With one foot in the past, one foot in the present, and eyes fixed firmly on the horizon, Grace Potter and The (New) Nocturnals blasted out of the T Bone Burnett produced studio sessions for their first romp through the GPN back catalogue. Looking a lot like the view from the stage at the Burlington waterfront, {except of course, for the palm trees and no mountains on the other side of the water(!) } the Renaissance Stage at Donehey Blues Festival was a great warm up for the upcoming tour. Earning an encore from the crowd, but unable to return to the stage due to the imminent start of Brian Setzer's set on the other stage, The Nocs marched into the future with a reworked gem from the past. 2:22 was the surprise opener, all electric blues. The crowd was officially "grabbed"...allowing Grace to later note "I don't know why they had us here at a Blues Fest".

With a nod to James Brown, Grace announced "Mama's got a brand new band" mid set with the first formal introduction of Benny Yurco from Blues and Lasers on guitar and bassist Catherine Popper, perhaps best known for her work with Ryan Adams and The Cardinals.

From the video's posted it looks like the show was awsome! I am just pissed that I couldn't make it. I like the addition of Benny on quitar I think it will flesh out the songs better and lead to a little more jamming. Catherine seemed tentative on bass hopefully that was first song gitters and the rest she stepped it up.

Although I would much rather read Van's review, this excerpt from Robert Kinsler of the OC Register on May 17, 2009 is a nice one:

As entertaining as Setzer was, his wasn't the best set of the day. Several others outdistanced it thanks to artistic ambition or sheer will. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals might not be the usual choice to appear at a blues fest, but the young Vermont outfit's winning mix of blues, R&B, classic- and roots-rock, gospel and soul impressed mightily during a 75-minute set on the Renaissance Stage.
Potter, 25, is a charismatic singer backed by a revamped lineup making its first-ever public appearance. Although longtime lead guitarist Scott Tournet and drummer Matt Burr remain with the Nocturnals, bassist Catherine Pepper and rhythm guitarist Benny Yurco proved they are the perfect fit for the band.
Going back and forth from her mic at center stage to the seat behind her Hammond B3 organ, Potter led the crowd through a musical world that somehow blended the magic of Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Joni Mitchell and Etta James without sounding anything close to those legendary names.
Several selections from the band's 2007 album "This Is Somewhere" easily replicated the joy of that recording, including "Ah Mary," "Apologies" and "Stop the Bus

Great to see Grace and the new band tearing it up at the Blues Festival over the weekend! I really wanted to head down there myself, but it would have been a long trek from Santa Cruz! Hopefully someone was running audio as well, would love to hear the whole set! In the meantime, the 2 videos that have been posted are certainly nice!
Looking forward to the new record, and more live shows!!

Just saw them at the Doheny blues Fest,they were EASILY the best band all weekend,no one put out a performance like Grace and the Nocturnals,I'm hooked,GREAT BAND!!!!

The weather report doesn't look very good Thursday morning for a swing down to Baltimore, out to Pittsburgh, and back home to Boston. The prospect of 21 hours behind the wheel in the rain is daunting but I head out at 8 ish AM anyway. The trip to Baltimore is uneventful, marked only by seeing an even dozen drivers pulled over by the cops…4 in the first few miles of Connecticut alone…and highlighted by hearing Jefferson Airplane and Marty Balin's deep cut "I Saw You" on the radio along the way.
Aya and The Leaves deliver me across the the bridge into Delaware and before I know it, I'm in the Harbor area of Baltimore and headed down Cross St to the venue. The big bus with the trailer sporting the familiar Vermont license plate is the obvious answer to my "Where's the club" question. But I must circle the block a few times before realizing the bus is across the street from The 8x10 club.
Wandering a few blocks away, I come to a hillside park, fronted with beautiful brick row homes, that looks out across the harbor. I'm guessing Federal Hill is a premier Baltimore address, and looking back down the street I can see the Ravens football stadium many blocks away. Parked in a shady spot, contemplating a little relaxation, I call Mojo who is at the club where I join him out front, quickly joined by Matt and Benny. Benny is totally psyched and keeps repeating he hopes they do Falling or Flying. We duck inside to check out the club.
I think 8x10 is the stage size...this club is small and is actually two row homes combined. There is a balcony, U shaped, that is only about 20 feet back from the front of the stage, and right over the sides. Any place in this club is close, but bar stools on the rail around the balcony are likely very desired real estate....
Mojo and I end up a block away for Thai at a sidewalk table. Service is slow, but we have time and head back to the club around 7:15 for the 8 PM doors. Where we run into Brian, Onefromthesoul, inline, and soon John and TP post crabcake-a-thon. Inside we grab the edge of the stage, foregoing the opportunity of the nice barstools upstairs.
Blues and Lasers softens up the crowd with a body blow of a set, bringing Burlington to Baltimore.
The New Nocs take the stage for their official tour launch. Grace sports a short skirt, with a green tank top and short jacket, that gets lost after first song. Catherine is in black string strap top, black pants over boots. Scott and Benny both style in vest and slacks, and Matt's in, well, jeans and a T shirt.
Highlights Tonight:
Let's see....Opener Some Kind of Ride is a wailing balls to the wall kickoff, with Grace hitting 5th gear right of the bat.
Well, the truth is I don't remember the highlights. The truth is, I got so wrapped up in trying to take pictures and vids so that you can SEE the highlights I find that's where my concentration lies…so here, try this..
Apologies: I do remember Benny laying down a sweet little harmony to Scott's lead, and turning to Mojo, who just smiled and pointed at Benny..he heard it, too.
Catherine: Definitely a stylistic counterpoint to Bryan's stoic backline bottomline, Cat is right at home on mic at the front, with frequent eye contact with the crowd. And she can do a slinky little dance when the spirit moves her. Cat. Aptly named... Can't wait for a little Cat Chat...
The new lineup works. It was wise to bring in both Cat and Benny, because it makes comparisons to the previous foursome impossible. This is a new band with 2 new members, and I hope they have a lot of fun as they mold the new dynamic.
Hanging for just a bit after the show with Guava Girls + Casey (in from Burlington for the weekend to visit Abby), I head out to get a few miles under me on the way to Pitt, and make it, thru the rain, 70 miles to Hagerstown, MD. where I grab a Motel 6 late, download and review some pics, and turn in at 3:30.

Van's recollections in the area of Baltimore miss only one thing - a critical misstep on the clothing choices. In this post Van highlights Grace's outfit from the Mr. Smalls show in Pittsburgh the next night. At the 8 x 10 Grace wore a short blue dress with white and orange highlights. If I'm looking closely, I might also say that Matt's shirt appears to have buttons. Hey, call me a stickler for facts!

Rain. Not precipitation. Not showers. Rain. This is the forecast for my town, for Clearwater, and for all points in between. It is with an odd combination of reluctance, trepidation, and resignation that I fill my gas tank and feel it start to sprit. Resigned to 6+ hours driving through the rain for the chance to stand in the mud, in the rain, and drink in The Nocs. But you never know unless you go, so HEY!, I'm on the road again.
The wipers are working about half the way there until I realize they are not needed any more. The ride goes quickly at this point, and the final 10 miles are through beautiful two lane roads through the reservoirs of Katonah and Bedford NY. I know the destination, as my father was in assisted living near Croton and I used to take him for a ride up the Hudson to Bear Mountain. I used to look at the large commuter parking lot and try to imagine the lives of the Wall Streeter's etc that jumped on that train 5 days a week. It is where I'm supposed to park for the short shuttle bus ride to the festival at the State Park on the point jutting out into the Mighty Hudson.
And as I get out of my car, here comes Jan, sister Carolyn, and two friends....so we hop the shuttle and ride out gravel roads, through a reclaimed landfill, to the site of Pete Seeger's Clearwater Festival, started many years ago as part of the efforts to clean up the river. And I notice a beach with ropes and lifeguard stands. Wow, what a miracle of hard work to reclaim this river. Personally, I'm not sure I'd even wade in it, but, ah, youth!!
Michael is there as a welcome committee, so getting separated at will call is of no concern, as I know where I will find folks later. Wandering in, I head to the main stage area where I get a look at the site. I'm sure a sunny day would have brought more emphasis to the river at the back of the crowd area, but I'm grateful for the lack of rain. There's some mud throughout the site, but most is covered with hay. Michael shows me where the fam has set up, and I head off for a bite. After much deliberation, $10 gets me a pulled pork sandwich, baked potato, and an ear of corn with bottled water. Yum.
Heading back to view some of the save the earth exhibits, I find myself near the back entrance. Matt is setting up his kit offstage, and chatting with his Dad and brother. And I look at someone exiting the stage, and, I'll be: it's Jason Crosby!. Jason was keyboard player with Susan Tedeschi for almost 2 years, and then went with Robert Randolph. Just as I call his name, he calls mine. We catch up warmly. He has just borrowed Grace's B-3 to play with Pete Seeger's son. He remembered my phone message, from last fall when they were on the same bill in Arizona, to make sure he introduced himself to The Nocs as a friend of mine from the old Susan days.
Making my way around the front of the stage, I meet a woman from Waterford, VT who goes to lots of shows. I forget her name...Dayna, is that you? The Posse groups right down front as the flowers that surfaced at 'Roo are placed around the stage. Carnations, roses, tulips, and peonies, all red, to match Scotts' shirt. And some rogue sunflowers laid at the altar of Animal. The Nocs take the stage dressed in, well, jeans and t-shirts are gone..replaced by dresses for the ladies and vests for the guys.
The whole front square of the stage is reserved for handicap, and only three or four folks utilize it, so they let us come a little closer to the center.
Scene in the crowd. Jan, Carolyn, Michael and fam, Burr family- Mon and Dad, brother sister, nieces, nephews. The Burr's live an hour away, Matt has home field advantage, is looking forward to a night in his old bed.
Highlights today besides it NOT raining...
Ah Mary: Scott's broken string requiring new guitar right on cue for his solo
Kitchen: Great New Orleans funkified version, Grace's new clavinet put to good use.
Medicine Lots of smiles
Sweet Hands: Grace requests folks get up out of their seats. They comply.
Coming out of the group drums, into the back half of NBTW.
No encore today. After a chance to say hello to all, after the whole band gathers around Taj Mahal for several minutes, I head for the shuttle and my car and a pretty smooth ride home, only twice passing thru about 5 minutes of rain. Home 11 hours after departing this morning, I have spent more time in my car then on the ground. Sure sign of a turbotrip...

Thanks Van - I've been waiting for your narrative. Even if I've been at show right along side you, as I was happy to be at this one, I still always enjoy the history of the venue that you always provide along with your wonderful anecdotes and insight.
This is a rare chance to see Grace up close and personal in the intimate setting of the beautiful Deane Carriage Barn on the campus of Bennington College in Bennington, VT.
In addition, we'll be hosting a "Meet and Greet" with the artist for an additional fee. This event will take place from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at a nearby location to be determined.
All concert proceeds will benefit Southshire Community School of North Bennington, Vermont

My Recent Posts
The word for the day is GORGEOUS.
Gorgeous day. Gorgeous drive across Southern Vt. on Rt. 9. Gorgeous campus. Gorgeous venue. Gorgeous Grace. And, of course, a Gorgeous grin on Matt.
I haven't taken that drive in along time. But it is 74 degrees, windows and sunroof open, early Friday afternoon. What could be better? Hitting Wilmington, halfway between Brattleboro and Bennington, I remember a West Dover hilltop Inn I stayed in years ago. At the top of a dirt road, the trees opened up for a magnificent eastern view. I want to experience it again, so I detour North on Rt. 100, find the road, and head up. It's paved, now, all the way to the top. And the view has not changed, and the Cooper Hill Inn is still there. As are 2 homes with for sales signs. I wonder how much that view costs...
Tracking back down to Rt 9 I continue West. Part of the way there is the old Hogback MT overview, and today it is clear and 180 degrees of horizon. Don't know why I didn't stop...probably because I remember the old Hogback Ski area, and I want to see how Mother Nature has reclaimed it after decades of abandonment. The ski trails are discernible, barely, and I'm sure in my lifetime it will completely return to a natural state. I do see a bullwheel for a ski lift, rusted and near overgrown. Deserted ski areas sadden me..but I'm sure some conservationists delight in it.
And into Bennington, it suddenly comes to me, memories of a fantastic breakfast place, visited with an old love, Tracey, I shared a romantic weekend with...it was so long ago, it seems.
The entrance to Bennington is spectacular, thru a gate along a road accompanied by a winding gravel footpath. At the first fork in the road, a show poster directs me to the right, away from the main campus. I am stunned by the beauty, it is like the entrance ot a Southern Gentleman's farm. In fact, at 5:30, there is haying going on in one of the fields, before I come to a gorgeous stone home that is now a music building. Continuing on, the Deanne Carrieage House appears on my left. The placement of the barn, the curve in the drive, and the small home on the curve of this drive reminds me of someplace...and it strikes me that it is very similiar in appearance to the Haybarn on Goddard College campus where NBTW was recorded.
There are several Posse lounging on the patio and we catch up, before the doors open for a meet and greet. a crowd gathers around Grace, before she leads the crowd outside for plenty of pics and laughs.Ben and Justin are getting it all set to go. We nail down our seats for the show, and just settle in with anticipation.
And before we know it, Doug is at the mic making a wonderful introduction...talking about the small 40 student school, of which he chairs the board, and of how this benefit came to pass. And doesn't mention it, but was pulled together in just over a month. Nice job, Doug!!
And Grace finally takes the stage tonight, solo, in yellow dress and big smile. And I don't think I can do highlights tonight, the whole night was peak. So here is the setlist

Big White Gate: Great story about writing this for her grandmother and jazzin up her life for this song. She said her grandmother heard it and said. "oh, Grace". Grace says all her Grandmother really did was play golf and make margaritas....to much laughter.
Outta My Tree: Calling Matt out, out of order, she moves this song up from the planned play in the second set. Rarely heard oldie.

Pretty good chance the last time you saw a plague of locusts you were in Egypt. Not Cat Popper. They attacked last night, and she did well to not tumble backwards into her amp, recovering well, and finishing the song with locusts in her hair that she had to brush out as soon as her could take her hands off her bass.. Ok. Ok. Maybe they weren't locusts, per se, but they sure swarmed..obnoxiously..near the end of the show.
A great homecoming show that started early with reunited Pine Island , and I have to say, opener Jennifer Hartswick is officially "a find"...very strong set of originals mixed in with some smokin covers..especially Stevie Wonder's "You Haven't Done Nothing". Also loved her final, a tribute to Michael Jackson, with deep cut "Blame it on The Boogie"
Speaking of MJ..... Is it just me, or did a certain someone down front look a bit like a cross between the gloved one and Cap'n Crunch witha Cowbell. ?
Jackson Browne, set for Shelburne later this week, sang "Rock Me on The Water", but Grace beat him to it this week. Set on the beautiful Lake Champlain shoreline, they pulled out all the stops, with a set list that excited fans both old and new. The Nocturnals rolled right thru a 21 song set that introduced most of the non-posse people in the crowd to at least 7 new songs, two of them premieres, as well as a couple of strong iconic covers of ther own. Janis Joplin's "Try" and Jefferson Airplanes "White Rabbit"; so full, so short, so sweet. A beautiful mix of the new, the familiar, and the classic.
The sun had yet to set when the band kicked into steamroller opener "Some Kind of Ride" but it wasn't long befor the sun went down, stage lights took over, and security requested no more flash pictures. As usual Grace comfortably moved back and forth from the B-3 to center mic. Scott had a real moment in "2:22"
The new songs are going to become much loved staples in the future, and I am sure the band will continue to bring Cat and Benny up to speed on some of the old staples as well as the occasional choice cover, both old and new. (What happened to Golden?)
Scene in the crowd: parents Potter and Tournet, Justin G and fam, Placid People John and Linda, uncles Morgan and Gordie, plethora of posse people, Tekawitha, hey, where was Davyna and Jackie?
Just got back from the Vibe show and I must say ya gotta Love the Passion, Energy, and Talent this band has! Their music speaks to all ages.

The Vibes has come and gone, but left some awesome memories. The drive down wasn't bad using the Merrit and avoiding 91 and 95. Day pass people parked downtown and were shuttled through Bridgeport, I remember thinking the city could have cleaned up their streets a little with so many visitors. Waiting for my sister at the gate, I see Jan and Gary come in and they head to the VIP tent and then we see them over at Blues and Lasers on the Green stage with Jan's sister. We also see Scott's mom and dad, Keri, John, Heath and his sister (where's Van?). Small crowd to start, but as they played, the tent filled up. We throw down a blanket, enjoy the company and the great music! The crowd really liked the fast tunes, especially "(Whole New Way of) Going Down." When Scott asked the crowd to stand up (and dance), they did! Under the tent, it wasn't so hot and not too muddy. The main stage area was a different story though. What a sweat-fest, and stink-fest! Kind of thing were you just have to say "what the heck" and join the festivities. GPN took the main stage at about 2:30. Thank god, we got up at the front where the roof of the stage created shade, but in back of us, pure sun and stickiness! We actually had a little metal platform to stand on too, instead of the hay and mud.
Grace and Cat look beautiful despite all the heat, and Benny comes out with his hair braided in pigtails. Nice big crowd in back of us. The band plays song after song without a break in between. No new songs tonight folks! But I had never heard them do White Rabbit or Try covers, so that was new and interesting. Saw Sparky at the front taking photos, and later Lee came over to say hi! Always a family affair at these gigs -- just one of the reasons I love following this band. Lots of fans at the front I had never seen before who knew all the words. One lady to my left sang the famous last line to 2:22 VERY LOUD, before Grace got to it (during the silent pause) -- that really bugs me. Every one, though, was very pleasant and nice. A happy, relaxed crowd, probably some of them very tired after 2-3 nights of camping and partying. Nothing but the Water was the last song, and Grace mentions how some rain would be welcome about now, but it holds off, and I am glad because it would just be a tub of mud if it did rain. Saw John at both shows playing with some gadget, so I'm sure he has the set lists for us all.
Went over to the beach and stuck my feet in the water while Buddy Guy jammed on, and Jan, Gary and Keri all go for a swim. The water felt so good! Shared a beer with Gary and Jan and later head over to hear Crosby Stills and Nash. They sound great after all these years - and they are singing my favorite "Teach Your Children" as I head out, and bump into Lee and Sparky one more time and we talk about - what do you think? -- The next show!

Sold out show - almost didn't get in. Still not sure if I'll get in tonight - its sold out too. And, not sure about Martha's Vineyard! Let's just say that Nantucket has noticed GPN!!!! Wow! Will give you guys more at the end of the week (biking the island today), but I'll tell you one of the funniest moments last night was when Catherine said something about how Strap-ee she felt in the sweaty bar, and Grace said "your not a Strap-ee girl, more like a Strap-on girl." Catherine not only rocked with her sense of humour. but she rocked the hot pants - short shorts! She looked awesome! The whole band felt something in the air (or maybe it was the week off they just had) and really jammed last night - it was magical!

The Box holds 300 people. With the addition of a smoking terrace outside recently, it isn't really crowded unless you go down front.
TH1, carrjo, JackieinCT and oam were all on the rail when the band came onstage shortly after 11. New this year was a crowd control barricade separating the crowd from the stage by about five feet. (Evidently, there was an incident last year as the band left the stage.)
I liked Medecine and the new treatment of 2:22. The highlights for me were her covers of Janis Joplin and Grace Slick.
She hit every note on "Try, Just a Little Bit Harder" and gave me goosebumps during "White Rabbit."

Agree with One May Away that the the Janis and Airplane covers were the highlights of the night, by far!
Another funny incident was when Grace asked everyone to move the barricade forwards. She asked if anyone in the bar was a sex offender?

It was a game time decision, and pushed over the edge by One Away. Packing and leaving the house at 6:15 for the last ferry at 8:45 out of Hyannis, I am slowed on Rt 495 by traffic for Coldplay at Great Woods. My usual parking spots, private homes across from the ferry, are closed with no attendant and warn of towing for cars left unpaid. Last year I lost my phone on this trip, and two years ago my friggin' car keys, so I am not about to lose my car and am resigned to turning around and heading home. But a past-its-prime motel on Main street offers ferry parking, and the owner offers to drive me to the ferry and I just make it. (One Away says, later "LOVE hearing $!+$ like that!)

Arriving on island, I sling my bag over my shoulder and start the mile walk out of town to the Chicken Box. It is hidden up a side street that I am determined not to miss, unlike the last three years, each year arriving in darkness. I hope to drop my bag in the secure area thru the trellis to the green room, but am blocked by security, until I am saved by Grace who rushes over for a hug. Guard allows me by after this...I toss my bag down and notice old clips of The Supremes are playing on the green room TV.
Heading in, I see One Away, John and Jackie and in a moment we head to the front of the stage, which has, for the first time ever, a bicycle rack barrier. I seem to remember an issue last year. The band has to actually enter and exit thru the crowd and step up on the stage. There is no "side" stage, it just kinda pops backward out of the wall. Early on, at Grace's request, it gets pushed to about a foor away from the stage.
The red spot lights played havoc with my camera. And as you look, no, I did NOT capture a halo. If I had, this would be posted at The Vatican News. And I was so close to the stage that flashes are not appreciated, so I put it away...
I forgot my earplugs in my haste to pack. And while I rarely use them, I need them tonight. I know it from the get go. My ears hurt. Years ago at The Paradise, Grace said "If it's too loud, you're too old". Well, I'm not too old, but my ears are. The volume drives One Away..away...after the first song, but I want to stay and hear "Try" up close. It is a struggle, and I am hanging on. I have never left a front row position. Hell, I won't even drink any water (!) But tonight is the first time. It's too loud upfront. I am tall (ok, big) and I know that it will be noticed when I leave, and I hate that. But I must. To save what precious eardrums I have. Reluctantly, I head back by the sound board for the BONUS of, HEY!, there's airco back here!!
This is a rowdy night on stage and off, frat house I Kappa Keg in action, and indeed, some guys tempted to give it a go are manhandled right out of the Box during the encore.
Post show, interesting little scene by the trellis..young kid, turned away..."I'm a 5th generation islander, and there's always a gate. There's always a gate keeping me from where I want to go. And him, him, and him, (pointing to security) they're all islanders too". It was like security were black men working for the plantation owner. Or that "islanders" have a special, unalienable right to go "back stage". (ED. NOTE We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness...AND TO PARTY LIKE A ROCK STAR, MOFO!!) I was waiting for him to start crying. Jackie, John, and I just listened to him, stunned.
Matt was able to get his moped started after Ben showed him a little trick, and before you knew it, it was lights out at 3 AM. I can't stay this year, and I bet the volume will be dialed in night 2. Up and out by 8, my stroll to the ferry had numerous photo ops.
Day 2 of the 2009 run at the Chicken Box was foggy and overcast. (Kind of like my head after the first night.)
Locals might call it a "real pea-souper" or a "smoky southwest".
Either way, it took a two hour nap for me to recharge and make it out again.
Minus TH1, whose departure we knew about, and carrjo,who was conspicuously absent without explanation, Jackie and I grabbed our spots on the rail at about 10:30. (John, we hope everything is OK at home.)
The band looked amazing, dressed to the nines. The boys were wearing collared shirts and Benny and Scott sported snappy vests.
Cat was elegant, with her hair neatly up and a beautiful slinky black cocktail dress.
Grace wore an off the shoulder silk dress and PURPLE VELVET SHOES!
I managed to last three songs up front until I had to move back and get away from the ringing in my ears.
The sound was much better tonight, with the feedback problems solved and the volume turned down a bit.
The setlist was a bit disapointing with basically the same lineup as Monday. The only addition was Stop the Bus which Benny and Scott proceeded to tear to shreds, reminiscent of the "Guitars That Destroyed the World".
I made it back down front to hear White Rabbit and scooted out a bit early during NBTW.
Grace made sure to give big props and thanks to the owners and staff of the Chicken Box, saying that every year was better than the last.
After a remarkable four year run here, I'm afraid that we might have seen our last Nocturnals show on Nantucket.
Have fun on that other island tonight.
Let's hope for some more northeast dates this fall.

Sitting here on the Inter-Island Ferry with John. He missed this show last night due to leg cramps - unheard of - John never misses a show! Guess who else is on the ferry --???? Set List Update - While they were doing Watching You, something happened with Grace's guitar and it wasn't working, so they didn't do Paris next. They skipped to Stop the Bus and NBTW, then they did Paris, Try and Sweet Hands for the Encore.

It's so hard to work on this beautiful day in CT, after living like a Rock Star for 3 days and 3 nights!
So many great moments packed into such a short time. Highlights of course, are the personal moments. Talking to the band - with Scott on Monday, long talk with Matt on Tuesday (who, much to my surprise said Hi to me first), and then seeing all of them on the boat and having an all-too short one-on-one with Grace. Never sure if what I say is right, I am not one to shy away from communication, but I do try to respect the band's privacy and space. I just hope they don't think I'm crazy!
Nice to have my friend Mary meet me off the ferry, even though she couldn't go to the shows, I had dinner with her Monday, and saw her each day I was there. She and her husband own a B&B on Nantucket, at which I stayed last year, but found a room for

Another victory for MapQuest!...delivered me to the heart of Brooklyn, no prob
My last appointment was in the Worcester area ending around 11:30, so that was a great starting point for the trip to Prospect Park. Changing into, well, shorts and a tee shirt in Sturbridge, traffic is ok on a Friday early exit. Sure, the usual construction hangup near New Haven, and slow thru Stamford, but other than that it's a reasonable cruise. I have never been to Brooklyn, never crossed the ($5.50 each way) Whitestone Bridge, never knew that Brooklyn is actually on Long Island.
And it's that bridge that causes the most delay, headed south on the Hutchinson River Parkway. I'm amazed at the number of people that don't have a FastPass to get thru the tolls. What's your problem?? Get with the program, it doesn't even cost anything. But before you know it, I'm on city streets, looking for Flatbush Ave.
Traveling up Flatbush, ahead I can see a crown of trees, and all of a sudden I am at a major rotary for the entrance to a grand, magnificent park. While not quite as big as Central Park, it is major. Finding a spot right on Prospect Park West, adjacent to the bandshell, I take it. I should have at least driven around the perimeter of the park, but I opt for the bird in the hand. The difference with Manhattan and Central Park, these are not high rises.
I enter the park, and head for the tent to scope it out. The stage faces an area of VIP seats, then GA seats, and then lawn headed up a hill, encircled by a 4 ft fence. Fence serves basically to contain alcohol, and funnel folks thru the gates where a $3 donation is collected for the free show. Behind the stage are "comfort stations" and an extensive playground, filled with exuberant kids in fountains & sandboxes, and on swings and playstations. Walking up the exterior of the fence, it ends at a paved road, and today, at least, it is closed to vehicular traffic. Going down the slope on the othere side of the road, there is a large field, with about 6 softball fields. Finding a luxurious patch of grass, I lie down, like many others in sight, to relax and perhaps bank a little sleep for a long night ahead. And stay there until the boom of opener Jones Street Station's sound check. Judging by the volume of noise lying there, on the other side of a ridge, I think I'll need earplugs tonight. Recognizing the futility of sleep at this point, I walk back over and around the venue, before exiting the park and exploring the side streets.
A canopy of trees makes 11th St. a shady oasis of brownstones. This must be a high rent district. Walking around the block, there are little markets, laundromats, bars, and restaurants. SO much nicer then I expected. I guess when I think of NYC, anything not Upper East Side is Hells' Kitchen...
After a while, I head into the venue, go thru the gates, and look for Michael, who finds me. I head down and visit with the MJ Fam and Keri, grab a bite and watch opener Jones St Station. This really is Brooklyn night, as they, as well as Deer Tick, are Brooklyn based, as is Noc Catherine Popper. After JSS, I head to nab a good seat still not taken and Deer Tick takes the stage. For me, it is a set memorable only by the marriage proposal by the lead singer to a woman who had just joined him to sing "if you go to jail, I got the bail." By the look of mischievousness in his eyes. It looked like that might be a good plan. He asked her to remove her left boot, took off her sock, and slipped a ring on to what is now called, I guess, her ring toe.
Ok. Grace Potter, future Supreme Court Justice? Well, let's just file that in the "anything's possible" file. Along with a meteor strike wiping out humanity. I bring this up only because it pays to have friends in high places..but Who Knew? The Senior Senator from New York ambled out at this point, grabbed a microphone and a spotlight and said...and I quote..."We're celebrating two great women today. Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Grace Potter....and I Love 'em both!"
The Nocs take the stage, lookin' sharp. Grace in a flouncy lawn green wrap-y unit, and Cat in a tight, leather like wrap of of a color I can't describe due to the stage lights and sportin' some serious kicks. The guys look ready for a night on the town, as well. And everyone has a moment tonight. I am lucky to nab my favorite spot, and take a few pics. Shoulda just clicked away, and I woulda, had I known security was gonna shut down cameras after two songs.

Grace is in fine voice throughout, and encore White Rabbit gets a sultry dance on the perfectly lit stage.
That is the night as the house lights come up, and thoughts turn to getting to Brooklyn Bowl.

Mapquest pulls me there, though I have my doubts..really thru a neighborhood and into an industrial area with plenty of parking. I pull to the curb and lean back for a few minutes, it is early and I know I am ahead of Scott, Benny and Matt. Ready to head in, I have my first of 5 "flinch" moments. As I grab the door handle, I am startled by a car backing up at a very high rate of speed. I nearly jump into the passengers seat as I am certain he is going to sideswipe me. If he had been about 5 seconds later, my door would have been open, one foot out and on the ground, and he would have slammed into the door and likely amputated my left foot. I probably woulda missed B & L....
Shaken, I decide it would be uncool to walk in lugging a camera to this hipster Brooklyn hangout. Like I should care...
This is a brick 2 story building and a short line has formed for an ID check by a doorman at a rope. The fellow in front of me is disappointed that his under 21 grandson can not be admitted and they turn away. I go past into an "alley" about 10 feet wide and 40 feet long, brick walls on both sides and smokers benches along one wall. Entering thru the door is an open lobby area, stair up to rest rooms along the right wall. There is bar area right here and to my left is a large open area with 16 ten pin bowling lanes running
perpendicular along the right side. In other words, from here, I am not looking down the lanes, I am looking across the lanes. In the left corner is a huge TV, and I'm shocked too see Sox-Yankees still on. No score bottom of the 12th? Yikes. I lean against a railing and watch the game and the girls. There is a sunken dance floor that runs along the whole back wall and an open stage at the far left corner. Basically, the dance floor is about 16 bowling lanes wide, if you follow my schematic. This is one cool joint, and I want one in Boston. Every lane has a large flat screen at the end of the lane above the pins. Half have the ball game on, and half have an old movie. At the head of every pair of lanes are tufted leather couches facing each other. Electronic scorecards are overhead every lane. Did I say this is one cool joint? There is no cover, and Blues and Lasers are gonna play. And when they finally do take the stage, and the ball game is over, their performance is beamed to the huge TV and the screens over every lane.
LED spotlights are great and I regret leaving the camera. And today I regret not taking the time to go get it, because they were good conditions.
The band comes out and leans into Who do you think you are. I wonder how they will connect with this drinking crowd, but the floor fills in and they have got their attention. Benny is much more animated, as he has a lot more room, both musically, and on the stage. It is a compelling performance all around, but I am really thinking of how I am going to exit. I want to be in Harvard Square by 8:30, so I plan to drive and then rest-stop-rest as needed before heading directly to Cambridge.
I say goodbye to Fam MJ and Keri and head out at 1 AM. And it is drunk driver central. Next hour in NYC & vicinity finds four more flinches, when three cars and a motorcycle pass me on either side going at least 20 MPH faster and then cut so hard back into my lane that I am sure my reaction is the only thing that keeps me from being hit. Four different times! There are cops out, and I do pass one car pulled over, young driver sitting, handcuffed, on the guardrail. I am certain he has no clue of how much this is gonna suck... Makes me wish I was a cop in an unmarked...like shooting fish in a barrel..
I make it to the last rest stop in CT on I-84, and lean back at 3:45 for about 2.5 hours of sleep. And I make it to Cambridge with plenty of time to stop at Mac's near Harvard Stadium, for coffee, before my meeting. The couch felt nice yesterday afternoon before leaving to see Derek Trucks at Lowell's packed Boardinghouse Park.
To say that this venue is perfect is an understatement. What a gem of a venue - it seats 300 and every seat really is a good one. Up on the mezzazine Gary, Carolyn and I enjoyed a rare back of the house night of GPN an it was a treat. Had my own personal dancing space, and todd - you would have been proud of me - dancin my fool butt off up there!! Dinner and drinks were also served up there making for a total feast of the senses.
Loved it.
The Theater and Bistro really serve up an fine evening of music and food - and they have a good catalog of bands lined up - check it out if you can.
The music tonight was absolutely stellar - and this after the late long night in Brooklyn!! They really brought it - Cat might have been tired because she didn't flash that dazzling smile she has as much as usual - but nonetheless, everyone played their hearts out and the energy in that room was awesome. Grace said something about she thought this was a seated show, but she saw a few people already up on their feet (raising my hand high!!) so - she shouts - EVERYBODY STAND UP. Stand up they did -and rocked the night away.
One Short Night was fun to hear again - and Medicine came out to play too - and it's amazing how many people already seem to know the words to that one. But for me - hearing I Shall Be Released - and the hush that came over the crowd - pin drop could be heard up in the balconey! And then Grace belting out Try with a fervor and a frenzy that sure would have made Janis more than proud.
Loved seeing my sis of course, and travelled down with Jay and Nancy making the long ride much more enjoyable, and shared some pre-show time with Chere and Art Tournet - just love those two! Inside we met John and Jackie sitting down in front. We left shortly after the show, chatting with Benny for a few minutes out front, and headed back on the 2.5 hour back to VT - long late night- but so worth it.

Jan - Beautiful venue, I agree! And right here in CT (about an hour drive) - an area of the state that I don't get to often. Gorgeous area, with rivers, campgrounds, antiquing, huge old churches - got to go back (perhaps this Fall)! Talked to Benny after the show about that long night before. I think all but Benny took off pretty early last night, for a couple days off.
Was talking to the owner of the venue (who fyi did not have other investors, this is his baby) -- he wants to bring them back for 2 nights in a row. I was surpised at the lack of advertising for this show, originally they had someone else slated, and the owner said that it is because he had been talking to the band, but they hadn't committed and when they did, he had 4 1/2 weeks of promotion only. And, still, it sold out! He was a happy man!
When did they play One Short Nite before - was it Bennington?
Also there last night was Heath, from the boards, and my friend Peter (my convert), who brought 3 GPN virgins (now converted).

From what I know from conversations with both Matt and Benny, they (I think Hollywood Records) are so happy with the new configuration, and "Medicine", that they want to do "more." Word is that the band will go back to LA in October to lay down some new tracks, and that Grace has a list of new material, and is in a creative funk!
Matt says that eventually, when things settle down with this Rock and Roll flow, Grace will get back to her soulful music because that is where her heart is, even perhaps, re-recording something from Original Soul.

Thank you snowbird . . enjoyed your recap 'muchly'.
Especially liked this __ " But for me - hearing I Shall Be Released - and the hush that came over the crowd - pin drop could be heard up in the balcony! ". The song can have a mesmerizing effect when it is done with true feeling and Grace certainly brings that quality to her music.
