    When the Three Sevens Clash
    7/7/07
    The Chicken Box
    Nantucket

Numerologists, gypsies, card readers, psychics and fortune tellers can debate the significance of the date. On Nantucket, the tourist crowds overrun the island as if someone had kicked open an anthill. Combined with the end of the holiday week and the manic energy of a Saturday night, the stage was set for a night of musical fireworks.
With the benevolent spirit of the late Joseph Hill of Culture smiling down from above, Joseph, who sang a different prophecy of the year 1977 in the classic reggae anthem When the Two Sevens Clash on many a memorable sweaty summer night from the stage of Nantuckets premier dance hall, the Chicken Box welcomed back Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.
After a forgettable thirty minute set from the Brightwings, the water and towels all in place, and a few cold Budweiser longnecks opened and waiting for Mr. Shakey, the band slipped in the door and took the stage with no more than a demure hello from Grace. Everyone was wearing well, jeans and a T-shirt, except Brian who sported a snappy western-style button down to go with his boots and sailors cap. Matts shirt pictured the hypnotist, an allusion perhaps to the musical spell about to be cast on the assembly. His black hat and oversized white shades hid the gleam in his eye as he pounded out his introduction to Mastermind. Scott wore the good guys white hat and a black T with pictures of guitars and automatic weapons on the front. Grace, looking more glamorous after spending most of the winter in southern California, wore jeans, a black vest and a key-lime T which proclaimed keep with someone you trust.
Mastermind got em dancing from the start and as it ended they segued into a spacey instrumental introduction to Treat Me Right. Scott worked a blazing lead on slide and finished with a flourish, fanning his guitar. Treat is much different than it was a year ago or even on Nothing But the Water. But, it delivers a solid punch and remains my favorite song of theirs. Mr. Columbus was next as the band gathered momentum, the audience really jumping by now. As it ended, I gave up my spot front row center and headed for a cold beer. Joey was next, not my favorite.
This song is the first single from our new album, said Grace to introduce Ah, Mary, as the brown and white flying V made an appearance. Shes the beat of my heart
After a breath of fresh air and some liquid refreshment, I slid back down front as Grace asked Are you ready to get a little bit nasty? and began Stop the Bus on the keyboards. She then introduced Scott Tournet on guitar and grabbed her Gibson for a guitar duo. Her rhythm work gave him the space to explore with his lead, churning out fresh licks and banging the guitar on his monitor.
Who Knows came out of nowhere. Grace took the microphone and fronted the power trio, strutting and stepping, savoring the sassy lyrics of the Band of Gypsies classic and trading vocal chops with Scotts searing soulful lead.
They keep the energy at a fever pitch with If I Was From Paris. Ill give her artistic license on the title, without digressing on the use of the subjunctive mood in English. But, it rocked start to finish.
Next up was Watching You, another brand new tune that I hadnt heard yet. This is an original, but it captures that same classic rock feeling that really defines the Nocturnals. Grace played slide on the brown flying V, while Scott got wild with his reverb and feedback, banging his axe against anything he could find, the micstand, his monitor, the proscenium. (I never knew there were two flying Vs, and Grace told me later that theyre getting a third!)
As everyone caught their breath, Grace serenaded us with Nothing But the Water, slow and cool. So, I took another break for oxygen and last call. No part 2 of Water, instead a groovy percussion jam into Come Together that got everyone singing along. Not quite as rousing as Bob Weirs version to 80,000 of the faithful at Bonnaroo last month, but its another classic rock icon that the band does great justice.
After the obligatory thank you and goodnight, a quick trip out the door and back in, Grace asked How about a little Neil Young? to introduce the encore, Farmer John. Cortez the Killer and Big White Gate were also on the list, but were cut due to closing time.
Tomorrow, she said, Sunday, the Lords day, right back here at the Chicken Box, and theyre off.
As Joseph would have said, What a living bomba yea, when the three sevens clash!

    Mastermind
    Treat Me Right
    Mr. Columbus
    Joey
    Ah, Mary
    Stop the Bus
    Who Knows
    If I Was From Paris
    Watching You
    Nothing But the Water I
    Come Together
    Farmer John

Teadhead, Ill trust you to review Sunday. See yall again in Sandwich.

When 8 realizes he is a day late..

First thing Scott says to me is: "You missed a pretty good show last night"

First thing oneaway says to me is: "You missed a great show last night"

I was busy looking for Ninja 7's dukin' it out...to no avail.

And let me tell you, I was glad I realized that I had lost my car keys at 7:30 Monday morning, not 7:30 Sunday night...it would have altered my mood considerably...

I had a great night in Nantucket...home of the "cute as a button" 2 BR cottages listing for $1.3 mill....a relaxing meal on Main Street with friends...a rocking night at the Box...and a weird as hell afterparty, in a darkened fine cuisine restaurant, that one away man aptly described as "manhattan meets nantucket...all attitude"....all I can say is when the bartender has a crazed look in his eye, throws bottles into the well, starts break dancin' in a dance-off with a sun glasses wearing techno dancer...well, it's time for ole tedheadone to slip out the back, Jack. Which is exactly what I did at 3:15 in the morning and walked back to the bed in the little cottage that the Nantucket Accomodations Angel had scored for me..

The band took the stage as I was happily helping Jen, Aya, and Jody at the merch table prep some of the new single CD's for the band to sign. P.S., be sure to get to the site and pre-order the CD- autographed and only 8.99 for the pre-order .....wow www.gracepotter.com/
hurry before writer's cramp disappoints you

We worked at fever pitch for the first couple songs and definitely the only time I have ever stood with my back to a band...turns out I wasn't the only one. I spent most of the night at the end of the table keeping an eye on a menacing looking guy that was standing back to the crowd. He seemed to be very drunk and mouthing off to people facing the stage near him. I decided to keep myself between Jen, Aya, and Jody, and this guy just in case...I'm not sure they even noticed him, and they probably could have slapped him into next week, but...he looked like he might blow at any minute.

Only at the end could I weasel down to the front to experience the amazing bouncing floor and more amazing guitar work on encore "Cortez".

    Highlights:
Scott was screamin' on Cortez and I'm sure Jimi was proud of his take on "Who Knows". If you have forgotten (or never knew this song) use your speakers, high speed connection, and this 1970 Fillmore show to remember.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1UMqsTTnkE
Grace, per usual sounded great, especially on "Watchin you "and "Paris" which, by the way, has turned into a nice little sing along...Ooh LA LA !! She wore a halter top that she pulled out of a tiny shopping bag from an Island store. A suit vest brought some modesty to it....perhaps. The guys wore, well, jeans and a tee shirt.

Matt anchored the four way drum solo on NBTW, Scott and Bryan working the floor tom, and Grace on the bass for a long, old fashioned "rythmn session"

Bryan and Grace closing out "Cortez"...Bryan facing the amp, and Grace kneeling with a handheld mic for some feedback, taking swigs of Sutters Home wine from a mini bottle, leaning her head back, and spraying it in the air...four times...Bryan wearing it. From where I stood it was caught perfectly in the light...

And the set was over...band exiting out the side door to the green room out back, where a few fans were able to gather and say hello.

Grace departed on the back of a minibike, Matt at the controls....off to a weird little after party...

And after 4 hours sleep, I'm off, keyless, to the ferry. And I think I'm having a bad day....poor Senator John Kerry must be prevented from flying by the fog, and is next to me in the line to get on the boat...where I later discover Aya, who is thinking positive thoughts that i just left my keys in the car door...but no....a rental car is needed for the 240 mile roundtrip to get a spare key....my long day is finally over when I arrive home for good at 8:30, 13 hours after I left my room on the Island, dropping $112 on rental and gas

    set list

    Mr Columbus
    Bus
    Master Mind
    Treat
    Joey
    Ah, Mary
    Meantime
    Who Knows
(OK, I kinda blew it here, didn't write them down, I was distracted by drunk, backwards guy...but I'm sure they play...

Great show! They played in the Sandwich High Auditorium tonight. There were about 300 people there, at most.

I'm a recent convert, so only my 2nd time seeing them. Definitely a little more tame than the wild Chicken Box show I saw a couple of weeks ago, but that was largely due to the setting, I'm sure.

Grace looked awesome, in a micro-mini skirt. She was much more conversational than at the Box, spent a fair amount of time rapping between songs -- what a doll!

Scott smoked on guitar. Set list as I recall it (apologies if I mis-name any of the songs -- I'm a new fan...):

    Mastermind
    Treat Her Right
    Stop the Bus
    Ah Mary
    Ain't No Time
    Big White Gates
    You May See Me
    Lose Some Time
    Falling or Flying
    In the Meantime
    If I Was From Paris

plus encore (sorry, don't know the name of that song, but it rocked!)

You may be a new fan but you sure got the setlist/song names down, almost perfectly! Love that you said "apologies" to us out here - that is one of the older songs by the band but it's on the new album!

Saw this show last night--the only disappointment was that it was inside...

First show for me, and definitely not the last--what an amazing band!! Grace was awesome, and the band, especially the lead guitarist, blew me away.

Thanks GPN for my first time!

Okay. There is an elephant in the room. We have to talk. Avoiding it will do us no good, no good whatsoever. I've tried, I've tiptoed, I've pussyfooted around.

The boys' got game; Grace got gams. There. I said it. Step One is admitting. I know this is not shock to anyone that has been to a few live shows. Gams to go with her game.

Before the Waterville Valley show this Spring, Grace and Bryan were kinda rough housing and Bryan gave Grace a whack on the thigh with a big serving spoon. Grace reacted with mock indignation, "Hey, watch out for my Easter legs"
Looking at her quizically, she said " Yea, tomorrow's Easter, I'm wearing a short skirt, and I don't want any bruises. We Potter girls got great legs"

    Amen, brother.

Easter Legs. I still chuckle at that one. And tonight Grace was wearing a micro dress, wicked short, belted, silver grey. And there was simply no way of avoiding those legs tonight. They went, basically, from floor to neck. I would be, I daresay, remiss in my mission to you if I hadn't pointed out that it's an outfit like this that could end up in a magazine layout.......Ahem.

The boys were wearing, well, jeans and a t-shirt. Actually, Bryan went with a blue button shirt, and Matt had the verticlal stripe thing goin', his hatband on his fedora echoing his shirt.

There were a lot more folks there then I expected. Nice to see One Away Man, with some great pics, first thing as I walked in..When Matt heard it was moved to the High school, his reaction was "Oh, no, a GYM!" But it was a very reasonable and large auditorium, using only the lower area. Mark was concerned about the minimal PA system, but I think it worked out pretty well. Gave Grace a chance to do a little riff on high school, but also it ended up not real loud as well. Grace was in fine voice, rested, and she sounded perhaps the best I have heard her sing "Ah, Mary"..

I had a little crowd concern, looking around before the show as I caught up with Jen's mom Betsy and friend Stephanie.
This was how it was on the venue site:

"Grace Potter & the Nocturnals conjure up a nostalgic sound reminiscent of '60's and '70's vinyl"

Knowing the Cape and the summer crowd and an outdoor concert venue with this kind of blurb, there are people there half expecting, like, Freddie and The Dreamers and Hermans Hermits. They were there, and I saw perhaps 3 couples exit early on.

The band got a very nice intro from a DJ from the Martha's Vineyard station MVY. Great station, check it out here sometime www.mvyradio.com/

Opener tonight was "MasterMind", with a nice, building, open. Easing right into another building open for "Treat me Right"..which caused 2 girls down front to get up and go back to the soundboard area to dance. Scott was featured in the Bus open and then right on to "Ah, Mary".

Grace spoke at length about "Big White Gate" and her grandmother before easing into the song. After this, the boys left the stage and Grace tackled "You May see Me" solo acoustic. I'm trying to remember if we have seen her solo acoustic before, but don't think so..

And if you wish to hear a simply gorgeous acoustic song by Grace, go hear with your broadband and speakers and click on the listen icon for "No Expectations". We have heard this song several times but I don't think ever acoustic.

    Caution:goosebump alert!!

    www.mvyradio.com/archives/index.php#G

Next up was "Lose Some Time". Grace stood with acoustic, Matt had the squeezbox at the keyboard mics, Bryan seated with mandolin, Scott seated with lap slide guitar.

"If I was from Paris" closed, and Grace smartly got the crowd standing before the end of the song singing along.

And then, an old friend popped up for the encore. "Over Again" was a joy to hear, sounded great, Scott and Bryan rocked it, Grace joined in on guitar. Funny end, Scott had to turn back by Bryan and Matt to tie it back up and close it, as they both just had their heads down, goin at it.

Steph turned to me and noted she hadn't heard this for awhile. I thought about it, and I hadn't heard it in 2007. Afterwards, Matt said, he thought they had played it at Wakarusa this year.

So great to hear it, love to hear old favorites. They absolutely smoked it.

A good night on the Cape.

Seen in the crowd: Lauren C., childhood friend of Susan Tedeschi. Gave her a CD last November at the Tedeschi/ Derek Trucks show at Berklee, and she came with husband Jeff for their first time show. Loved it !!

Funny thing on the way home. 'BOS, station that did Earthfest, said they had a song by GPN coming up. I called the DJ, told him the upcoming TV performances and he said "You're preachin' to the choir. I love them, got your song on next." Then i turned the radio back on, and a few seconds later I heard MY voice talking.....he taped our conversation and played it as the intro...freaked me out! So call your station and request the song when you get a chance

    Set list:

    MasterMind
    Treat Me right
    Stop The Bus
    Ah, Mary
    Ain't No time
    Big white gate
You May see Me Solo acoustic
    Lose Some Time Seated
    Falling or Flying

Good stuff Teadhead and right on!

Friday, July 20th is Harry Potter Day in Sandwich, but on Wednesday night there was a different sorceress named Potter casting her enchantment on the townsfolk.

As you said, the boys wore jeans and T-shirts and Grace wore well...not much. She looked breathtaking in her minidress.

Mastermind seems to be the opener of choice lately and Scott was flexing his muscles early as he wow-wowed the audience while Matt's pulsing drumbeat got the evening rolling.

The dependable Treat Me Right, my favorite, was next. I'd be happy if they played it every night. Scott broke out his harmonica for the introduction to Stop the Bus as the band hit cruising altitude.

Grace was very chatty all night, perhaps inspired by the intimate setting. Here, she regaled us with a tale of her educational history, replete with the details of befriending her high school principle. Having coffee with the principle evidently kept her out of trouble.

To this Scott muttered "loser" under his breath.

"Don't call me a loser", she quipped. "I was an overdeveloped 16 year old."

Ah Mary followed this repartee and then a soulfully sweet Ain't No Time.

She prefaced Big White Gate with a long tale of her late grandmother, punctuated with the caveat "I've been known to speak in tongues".

For the first time that I've ever seen and Teadhead concurred, the guys left the stage and she played You May See Me solo, on acoustic guitar. I love the line "Don't come looking. 'Cause if you look too hard, I just might look away."

The boys returned and delivered a delicious Lose Some Time, another favorite of mine. Falling or Flying was next, with a passing reference to Grey's Anatomy. Claiming that none of them had cable or even watched TV, Grace tried to embrace the benefits of television in light of their upcoming appearances on national TV.

A swinging Here's To the Meantime followed and as it concluded Grace asked "Are there any fisherman in here, fisherwomen?" When no one responded, she joked "Does anyone eat fish?" Then the brown flying-V came out for a rocking If I Was From Paris to end the set.

I had asked Brian about Over Again last weekend and he said they weren't playing it much lately. So, much to my suprise they encored with a smoking rendition of it and left the crowd on their feet applauding.

I was fortunate afterwards to get into the green room, where Grace graciously signed some pictures from the Chicken Box.
I left her with a copy of the moped shot of her and Matt which I hope will appear soon at a website near you.

Unfortunately, I've had to sell my tickets to Newport and Waterfront Park due to that dreaded four-letter word "work".
So, I'll hold out for Bank of America Pavillion in Boston on September 7th and those national TV performances in August.

I seriously looked at going to this....

So many bands I would want to see in one place: Kings of Leon, Jarvis Cocker, John Butler Trio, G. Love, Ocean Colour Scene, Lily Allen, Mumm-ra, Damien Rice, and of course GPTN.

    If only I spoke japanese.

(The hell with the red carpet premiere...Homer decides to follow his favorite band to Fuji...let him tell you)

Boarding the plane at Logan airport, I'm walking down the aisle when I spy GPN spread out across a row of the plane...Matt and Scott on the aisle seats. They smile, and reach out for a high five. Since my hands are full with a jumbo wheat grass slushie and a bag of Dunkin Donuts..mmmm, donuts..I can't give them a high three...but I can offer my bag of donuts.

In what can only be described as a scene out of a Three stooges movie, the bag gets ripped, donuts fly out, and every one grabs one. Grace seems particularly pleased by the blueberry glazed. Bryan says "AWRIGHT, I wanted a chocolate glazed, but Jen said we didn't have enough time"...and as karma goes, vegetarian Jen gets the carrot cake muffin.

One donut is missing...D'OH....Grace notices that it landed in her lap...She looks at it....she looks at me...she looks back at the donut...and then looks at me with her eyebrows raised as if to dare me to get it..and then Matt, ever the gentleman, retrieves it and hands it to me.....

just in time, cuz the people behind me are starting to shove!

The flight to Chicago is quick...when they played the trailer for my new movie during the in-flight , I pulled my cap down over my head so no one would recognize me. Stupid people!

As we get ready to transfer to the 747 for the trip over the North Pole, I realize I've only had one stinkin' donut, I better stock up.

Man, can this trip get ANY longer? I shoulda just kept diggin that hole to China and jumped in. China is next to Japan, isn't it??

I pass the time on the flight screaming, crying, kicking the back of the seat in front of me, making faces at the people in the row behind me, and running up and down the aisle...I wonder how long it would have taken me to fall through that hole...had to be quicker then this....stupid airplane.

Looking out the teeny, tiny window I see..water, water, water, boat, water, water, water, whales, water, water, boat, water, water, water, LAND! wow, and look at all those buildings...I think this Tokyo place is even bigger then Springfield...wow, those are big buildings...hey, what's that funny noise??...ohhh, I'm scared...we're gonna crash!!...Oh, Miss Stewardess? Where do I put my head? THERE????..I can't bend over that far!...OH, just the landing gear? heh, heh, oh I knew that..just testing you..

Whew, we're down, I'm safe. .let's go. Excuse me, heads up, comin' through, gotta go, LEMME OFF THIS THING!!

As I follow the band off the jetway ramp, AYA is there to greet us...er, them. She welcomes us...er, them, warmly to her birthland. And though she asks me if I need a place to stay, I can see GPN giving her short little shakes of their heads, and Scott says something like "IX-nay on the ace-play to ay-stay" I didn't know he knew Japanese!

Aya does offer me a ride later to the ski area in Niigata where the festival is. And as we drive through the city I look at everyone and feel strangely at home. These are my people..I can see it in their faces......I can see it in their complexion!! I am HOMER-san !! Now I know what Richard Pryor felt when he went to Africa!!

As we get closer to the festival, there are people walking along, it's like Woodstock East ! we are allowed to drive all the way in until we finally arrive...

Wow, it's beautiful...a ski area on MT Fuji...7 stages, even a "dragondola" to the summit. We're runnin' late..stupid traffic...and we head to the Filed of Heaven...Wait..DID I DIE?
look at all the pretty candles..

    www.fujirockfestival.com/history/photos.asp

We are heading right to the backstage gate. HEE,HEE I'm gonna slip right in with the band..I'm headin right for the food table...better have donuts, not just sushi...Hey, I wonder if they called up their neighbor and had them ship some Chinese food..Mmmmm, little red spare ribs..

"What, whaddya mean where's my back stage pass? I'm with them...hey, where'd they go..wait, I AM HOMER-san! Hey, you don't have to be such a grouch....Oww, that hurts, okay, okay, i'm leaving"

Poor me, I wish Marge was here....wow, that is a pretty mountain stream

    www.fujirockfestival.com/history/photos.asp

I think I need to wash off this road dust, and get me ready for a little dancin with GPN !

Sorry officer, I forgot my bathing suit...

NO, I AM NOT THE UGLY AMERICAN...that would be Larry King.

Wow, that was refreshing.. but look at the crowd, it's gonna take some work to get down front so I can boogie my ass off. Here we go, gotta be careful

Hah, hah..stupid concert people..are you all stoned?..let me down front so easy. hah

Okay, everybody! WE WANT GRACE, THIS THE TIME AND PLACE !!
WE WANT NOCTURNALS, OR WE"LL ALL GO INFERNAL!!

PLAY THAT SONG ABOUT THAT MARY CHICK!! WE WANT MARY!! Woo Hoo !!

Sweet! Here comes "Treat Me Right" I am gonna SHAKE IT!!

Hey, whaddya mean "Down in Front"? I am HOMER-san ! Down in Front THIS!!

Oh what a set!! ENCORE, ENCORE!! woo HOO
    PLAY "Over Again"!!
    PLAY "Arms Length"
    PLAY "Watchin' YOU"
PLAY "Left Behind" Ohh, where's Marge
    PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPRETTYPLEASE...
    PLAY "Come Together" MARGE!!

Whew, fantastic...still got some energy...I think I'll float over to another stage and see my buds The Ramones. How much trouble can I get into??

Well, this was a pretty good trip...I better get home to Springfield VERMONT and see how my movies is doin'....

If I can just find that hole, I'll jump into it and fall back up to America! AHMARYICA!!

The over all recording is far greater than the first two CD's. The band has come along way. Grace's vocals are great. Scott Butterfield Tournet's harp on Stop The Bus is cool, his slide is getting better, and guitar work is top notch. Brain's bass is right there. Matt's drums keep it all together. Recording engineer deserves some credit too. Having heard most of the songs played live I am quite impressed. This CD should put the band over the top which makes me happy and sad at the same time.

like Grace states in one the many recent interviews - a few listens are necessary - the lyrics/sounds/rhythms simply grow on you.

I got my pre-ordered copy today from Newberry Comics. I was glad to find that it included an additional copy of the liner notes signed by the entire band seperate from the one with the CD. Hopefully I can buy the extra tracks off of itunes but often they make them only available if you purchase the whole album. As much as I love the band, I'm not buying two copies of the album.
Going through my first listen as I type this, I have to agree that the production quality is fantastic. Maybe there's at least one benefit of being on a big, evil major record label.

A perfect summer day in New England. Sparkly blue sky, sparkly Newport harbor with yacht masts rocking back and forth, 80 degrees and low humidity. Too bad that was Sunday of the Newport Folk Festival, not the Saturday edition GPN played that was pressing 90 degrees with a relative humidity of 70.

I don't want to get too graphic, but if Matt and Grace can talk about "swamp butt", well, so can I...And quite frankly, and mercifully, that's all I want to say on the subject.

Except that it was so damn hot that I got there at 8:55 AM, left at 8:30 PM, AND I NEVER SAT DOWN. I was afraid my low beach chair would stick to me and I would have swamp AND beachchair butt IF i could ever stand back up.

Wally was first in line, and good thing, too. For the first time ever, the festival added chairs on the grass, and they took up about 80% of the front row, so early arrivals sat farther away from the stage then they ever have in the past.

One of my sons, his GF and her two kids came, Wally and his daughter Keri and her BF, and Larry,a friend of mine from Boston at various times used our blankets as viewing turf, as did Graces parents and friends during the Allman Brothers.

Just a fantastic lineup, right up my alley. Kicking off at 11:30 AM, from New Orleans, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band put the crowd in the mood.

GPN followed, with Grace in a belted blue dress and calf high white go-go boots. She lamented all the empty seats in front. You see, one of the (likely unanticipated) problems of having seats is that people have no need to get there early to stake out their turf- and be present for the early acts. The peeps that treated this as "AN ALLMAN BROTHERS CONCERT" (which was smokin') could arrive at 4:30 or so...leaving prime real estate vacant. There were few folks in the seats for GPN- it looked like Moses had parted the Red Sea.

Sound was good, Grace was in smoky voice, sounding sweet on a version of "Lose Some Time" with just Scott. "Paris" continues to engage the crowd in an ooh la la singalong, and NBTW I & II closed. Grace was animated about the new album coming out. And, unlike perhaps it was earlier suggested that they might get a label ok to do a pre-release sale at NFF, no such luck.

Label has done great promo work, but missed the boat on this opportunity. Would have been pretty special to say "We beat up the bosses at the label on this one, and we have just 200 copies of our new album, NOT EVEN OUT YET, for sale to mark the special occasion of being on the Harbor Stage at Newport" or something like that. Hell ,what do I know...

Oh, I know what I know! Matt said the drum head will be used during the tour, but not to worry, the logo will return eventually. Another case CRACKED!!

After the set, nice to see manager Justin with the band. He has been out with them for the Japan leg and will be in NYC for the GMA appearance. I hear that it will be one song and also 2 out takes to commercials, all, I THINK, in the 8:30 half hour. Load in is at 4:30 AM.....yawn.

Didn't get to talk to Jen as much as I would have liked..gee, yathink she might be busy?

John Butler Trio was up next and they creat a groove, lemme tell you, very powerful set. I ran into Maura, who had stood next to me at The Hatch shell show. She didn't know GPN, and I didn't know JBT so we filled each other in there, and here she was again to see JBT. What a shocka !

No Miss All Stars up next. I have seen them several times, so used this chance to walk with my family down to the docks to hang out for a few minutes with Potter family friend Doug at his boat. Until Sparky came running down, breathless, to report GPN was doing an impromptu accoustic mini set at the Gibson guitar tent. I knew they were headed there, to get some swag, (and maybe lay the ground work for some comp equipment?)

So we ran back up in time to hear Piss on Your Hand, with special muppet guest courtesy of a hidden Matt, and then Paris. I hear they opened with a Gillian Welch/ David Rawlings cover, and another song before I got there.

After this is was time to head back to catch ABB. Man, they have their thing and they do it well. Have seen them a lot, as Susan Tedeschi opened a number of shows for them, where she met and married guitar wizard Derek Trucks, who in the last year fronted his own band of 14 years, is a full member of ABB, and toured in Clapton's band. Talk about a workload...

Also seen in the crowd was FrenchSteph, but I must give a special thanks to Aya, who not only made the trip to Japan, but risked life, limb, and arrest to smuggle in an import copy for me that I am quite excited to get...but I am torn...the packaging has such neat Japanese stickers and labels on it, I have yet to open and hear "Belladonna" and "Over Again"

    The decisions I wrestle with....

So heat notwithstanding, a great day with some of my family, the Potter family, Matts parents in the crowd for a bit, Wally and family, and a co-worker Ed and his family group of six.

We hung for an hour after the show, yet it still took 40 minutes to get thru Newport on a Summer Saturday night.

    SetList

    Ah Mary
    Bus
    MasterMind
    Falling or Flying
    Lose Some Time
    Paris

I've never posted on here before, usually just a silent reader, but figured with the new record out OFFICIALLY today, I could OFFICIALLY post for the first time on this forum...

It's not a "secret" anymore...and I'm not talking about the "secret show"...

What a great touch this show was for a record release party. Back in the same building the momentum started some years ago.

Buy a CD for $10 you have been waiting for, oh, I don't know, FOREVER, and be one of 200 people issued a numbered laminate to get you in to a cozy joint for a rockin' night.

Appreciating the headsup, I call PurePop Records and buy a CD on Monday. And Tuesday, after an appointment, I leave Massachusetts for the familiar ride north. Pulling into Burlington 3:15 later, still dressed in white shirt and tie, I head down So. Winooski Street to the store. Ahead of me on the right, past a parking lot, is a 4 story brick building with a fire escape. And there, perched on a landing and on the phone, is a familiar silhouette....black hat, white t-shirt, black vest...yup, as I draw closer it's Matt...as I pass I give the casual nod, like it's an everyday thing...which gets me the Matt ear-to-ear-grin.

Pure Pop is a tiny basement store and the clerk says it was hectic, the band had just been in..."They were all excited and bought copies of the CD themselves"

I'm psyched and head to the little motel past Higher Ground, where I check in and get exactly 14 minutes of shut eye before awaking and heading to the venue for a bit to eat.

A free parking space across the street, a sandwich, and a view of the line forming out on the sidewalk, and then up the stairs into Metronome. The stage is set near the back of a narrow room with a bar halfway back against a center wall, wrapping around to the other side of the room where there are some cushioned lounge benches. And big old windows that look out past the big rotating neon sign to the street below.

Jen, FrenchSteph, and Marks wife complete the scene around the merch table. A special commemorative Tshirt is purchased, and then folded and left on the back table so I don't have to carry it all night...which Steph later sells as the last XL. I have a better chance of getting a single one made then i do of getting down to a "L".....

    The band takes the stage a little late, but I am center 3 deep and ready. I must say, I think the lighting there might be the best of have seen for GPN. Several small mini spots right overhead that work to great effect. Hey, you can hardly tell that Grace has green skin like Glamour mag thinks. {Could it be that "Animal" has turned her green in his fiendishly Muppet way?}

The excitement in the air is palpable as the band breaks into "Ah, Mary" and continues straight thru the set list, delivering "This is Somewhere" in order, before leaving the stage. Many highlights tonight, but chief among them:

    Mr. Columbus: A different ending
You May See Me: Solo (!) with a brand new, first time used
    new Gibson Les Paul
    Lose Some Time: with Scott
MasterMind: A new "who-ish" open, with roots traced back to
    Baba O'Reilly

The encore was a full frontal assault. The occasional purist in me points out that encore opener is actually a Band Of Gypsies song, "Who Knows" (To which some of you would say, I'm sure, "Who Knew?")

It rolled right into "Farmer John" followed by sing along "Come Together" . "PARIS", "Watching You", and "Cortez" closed the night in a frenzy of a guitar threesome till Matt finished the night off with a final downbeat.

Whew! And the air conditioner, set at 60, was workin' OT

Scene in the Crowd: Mr & Mrs P, uber fan Kelly and family, and Aya, sprung from her jail cell on a 3 hour parole.

Great night, marred only by a 4:35 alarm after a 1 AM turnin..

At the downtown store, in a vast old recycled bank, immediately next to the vault, a backline drum kit, amps, and mics waited for the band. In the crowd was Scott's Mom, Dad, brother, and nephew. There is a family tree for you..his father, brother, and brothers son, all carved from the same block, don't know that I have ever seen three generations that look so alike. If you put them in profile side by side, it would look like the child growing up.

GPN rolls in about 40 minutes late, delayed by traffic, and a long day that included the drive from Burlington, a WBOS interview, and FOX TV 25 interview as well.

In fact Matt played first song Ah Mary without cymbals, that arrived in the second wave...and he hurriedly tried to set them up as Grace pulled away in "The Bus". Joined by friend Larr and Lance, we sat in what was the third row of six rows, six seats wide. More jammed around the sides, and Larry said it was the iggest crowd, and LOUDEST band, he had ever heard there. And I am certain band felt they were whisperin'...
The backdrop was a two story wall, the first story was all stories, books, and the second story was a street level wall of windows. My worst fear, a street person using that window for a personal version of POYH, did not come true, whew, but more then a few street folks stopped to peer in a few seconds.

Just a sweet little six song set, closing with Matt playing books, then pulling some down on himself as Scott tossed another on the drums. Just a book club....

And a fantastic chance to favor some relative subtlety to Scott's sweet picks, Bryans faithful bottom line and Meantime lead, Matt's creativity and Grace's vocal nuances.

Fans had a chance to line up, get a CD or pictured, and autographed as well.

    Another bargain appearance!!

Hi there, Long time lurker, second time poster. Anyway....

I was at the WBOS interview that Tedheadone mentioned in his post. I got a call from 'Bos the day before the appearance saying that I could attend the performance along with 8(?) other listeners.
Grace and Scott only played Ah, Mary & Falling or Flying, but it was well worth the trip up from RI. They were quite tired from the "secret show" the night before but were very pleasant to everyone at the studio. Grace posed for pics(I got mine signed in Providence the next night.-Thanks!) and made small talk. Can't wait until they come around to southern New England again.

Maybe it was starting to catch up on sleep, maybe it was only one daytime appearance, maybe it was being set up and ready to go with sound check, maybe it was having cymbals from the get go, maybe as simple as a nice day, warm and dry, not hot and humid.

As much as I enjoyed the Borders Boston set, the set tonight was even better..and I certainly had nothing to complain about last night, don't get me wrong.

Expecting the same six song set (why would I do that), for this little four store run, they shook it up right off the bat..Brought out by the, um, rather enthusiastic Border guard, Grace kicked off with a solo acoustic version of "You May See Me" for a hushed gathering of perhaps 70 people.

Bringing out The Nocs, Bryan grabbed his mandolin, and Grace turned to Matt and said "Accordion time", so Matt switched gears and came to the front. "Tuning" it while the others tuned guitars, I could really hear him, and was actually able to discern the accordion during the song...a little more juice in the mic and I hope they remember to bring it up in the mix in the future...a nice compliment to the mandolin.

"Meantime" got the place rockin' and Scott really powered "Stop The Bus" with just delicious command.

Next up was "Big White Gate" with Grace at the mic sans guitar. This is pretty rare in my experience(...but she has done parts of "Who Knows" with only a hand held.)

Before the song started she asked for water, could she have some of Scott's..took a big swig, smiled and said "We're like Fleetwood Mac, we can share each others germs" which drew some chuckles, and a bigger grin from Grace "Only the old folks got that!" (You see, Mick Fleetwood and...aww, nevermind) and she launched into a particularly powerful and poignant take on this beauty.

Announcing the last song, someone yelled out "Ooh la LA". Grace said, well if you're good, but I wanna sing "Ah, Mary" which she did.

And then they gave us a 7th song, "Paris"

A memorable set, and a chance to hear Grace, with assurance and a subtle smile, change notes to suit her voice this evening on three songs that, this night, truly showcased her voice and the emotion it conveys. A night in which each band member did truly shine, made all the more impressive being just a seven song set.

    Nice work, Nocs!

Scene in the crowd: George from Hollywood Records, up from NY, enthusiastic about sales so far. I was pleasantly surprised by my sons' GF and her kids, up from Narragansett, and friend Larry, who couldn't pass up a second night, down from Boston on the commuter train

If you are in Western Mass., they will be doing an acoustic radio set Friday in Springfield. Sorry, that's all I got.....

I can hardly hear a B-3 or any or the other instruments(except for solos) anywhere on the album unless I put in earbuds and concentrate hard. I know she plays it. It is just down in the mix like everything else except her voice. It is also very muddy to me. I turned the bass to zero on every different device I tried it on and it still did not improve.
The setlist for the Stone Church is similar to the album that is all. In the subject line I put that they knew before they left New England. Meaning they ran through the album live before heading off to the studio to let the engineers ruin them. Well you can't ruin Mastermind or Mr. Columbus they were born that way. I hope the album is successful and that the band and all of you love it. I don't love it.
This happens with fans and bands all of the time. They change and progress and while they gain new fans they lose some others. It happens.

i agree with you treat and i'm another long time fan who is definitely bummed out about the sound and tracklist of the album. however i do think/hope some of that was out of their hands and in the hands of those that have coldplay credits i really, really hope so.

they still bring it live and in that domain there isn't any out of touch old farts messing with the BAND'S sound...

i also chalk some of this up to the "loudness" wars. dylan recently said he hadn't heard a good album in 20 years and what i believe he was referencing is the loss of dynamics in modern day popular music. when i play any modern record all the instruments are jacked way up creating that awful muddy sound whereas if i play an old aretha record for example i can actually pick out the different instruments. when you make a record and then send it off to the big money mixers and mastering houses these days they tend to destroy the subtle beauty that you can still find in a live performance.

They are/will always be a live act to me. They are all so fun to watch. And good at what they play/sing. Scott keeps rising up my list of favorite guitarists. Beams & Lasers is an appropriate name btw. I want to believe that the sound issues I have were done in the post production and without the band directly involved.
I hope they get lots of radio play with the new songs and make a boat load of cash so they can be even more independent on the next album. Then, once they have completed the 2 disc obligation they can find an even less intrusive productin team.
Maybe I am totally wrong and this is what they wanted to sound like all along. What little I know of Scott and Bryan I don't think so.

'One part Daly two parts Cicarrelli(sp?) yeah yeah............I can't hear Scott anywhere........

I still think they are one of the best bands tourning right now.
And Matt plays a mean bookshelf.

I'm looking at the setlist for Stone Church 3/11/2007, and yes, they did play a bunch of songs from the new album, but maybe I miss your point, below.

"Meaning they ran through the album live before heading off to the studio to let the engineers ruin them"

They left New England on October 2nd 2006 to go to the studio. The Stone Church show was the second show they did, in 2007, after completing the album.

Ah, Mary, Mr C, and Mastermind made their debut at the NYE run at Higher Ground 2006

In a recent interview, Grace commented about how sometimes albums that you like the best, are ones that you didn't love right out of the chute

These three songs have come to grow on me the last 4 months....

Ah, MAry... for its' political statement

Mastermind... for the metaphor... for the music business? What's the reference? Justin? Matt for getting the band going? Bob Cavalho/The label for all the cross marketing? A combo?

MR. C just the lightest, poppiest song, but the juxtaposition of a very heavy lyric on top of the lightness..."Hey, CHRISTOPHER, we're at the EDGE OF THE WORLD, HERE" and we're going to the other side...

At the risk of being a UGIZER, (Shakey!) I think it's a brilliant effort.

But, honestly, what I love the best, is I have had many 60 minute+ conversations with friends about this album. Content/lyrics/marketing/production. Talking about music. Music that matters to me....and that's cool.

tedheadone you are obviously one of their biggest fans and i am glad you love the record. i also know from your reviews that you have seen them live more than most.

i am curious as to what you like about the production of the album. are you able to hear all the instruments clearly? do you think grace's voice sits well in the mix? i've seen a few comments by users about how they like the production. what about it? somebody help me...

i have tried for months now to get into this record and i cannot. inevitably i will pop in a live recording of the band after a try just to ease the pain(a musical alka seltzer if you will).

we can tackle the lyrics next if you like. we can start by discussing the merits of taking the gorgeous and dirty slide guitar off of meantime and replacing it with a chorus that has the line 'look at the girl you could be kissing'. dirty is good and i miss the dirty.

once again, i am glad folks like it and i enjoy talking about good bands, there is no harm meant.

    Marty,

I know you were asking Ted but I want to give you my answer. If you look at my collections of music you would see that my preferance are artists with great or unusual voices particularly female singers. I don't go for the pop artist but many are lesser know like Grace, Patti Griffin, Damien Rice Etc. So knowing that the voice is a key part of what I enjoy would tell you why I like the more polished stuff. Don't get me wrong I love the instruments also. My favorite all time artist is Stevie Ray Vaughn and of course he was all about the guitar
I do agree that the instrumentation was too low and you have to be paying attention to here it in Somewhere but Graces voice is why I love the CD. Besides I get to here them 2 to 3 time per year live and often listen to their recorded stuff where the balance is usually much better depending on the room and location of mic's etc.

ok, thanks and that makes sense. i also think grace has a voice that is out of this world and i can understand why it's accentuated. but imho her voice will stand out no matter what and in this case i feel the rest of the sound of this band is severely compromised.

it almost seems to me that the folks making this record have never heard the live band. again, it feels like a solo record to me. i think she's got some great musicians in her band and i like them as much as her voice so i feel like i got only 25% of what i ordered

i am not against polished, polished is fine. just polish it all.

As a Deadhead veteran of over 200 shows, you're preaching to the choir about the differences between live music and studio recordings. GPTN can't perform live for everybody...as much as we would like them to. They, like other bands, must rely on a major label to distribute their music to a mass market. Of course, concessions must be made, even if that means compromising their 'sound' somewhat.

I'm listening to a ripping version of "Who Knows" from the Chicken Box right now. There's NO WAY that would be released on an album/disc, but damn don't we love that kind of jamming!

All this reminds me of how we hated Shakedown Street when it was first released. We called it "disco Dead". Now, it's one of my favorite albums.

I'm bummed I can't make it to either show this weekend.
I'll have to hold on for Teadhead's reviews.

See you in Boston on the 7th.

Thanks for the tone of your response, I was prepared for a hard hit given some of the posts here lately! And I know you have a bit of history as well(!) I wanted to think about it a bit before responding. And I wanted to listen again. So first let me say..

    A. I am older then most
    B. I am dumber then most
    C. Everybody in New England believes they could manage the
Red Sox...cuz they watch the games
    D. Music fans think they could produce a record...cuz they
    love music

Which got me thinking, about all these "production" comments. Many people have commented that this CD is not like the live experience. And I had, really, an "Aha" moment. Grace has talked alot about her parents 60's & 70's record collection- listening to it growing up. It means enough to her, and The Nocs, that they have produced a vinyl "single" and will release the album as, oddly emough, "an album" in the Fall.

And I thought back to my experience listening to music growing up..and the AHA realization was, (as much as I HATE to use the expression...see "A" above) "back in the day" groups did not tour and perform live like they do today. They went into the studio with new songs to lay down. Probably often off to the studio to actually write new songs in the studio! Like a job! Not songs that they had been playing for months or more (Meantime was played as a "new" song at the 11/12/2005 Paradise show). So "back in the day" you bought your album, likely called your friends to bring over a six pack and a fat one, and had a listening party. And you heard songs you had never heard before, you grew to love and embrace them, and if you were fortunate enough, the band came near you, and you went and heard them live. And the songs would start with what was on the record and expand outward from there. A polished song that could get messy. And every once in a while, if they were really good, a band would put out A LIVE ALBUM. Snore.

And today, you can go to archive.org, thanks to our fantastic tapers, and willing band, and hear 20 live shows..and never buy a god damn thing or put a nickel in the bands pocket to help them mount the costs of a tour! (sorry, editorial comment)

So today, we all come at this from precisely 180 degrees. We all here have heard and loved live songs (messy) and await a studio (polished) version.

I have to believe that nobody that sees GPN on TV or hears a song on the radio and then purchases the 11 (or12) (or 13) songs is going to be complaining about "production".

I know this because a woman I used to work with saw the Boston Globe review of This Is Somewhere and thought of me. After an email exchange, she said she was gonna buy from itunes. The next day she sent me the following email:

"Ok, so I downloaded the cd yesterday, and had the ipod on shuffle. I heard 'here's to the meantime' and went nuts!!!! She/they are crazy good!! They remind me of Maria McKee of Lone Justice. Grace's voice and lyrics are great!!! Now I get it... anytime they're in town and you want some company, count me in! "

I agree 100% with the review, that was linked in the forum, that graded the album an "A" with the comment: "Grace is already a star. A million people need to find out"

I listen mostly in my car...BOSE..better then home, but last night I sat down at the computer with good speakers, a legal pad, and open ears. I listened to each song once through. Then went back and listened, backed up, listened again...I examined them.

IMHO, there is a lot of nitpickin going on. I am happy to nitpick..cuz that's all I got....here we go:

    1. Too long a break between tracks 10-11 Falling and Big White Gate.

    2. The break between tracks 7-8 Lose Some Time and Mastermind, more of a bridge, has six "swells". I think 3 or 4 would be enough to carry into next track.

    3. B-3 is a distinguishing sound. Yes, I might have liked 5% more volume in the mix anytime it was used. Except in Ain't No Time, where the B-3 got its' due.

    4. Back up vocals/Booty Call choir. Likely "just" Grace, again, I would like a smidgeon more prominence, except on "You May See Me" where it was a bit louder anyway.

    5. Bryan on Meantime could be more prominent. He has a great bass line throughtout the song. I actually think he should come to the edge of the stage live with a spotlight, especially since the stand up and the 1 or 2 solos he took on it seem to be in the past..

    6. Mastermind...brought in 4 horns, lets hear 'em!

    7. Can't tell what the sound is at 4:28 of Apologies

    8. At 4:10 of Falling or Flying, I wish Grace would reach out and just clobber the word "bright" in the line "the room was dark but the stage was BRIGGGGGHHHHHHTTT. I've heard her just tilt her head back and launch the word into outer space on stage.

Having said this, the production credits are "Mike Daly with Grace Potter and The Nocturnals" They know what they are doing and what they want. See "B" and "D" above..

So much for the nitpicks..here are the details of what I love, the little things I noted as I listened, pen in hand.

    1. Ah Mary.
0:08 I love the bass intro. reminds of the strong bass intro on first song "Toothbrush" last album
2:19 wha, wha wha quietly on guitar
3:10 Matts Keith Moon moment into Scott's solo that stays strong right thru the end
3:54 back up vocals nice harmony

    2. Stop The Bus
0:01 The percussion shaker I can hear in the left channel for the first 55 seconds. The backup vocals!
0;30 Haunting harmonica that repeats at 0:48 and 1:42
0:45 Scotts funky chords to :55 The backup vocals!
2:15 Scots dirty growl that turns crystal clear at 2:36 The backup vocals!
3:40 hanging ending that circles back to a taste of harmonica

    3. Apologies
Piano and the underlying organ that just kinda stirs underneath the whole song
2:03 Backup vocals! to end of song
    2:45 Scott clear, plaintive solo
    4:04-4:06 "fear yeah"
4:24 "too late for a soliloquy" Listen to the unique harmony, especially how it goes LOW on the word soliloquy
    4:55 Trembling B-3

    4. Ain't No Time
Nice pickin, nice simple piano chords early before..
1:27 the B-3 takes over, YES!, and together with...
1:37 Scott soar right up to
1:52 megaton lyric "purple Mountains Majesty's turned all black and blue" what a damning indictment..B-3 turn to soar
    2:22-2:25 soft piano tinkling upwards
shimmering end after softly strummed chord

    5. Mr Columbus
    drumming throughout
2:05 The line "all inside your mind" and the guitar give me a flash of 1968 Amboy Dukes "Journey to The Center of Your Mind"
    2:36 Wurlitzer?

    6. You May See Me
    1:06 "oh, forget"
    2:04 OHIO
    Lap steel to the B-3
2:52 to 3;28 Mellotron? lap steel and B-3 building to....
3:29 "Hoohhh, you got the eyes"
    Nice backup

    7 Lose Some Time
    Matt playing his thighs
    Sweet pickin throughout
    0:54 Bryan adding Mandolin
2:30-2:34 Mandolin step up and down
    Accordion joining in
    Lap steel
Change (admission) of sleeping with A ghost to sleeping with YOUR ghost

    8. Mastermind
    Love the piano open
    Booty Call choir
    Matt poundin' away
    I LOVE HORNS..not expected

    9. Meantime
    Stones-y intro, slide and piano
    Just rocks
And, yup, not as "slidey" as live/prior version. Song has been redirected from "at Grace, to at you"
"look at what tomorrow left behind"
    MAMAMAMAMAMA
    Final "WHOMP" chord

    10 Falling or Flying
    Haunting guitar open

    11. Big White Gate
    Jesus, what's not to love...

And that brings this exercise to a close..BUT WAIT, there's more! There is another version that has a 12th song , Till The Morning Comes...and there is yet another version, imported, that has BellaDonna and Over Again. And I happen to have both of them.

And, believe it or not, they become two completly different albums depending on which you listen to.

    12 Till The Morning Comes.
Many of you might not have experience with this song

    There's a little grey scarf
On the cap of your knee
It was born on the road
    You were born before me

    There's a forbidding sound
As you sit down to speak
    It will swallow your words
    Before you ever come clean

    So why don't you follow
    Me down to the bay
Where the light did shine yesterday
And I promise that you won't want to leave
    Till the morning comes...around

    Follow me down
    Why don't you
    Follow me down
    Why don't you
    Follow me down
    Why don't you
    follow me down

Won't you let me on in
Let me in to your soul
    Won't you let us begin
    You will never
    Never
    Never grow old

So why don't you follow me
    Down to the bay
Where the light did shine yesterday
And I promise that you won't want to leave
    Till the morning comes
    Till the morning
    comes around

I find my self frequently using the words "simply gorgeous". This song is...simply... freakin'......gorgeous.

It is slow, and on the Barnes and Noble disc it joins Apologies,
You May See Me, Lose Some Time, and Falling or Flying as slower tempo songs. Five out of twelve...perhaps giving the overall album an impression of a "ballad influenced" release.

Then, we go entirely in the other direction with the japanese import version. And I think I can say that if this was the album you folks heard, there would be less of the comments about the "live" experience, because these songs ROCK, and it now gives the overall impression of the album as a rockin uptempo release

    12 Belladonna
The rest of me has lost my whole damn mind...
    Tell your secrets....to the crowd
    2:14 Nice fuzzy guitar solo
    2:38 Honky tonk, joplin-esque piano
3:19 The rest of me has fallen far from Grace

    13 Over Again
So glad I have a studio version of this. I never got all the lyrics from this song live, it's sometimes just hard for me to discern. See "B" above. This song is a plea for someone to avoid a relapse and the inevitable slip into insanity it brings

Do you worry about your troubles
Do you hid behind the pain
Do you listen to your loved ones
    As you fall over again
    Over again

Do you wonder who the face is
On the wrong end of your gun
Are you sorry for the life you've taken
Or did you do it just for fun

You tell everyone you're just going 'gainst the grain
Ah, but the truth and the lies all start to sound the same
so before you stick that needle in your vein
    Kiss your mama goodbye
Cuz you know you're gonna fall
    Over Again

You have fallen by the wayside
Just like the time you did before
And if you don't pick up the pieces, babay
they'' just stay there on the floor

You tell everyone you're just going 'gainst the grain
Ah, but the truth and the lies all start to sound the same
so before you stick that needle in your vein
    Kiss your mama goodbye
Cuz you know you're gonna fall
    Over Again

Just start over from this moment
Let the ones who love you in
let your beating heart break open
    please dont fall over again
    Please dont fall over again
    Please dont fall over again
    Please dont fall
    Repeated a few times...

From here the song goes into almost 3 minutes of solo heaven, a literal crescendo of furiosity representing the disaster of heavy drug use, with all the impact of John Lennon's "Cold Turkey"; perhaps a rockin' nod to "The Needle and The Damage Done"

The song doesn't end so much as it comes to a resolution with a piano chords ticking down to a final, lingering chord.

Hearing all the lyrics raises the impact of this song by a power of 10. Minimum.

And so, after several hours at the computer dissecting, I don't love this album anymore..................I'm officially blown away.

Vtfor me, I'm with you. The amazing instrument that is Grace's voice, coupled with her innate gift of timely, resonant songwriting, prove that reviewer right. She is a star, people just gotta discover her.

And if that is thru Fallin or Flying on Greys anatomy, Apologies on some teen show, Over Again in some Just Say No campaign, a picture in Glamour Magazine, or opening for Gov't Mule, I say it's all good.

You know the history. They didn't want to be the next Norah Jones. The won a "Jammy". They are not a jam band. The were named one of "Ten Blues Bands To Watch" by Rolling Stone. They are not a blues band. Damn, they have proven they can unplug, and would have sounded right at home at the Real Newport Folk Festival, circa 1965. And, oh by the way, Scott can go toe to toe with any friggin guitar god you wann a throw him in the ring with, he's that good. And Bryan and Matt just take them higher.

I'm a voice guy. My name here, Tedheadone, is because I have been a huge fan of the fabulous Susan Tedeschi, and her voice for the ages. How huge? On her album Wait for Me there were 11 songs. I was in the audience the nights that she premiered SIX of them..that means going to A LOT of shows (check out "Hurt SO Bad", "Wait for Me" or "Just Won't Burn"). Susan, I love her. I can't wait to see her next Friday on The Cape. But she is just not the songwriter Grace is. Hell, few are, nothing to be ashamed of. Take a look at a Bonnie or Sheryl or Faith, or most any star. They "interpret". Grace delivers.... a major difference. I would buy a ticket to hear her sing the Yellow Pages. Maybe its time for a new name here...perhaps GracefulOne

We all are incredibly fortunate to have stumbled across this band. We are the 1% who know, who claim The Nocs as our own. Who care enough to question production. We are the "early adopters'. I have a passion for this band and crew.
Thank God they are New Englanders. Maybe they CAN manage the Red Sox, after all.

I hope I have answered your question...I spent about six hours on it...and it only reinforced what I already felt deep within. I'm on the bus, where are we going, Grace? Justin has a road map. I don't care, just drive.

I approach the general area about 6;30 for the 7 PM start, finding a street parking space about three blocks away.

State Pier in Portland is a working facility. The Casco Bay Line ferry goes out and some commercial shipping originates and ends here. The stage is set up about 2/3 of the way down the pier. To enter, you walk down from the main drag where there are all kinds of restaurants, a nice restored brick vibe.

During the set, the ferry departed, and arrived, giving the passengers a shot of GPN. Also during their set, a two masted sailboat motored in and tied up right alongside. Was really cool to just see these masts coming along the pier.

They have set up a few turnstiles for entrance and a beer garden to the left side, which, thankfulky, is packed. Less folks to head down front.

As I approach the entrance to buy a ticket, Jen appears on my left with news that they are one down tonight. Turns out tech Dan came down with something, was hospitalized in Colorado, and since they could not identify the cause, would not release him to fly. I hope hes okay, and will update.

Luckily, prior tech Swany was already onboard to come on up, so a bullet is dodged, personnel-wise.

I get my ticket, and as I go in notice an orange snow plastic fence set up along the right side of the pier, where backstage entranceis made. It is about 2 feet wider then a 10 person van. Later on, as I was standing right next to it, the Black Crowes came driving slowly down the pier, about 2 feet away from me..

There has already been an opener that has exited the stage and I see Swany and Jen onstage. There are people already along the rail, but I am 2nd deep just off center and await the set.

I do a 360, slowly, to observe the setting. The view from the stage is of a city skyline, straght ahead rising slowing up the hill. To the left is the ferry terminal, and farther away a bridge. The sun is shining, still, on the stage, but will set during GPN.

This thing is run on schedule, as the announcers are at the mic and are ready to bring the band out at 6:57, but have to wait a few minutes, finally announcing the hottest up and coming band from the summer of 2007, GPN.

Different setup tonight with Bryan on the left side of the drum kit, closer to Grace.

Opener Ah, Mary is a little low on mic volume and takes a bit to get corrected. This is a big time stage, so there is a nice bass and drum volume coming from the speakers below the 6 foot high stage.

    Highlights tonight.

MasterMind sequeing into Treat Me Right and a nice piece by Grace playing both the B-3 and Rhodes at same time, nice volume, hearing both cleanly.

Next Up, Over Again, and during the crescendo of furiosity the sun sets over the KeyBank skyscraper and the stage lights suddenly are prominent.

Who Knows followed with Grace working the hand held mic before sitting down at the B-3 and trading some mimicing licks with Scott

It is clear that opening for a Black Crowes or a Mule will be a harder driving set. But again, what do I know next up is Falling or Flying in which she hit a deliciously high note on the word tomorrow, so striking.

Next up was Scott and Grace on Lose Some Time. Quietly done, and as it closed, I could see Scott mouth the word pretty at the end. He was right.

Before the song, Grace had one of the Flying Vs and made some funny comments about the show, what 4 hours ago? at The Lyons Folk Festival in Colorado the day before. I guess a lot of purists where taken aback by the site of a Flying V guitar.

The band took a midnight redeye back to Boston

During "Watching You, there was a technical issue with Scott, he stabbed at his foot pedals, Swany came out, and Scott ended up throwing the cord into the crowd, trying another guitar, before finally putting it down, and walking around Matt to pick up some sticks and take over the floor tom.

And during Nothing But The Water finale, they did a four way on the drums, before leaving the stage a capella.

Surprisingly, the MC brought them out for encore of Big White Gate.

Scene in the crowd. Cary Boeing, last spotted at Lowell in 06, and the Stone Church in March. Also saying hello were the Placid People (from Lake, Katie & John) although I could not find them after the set..

After set, standing up along the fence at the corner, I waited to see the start of the Crowes. Two observations.

    A. Man, some volume
    B. Kate Hudson, glad you smartened up

Making my way back through the crowd, there was now no line at the food, so I snared a quick cheeburger and headed back on down the pier. Exiting the pier and reaching the intersection and turning the corner, in the space of two feet the sound changed from a muddy wash pouring down the pier (see A above), to crystal clear. It sounded like someone had speakers out the 5 story brick building at the corner, but the sound was just reflecting back off it. I stood there for about 5 more minutes, and several passerbys did as well. There was a bench, and if I didnt have 3:40 ride to Burlington I would have sat and listened, and heard (!) the Crowes set there.

But I didnt, hitting the road at 9:30 sharp.

A reloaded cd player features ome Bs for the ride tonight:

    Jon Butler
    Jackson Browne..Late for the Sky
    James Brown at The Appolo
    plus
    Lori McKenna (new this week)
Susan Tedeschi Wait for Me..in prep for her show at Hyannis on Friday.

Good clean ride over, the temp hitting 49 at one pointFall is around the corner..

Very comfy beds in the Hilton...by the time I finally turn in Saturday night it's after 3 AM and I manage to still get 8 hours sleep, getting me up and out by the crack of noon. Wow. While sitting outside by the front door and on the phone, Matt walks by. He said he had gotten a good nights sleep and was "ready to ROAR"

Coming out the front door of the hotel, Lake Champlain is in view across the road and down the hill. I decide to forego the Maritime Festival to explore Burlington, walking down to Church Street, the commercial hub of the city. The street is permanently closed off and is lined by outside tables for the eateries and bars

Lobster roll on one menu catches my eye, so I sit down and order a burger. Go figure...and when I eventually finish and wend my way back to the hotel, members of Matt, Grace , and Jen's family are gathering up on the top floor, with a commanding view of the lake and concert site below. The Burr contingent is particularly large, with 8 of Matts nieces and nephews. He is indeed a Pied Piper.

By the time I get down to the site, a field on the edge of the lake, with the stage facing the lake, and the mountains in New York on the far side, a big crowd has already gathered down front and I resign myself to observing from farther back tonight. Hey, I been down front plenty...

Opener Josh Ritter delivers a great set, and I can see Grace, her Dad and Scott watching from the back of the stage by the steps. Scott told Sparky, while watching the set, "I can't WAIT to take this stage"

At the break I decide to wander a bit and run across Jen's friend FrenchSteph by the sound board. We are joined by Mark Trepanier's wife Jody, who eventually says they are going for a walk, and I join in. Before I know it, she has me thru the security gate and I'm back by the travel trailers used as dressing rooms....no pass, no badge, no stickee, waiting to be found out and tossed out...which never happens...

s I grab a water in the "green tent", Matt's is on the grass stretching, and Josh Ritter is next to me. I tell him that I sat next to his grandfather at the Boston show at Avalon, and reminded him how he sat on the edge of the stage of the Somerville Theater to sing a song. I told him the only reason I had gone was that Matt had said I "gotta go see this guy" after spending some time with him in Ireland. And how "Thin Blue Line" had blown me away. He was delighted, and actually said, "Awww, I gotta give you a hug" ...and he did

Pretty soon the trailer starts bouncing. (If the trailer's a-rockin', don't come a-knockin'). Its The Nocs doing a pre-show huddle, bouncin of the walls, I guess

And then they file out, with smiles, ready to show Burlington what they got. Hometown heroes, welcomed as such.

My vantage point is from the keyboard side, inside the security fence, about 15 feet from the Rhodes. There is a trade off for this position. Sound is not too loud, because it's beside/behind speakers. But sound not quite as clear, either. This is okay tonight, because even though my ears have been ringing since 1969, they are ringin' loud now because of the shear volume last night.

Also, I don't have to be aggravated by people behind me, jammed in and jostling me. But I also miss the occasional (but always much appreciated ) grind by the girl in front of me. Hmmmm...I'm gonna have to rethink this

    Highlights tonight:

Stop The Bus: Grace started on the Rhodes, a switch from recent versions which have had her opening song on guitar. Matt added an interesting little beat.

BellaDonna: Grace said "perhaps the best decision we made was hiring Hank at Monterey as booking agent" and dedicated the song to him in attendance tonight. They had a split second pause/break right in the middle

Lose Some Time: dedicated to manager Justin, in attendance as well

Falling: Hitting a high note on the word "tomorrow", like she did at Portland

Pretty Good: Josh Ritter is on tour, opening for John Prine. He had a show in Charlottesvile last night, and then hustled North for this show. He sang this song, and Matt gave him his white hat to go with his white suit...

I'm not gonna say the rest of the night was The Scott Tournet Hour, but he brung it, in:

Over Again: The crescendo of furiosity (see my 8/17 post entitled "Marty, after considerable thought" in Music & Songs Discussion, "Songlist for the new album" ) Just another level tonight.

Who Knows: Nice intro, and Jimi channeled

Joey: Great ending with slide guitar on a song that I will admit has always made me a bit uneasy -topic matter.

Paris: "If I was a crow, i'd make my call" then just a fantastic CROW CALL that made me yelp

Watchin You: so sultry/sinister (but in a Yea, baby kinda way)

NBTW: Four way drum solo, but a new "return" to get them back to the song. Didn't recognize it, loved it, thought they were going into a new song, but it came back to the close of NBTW

Cortez: Intro was nice, and the vocals were very clear. Scott scorches and in this whole stretch, Bryan, Matt and Grace were right with him

The night air was chilly, and only the exertion of performing allows Grace to continue to the end in a sleeveless top

Sunset over the mountains and the lake was pretty nice. And the darkness allowed the stage lights to accentuate the fog on the stage. I saw some incredible pics on the back of a camera, that should be something special when full size.

After the show, they had two levels of security. One to get through the fence, and then a second one that was only a family stickee for entrance.

Sadly, get used it, bigger venues, tighter security, less contact. But as big as "backstage" crowd was, everyone that wanted to, got a chance to say hello. The band is very generous at this, and Grace come out from the family area to greet anyone else that got in.

And as it was winding down, a crowd of family/friends started moving out....and I was grabbed into this group as well. There was a boat cruise that was going out for an hour, coming back and going out for another hour. I wondered to myself "How many people want to go out on a boat late at night?" Turns out, the band had chartered a large lake excursion boat to take thier guests out on the Lake. What an unbelievable and thoughtful touch!
Pretty big boat, nicely trimmed and finished. Cash bar inside and hot food and nibbles with Led Zep and The Who playing loudly on the sound system. I had a great time, and by the time it got back at midnight I was ready for the second hour cruise...until I found out it would not be back till 2:30...time to jump ship.

Which I did, walking back to the hotel, spending the night, and having a liesurely breakfast.

Time to hit the road and get back to the real road...as real as it gets.

Scene in the Crowd: Justin, Hank and Nate from indie911..AYA, Scott's parents, vtforme, Fabulous Kelly (sorry I couldn't stop and chat, now you know why) Sparky, Peggy & Lee Potter, my new buddies Elly Burr and Oliver Goss, the Placid People, Jen's family, Beth & Jeff, and tekawitha.

Magnifico! Q: Why did I stay in Bahstin this weekend?
A: Because I love my wife dearly and it was our 12th wedding anniversary.
(...and I keep tellin' her that GPTN is all about love, but I think she just
    wants me all to herself.)

It does sound like a missed a great GPTN show. I think I should venture to Northampton before the stage keep getting bigger.

Hey, doesn't a crow make a "caw"? I thought the lyric the was, "If I were a crow, I'd make my caw".

P.S. I think the Grampy at the Josh Ritter Avalon show that sat next to us was Sam Kassirer's [ (piano, keyboards) from Josh's band ], not Josh's.

Thanks Ted and great having quick meet after the concert. There was also a hint of the next Vermont concert being around Thanksgiving time by the radio station personality that did the GPTN intro.
I wonder where and how many. They have in the last 2 years done a series of VT concerts around the holidays. Higher Ground New Years "06" and the "Bringing it all back home" series "05" This was throughout VT where they sold out all 7 concerts. They weren't even well know in southern VT then.
I was talking to the director of one of the venues, the Paramount Theater in Rutland, about it last week. She told me that 2 weeks before the concert that they had only sold about 200 tickets. They then did an area media biltz with Newspaper and maybe radio interviews and lots of radio playtime to sell out this 850 seat venue. Pretty impressive.

There is a Sat Sep 29th show scheduled at Burke Mt. that I believe is still on, I think the announcement was supposed to come post Burlington show, so let's see if it happens..

Let me start off by saying (even for a woman) I am not at all a weepy person. I rarely cry. At times, I wonder if it wouldn't be healthier if I cried more. So, Sunday night there goes GPTN, diving into Big White Gate during their encore; and there I am standing next to Van trying to conceal the fact that I'm crying like a baby. How embarrassing! I just love that song, and find the lyrics to be utterly beautiful. I even had the quivering lip thing going on!
