    "Dylan" your thoughts

Dylans turning 70! Seems to me people either love him or hate him ! I happen to fall on the love'm side! I just finished the Rolling Stone article , top 70 songs. What a career and catalog of songs. I couldn't come up with top 20 without leaving off so many favs!

    Re: "Dylan" your thoughts

Last November I stood in a very long line for a very long time outside a venue on one of the coldest nights we had all winter. This is my little review of the concert I was waiting to get into.

    Bob Dylan

I'll have something else related to his birthday on another post later.

    Re: "Dylan" your thoughts

Dylan for me goes beyond the status of musician/songwriter into more the realm of True Artist and icon. I can listen to a song for the umpteenth time and still get struck with a different insight from a simple twist of phrase. Having said that, the first time the words "too late for a soliloquy, way too late for dignity..." really registered with me in the context of the story of the song, I thought that was a very "Bob-worthy" choice of words coming from a young songwriter - very impressive.

somebody got murdered on new years eve, someone said dignity was the first to leave!

got to luv the Dylan Unplugged album. just a very small slice of a very large pizza pie, but a very tasty one. so much Dylan out there...best one for me though is the sessions from 5-1-70 with George Harrison. the Puss n Boots shows i saw reminded me of that cd so i went back to it recently. so classic. textbook priceless.

i agree that Potter's songwriting is up there with Dylan. shes not 70 but she writes some heavy tunes. she is a real musician and a real songwriter just like Dylan. would love to hear her cover "like a rolling stone" in addition to my previous suggestions. (and with her recent choice of Jagger covers, she is very much "like a rolling stone" these days)

    Re: "Dylan" your thoughts

favorite lyric is basically impossible for me. he has such a huge body of (great) work...

"There’s a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin’ out of a boxcar door"

might be my favorite or maybe just about all of pos 4th street. that last stanza slays me every time, it is just perfect.

"Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
    To see you"

favorite albums easier for me. blood on the tracks, desire and the electric disk from the live 66 official bootleg series (backed by a lot of the band, easily one of the greatest live sets ever).

i even watched renaldo and clara...

    Ain't talking, just walking
Up the road, around the bend.
    Heart burning, still yearning
In the last outback at the world's end.

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan ( May you stay Forever Young )
    Forever Young
May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
    And climb on every rung
    May you stay forever young
    Forever young, forever young
    May you stay forever young

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
    May you always be courageous
    Stand upright and be strong
    May you stay forever young
    Forever young, forever young
    May you stay forever young

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
May your song always be sung
    May you stay forever young
    Forever young, forever young
    May you stay forever young

    Re: "Dylan" your thoughts

Oh, the only decent thing I did when I worked as a postal clerk
Was to haul your picture down off the wall near the cage where I used to work.
Was I a fool or not to protect your real identity?
You looked a little burned out, my friend,
I thought it might be up to me.

the "lost" song from Blood on the Tracks - along with Tangled up in Blue, on my first glance short list.
