Nashville gets Nothing but the Water

By Butch Worrell
Nasheville, TN

As Nashville and especially the music business strives to overcome the devastion wrought by the recent flood, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals arrivied with a precious gift, a musical energy to bolster Nashville's soul. Broadcast live by Nashville's cool Radio 100, those that couldn't attend the sold out show could still listen in. 3rd and lindsey (a venue where local muscians go to hang out) was packed with apprecitive fans when Grace and the band hit the stage.

My first time live with Grace hooked me from the get-go, and I won't try to compare her with anyone else, because Grace is quite frankly, beyond comparisons. Powerfull, souful vocals, super hot keyboard licks (I'm a sucker for a B3 anyway), jamming on the Flying V Gibson, she can do it all. If all that isn't enough, her combination of the girl next door looks that you love madly, with a sexy vamp that you can't help lusting for just a little, is simply awesome. Singing her heart out, dancing wildly, losing herself in the music, she commands the stage.

Then there is the Nocturnals. Scott Tournet is one hell of a guiter player whose aggresive style does so much lead the band. I especially loved his slide guiter work and his harmonica playing. The drummer Matt Burr drives the band with his intense beat. And the other beautful lady, bassist Catherine Popper, not only plays a mean bass but adds a beautful texture to the vocal harmonies. Finally the rythem guiter player, Benny Yurco, jams in his own way, both with Scott's lead and Catherine's bass.

As the radio show came to a close the crowd called out for the "Water", Gracie delivered with a powerful demonstration of her vocal talents:

"nothing but the water is gonna bring my soul to bare,
but now nothing but the water is gonna bring my soul to bare"

and the Nashville crowd responded with cheers and felt renewed as though they had been to an old time revival and found salvation. Thank you Grace, Catherine, Scott, Matt, and Benny, we needed that.
