GP.com Show Archive page

Hopefully, we can incorporate links to Setlists on the GP.com Show Archive page
We can put cross reference links on setlist.fm too . . . already do that when the show is on archive.org.
Links to here can be added later as a comment or added on the setlist ' page' as an info edit.

K C seems to have given us good instructions on how to go about this - and let us know that the methodical approach will work best.
I'm all for making this happen and will be able to put in time next week to do so. As KC stated we need organization to get this done right and with many hands we can make the work light. We've already got volunteers so now the thing is to set up the organization of this project.
I'm not able to do much intensive work until monday due to family committments - but how bout we start off with this - so far I see that Wally, Mallory, Too Far North and myself are the volunteers so far - if I missed someone - get right back here and let us know! My thought is following KC's advice in that we should designate each volunteer to a portion - so - current volunteers, and those that might want to volunteer for this one - would you consider confirming back here in this post that you'd like help in this effort and then we shall have to figure out a methodology for assignments - input please - this is a great way to make a fun group effort to preserve some of the cool history that many of us have been of part, while we move on into the future ! Date ranges based on the number of volunteers makes the most sense to me - but - please anyone else with an idea jump right in . . .

Snowbird . .
the GPN shows archive is broken up into Tours now . . i.e. Tour: Winter 2006, Tour: Summer 2007 , etc.
Maybe those designations would be a good way to title the threads ? . . as well as divide the work ?
For example:
Person A starts a thread for "Tour: Winter 2006 " with the first post showing a basic list of all those shows ( date, venue, city, state ).
Then hunts for recaps, set lists, etc, for each show and adds that info as replies to the thread . . keeping things in chronological order as much as possible.
Just a thought . . dissect at will :D
( btw . . big thank you to whoever did the tours breakdowns - had been guessing when entered info on setlist.fm before . . will check for any needed corrections )
malloryf

toofarnorth, i think that's an excellent idea to divide up the work and to title by tour.
Snowbird
06-02-2010, 04:48 PM
Excellent - we have a starting point - using the Tour break points to divide the work sounds perfect - it's still to onice outside to write up assignments - but that sounds like the next step - and I'd be willing to do that later after the sun goes down, unless anyone else wants to jump in before them.
so - this is my thought how about setting up a work sign up sheet based on the Tour breaks - once done - a member can sign up for it and when complete can report back to have that assignment checked off the list - KC - can this be a sticky once we get it set - or is there a better way to keep the post on assignment and completion up front rather than buried in the thread?

I'm leaving in the AM and will be away until sometime Sunday . . it's not a music related trip so it sort of slipped my mind - oy !

Please take a look at the archive thread - I've gone ahead and copied from the show archives the tour list as it reads for 2005 and used that as the start of the thread. I then added in what I believe is Van's first review from the old forum which is December 30th, 2005 as a reply.
Is this how we want to proceed - please take a look and give some feedback before we go ahead and assign 2006 - 2010 to bring us up to date.

Snowbird . . . you're making me feel guilty - lol . . I am home again but I'm being selfish and watching Levon Helm & friends set at Mountain Jam on iClips site instead of working =]
I'm wondering if putting all the Tours' details for one year in one thread will make it so long that it will be sluggish for some people to open ?
Sadly there are still some folks stuck on dial-up because of where they live. Maybe break the years into separate threads - one for each leg, Spring, Summer, etc ?
Just a thought . . KCortez will know if it's a valid concern for this site or not.

I've been working on the moving threads today - All of 2005 is one thread as there is only one official Van review that I could pull from the old foum. I'm now onto 2006 and will break it down into seasonal tours as they appear in THIS forums show archives. I'm happy to continue on and finish 2006 and will post here when I'm done - if someone wants to volunteer and pick up for 2007 - please chime in here. Would probably be best to wait til I've finished 2006 to keep the threads clean and in order I'm thinking, but I could be wrong - comments and suggestions always welcome!

If you edit the post, it should give you the option to delete with a button in the lower right corner of the post box.
malloryf
06-11-2010, 12:56 PM
I tried that method, but the delete button is not showing up - perhaps because I started that thread? I see the 'delete' button when I click on edit on a post that I make within a thread, but not on ones that I started. What do you think I should do? Just use that thread, or start a new one and disregard that empty one (and try to get an admin to delete it?)
Snowbird
06-11-2010, 01:29 PM
I see what you mean, I had thought that i deleted my first post and started over, but now can't see to figure out how i did it - perhaps that function was shut off to avoid losing achived stuff. I think I would edit the post and remove the content so it's blank and send a put a request in the Q&A for an admin to delete that empty thread and start up a new one.
I'm hoping that will keep everything in chronological order, when we are all done, then I think we need to ask to have the threads locked, so that addtional posts aren't added as that would probably put them out of order again? Not sure at all about this - anyone else have ideas????
let me know when you are done with a thread (via PM please not posting) and i'll close it

Re: Fancorps site
I'm basically done with moving the set lists from the Fancorps site to setlist.fm.
The Set List Drop Off area has been done and double checked. Also did searches for strays. The search feature isn't very good - can't get it to retrieve all the pages it says it finds. But it did find a show in Gig Discussions forum that wasn't in the Set List Drop Off area so I am still looking through those Gig pages manually in case there are more hidden treasures.
************************************************** **************************
Jan & Mallory
couple of things
- I did see a some show recaps in the set list drop off area and in the Gig forum. Don't know if they were duplicated on the Yuku site.
Was so focused on hunting for set lists I didn't think to grab them . . or at least a link . . very sorry !. Will post links here if find any others in the rest of my ramble.
- are you copying and pasting all set list information you find on Yuku into the threads here ?
If you are, I'll work on setlist.fm from here instead of that site.
Thank you both for preserving the GPN history . . . http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/AH-ls/Quick%20use/flower.gif or maybe http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff228/AH-ls/Quick%20use/sud-mug-beer.gif for Mallory :)

Mallory and I were working on capturing our legendary historian's and original road warrior reviews and I believe we are now finished as well. I did take the liberty of adding in a few others that I felt should be saved for historical purposes. When KC proposed this, my understanding was that we'd be saving the literary gems, venue and local history that Van so awesomely provided in his reviews over the many years he has followed our favorite band. To that end we searched the site for posts under Van's screen name. To date, we've got all his show reviews, plus a few extras from a few other authors in there. There will be some authors that were missed based on our search criteria and I do apologize now if someone feels left out, it was not intentional, our mission as I understood it was to capture and preserve Van the Man's reviews for posterity! Set lists were not a priority, once again based on our search criteria, however Van almost always provides a set list.
Thank you for all you've done TFN - I give you credit for working in the setlist.fm website - it gave me no end of frustration when I tried to add in data a while back. Hopefully it improved!

Snowbird , opps. . . I jumped to a conclusion I guess.
I knew you were bringing all of Van's ( our GPN Historian ) wonderful show recaps and travelogues over to preserve them.
But when I skimmed the archives here, I happened to land on a place with those other posts you mention, so wondered if the set lists had been brought over too.
No problem, Yuku search is pretty good I'll run a check of what that produces against my list for anything I don't already have. Hopefully it won't take me too long.
As to setlist.fm . . some things are working better but still has its quirks at times. It insisted on showing me as being at every show I entered one night . . wish I had been - LOL ! I fixed some as edits but was taking too long so will catch the rest when go back through and enter the Tour names. We weren't sure how to break those down at first, but would be nice to have them consistent since can search that way. .Putting the pieces of the puzzles together has been a bit of a challenge sometimes though . . I actually like doing that kind of thing but am feeling a time crunch to get things off the sites. =[
ETA: Just so you know . . . Nate has put quite a few 2009 shows up himself and done some editing to make song names consistent. Not gonna say how I found out, just that I'm always happy to give someone a chuckle. :o

Yuku's keyword(s) search didn't seem to cover the 'archive' section. Always meant to check out that area so now I have ! Found a enough setlists that hadn't shown up before to be well worth the time . . of course it would have taken a lot less time finding the setlists if I had been able to resist reading all the other bits that caught my eye. :D
Am about 98% certain I found all there was to find on Yuku, but I'll poke around some more until the site goes down.
Am going to review the entries, but if you see something you think needs correcting please let me know.
Had to do some puzzle piecing and occasionally a little guessing ... I'm more than happy to make adjustments if someone has better info.
Will be checking archive.org for entries for setlist.fm next.
