And I can't stop looking at the picture in the RS article. So glad that Bob Ludwig has mastered this album. It's a guarantee that the sonic portion is covered.

The country fans might echo the chorus - Oh No, Oh No, I Won't Go Back There No More! I hope I'm wrong. Sorry guys, I love GPN - been to over 30 shows, but this song is not doing it for me. Just listened a 3rd time - the end of the song is better than the beginning or middle.

I like the new song....I think it is hip and I like the sound. I luv near the end when Grace's voice totally shines. I can hear the longer concert version already in my head!!! Not sure if they will rock out as an opener though w/ the Kenny Chesney tour. GPN feeds off the crowd and not sure the country crowd will be there to inspire them.

Re: March 22 - Never Go Back

Sounds more like pop than anything.......not doing it for me either....yet.....give it time. Grace tends to massage these songs a bit as they begin to play them. When they first played Paris it didnt do it for me either but look at it now. The only difference is we had about a year to hear Paris played live and developed before it hit a CD......this is the opposite so I'm wondering just how much it will change. Wonder who's singing the backing vocals??

I'm going to reserve judgement. I can hear this reworked live, and as long as they go nuts on us, they deserve something that might get commercial airtime. And, unpopular though it might be to say, I kinda like it!

It's certainly "poppish," but go back and listen to "Tiny Light" from the studio and pull up any of the live versions; they are not even the same song!

Re: March 22 - Never Go Back

    from the Rolling Stone piece

When Grace Potter and Auerbach wrote the song, they really intended just to play around with the equipment in the studio. "Dan's studio is a sex shop for gear pervs," says Potter. "I found a tiny old Casio that reminded me of my first-ever keyboard and started playing. He jumped on and started fucking around with the rhythm track, and we wrote 'Never Go Back' within the first hour of being in his place," she explains. "We weren't thinking, 'Let's write a big hit single.' It was more like, 'Let's geek out with some weird gear and see what happens.' I'm very glad we did."

Markeb, I've decided I kinda like it too .. the image Grace painted of how it was written has a lot to do with that.
It's not a song that I'd gravitate to normally, but I wouldn't skip it in someone's playlist either.

Sounds like they had fun creating it .. the song is fun ( is there a theremin? ) .. The Black Keys is an excellent & very popular band and Dan Auerbach's involvement will get attention .. and I can live with it.

Now give us one of the songs Grace wrote on her own please.

ETA .. I love the art work but the imagery is making me crazy .. I know I've seen the bird figure before - or something very like it - but can not remember where/what. Anyone have an idea ?

Markeb, it's funny...I actually listened to the studio version of "Tiny Light" tonight, long before I read your post, and thought the exact same thing. I hadn't listened to that version in forever, and you nailed it, its not even the same song. It will be interesting to hear what they do with this live. The second half of this song has some amazing, trippy guitar stuff going on. Listen on headphones and you'll hear it. I can hear them go nuts on this live toward the end.

The first listen of this didn't do it for me, but I've been listening a lot, and I really, really like this song. Definately different, and pop-ish...almost disco if you ask me, but I think it's really cool. I like it a lot and can't wait for the rest of the record!

I hope you're being sarcastic. Because unless Matt is also the name of the drum machine on this track than... It doesn't sound to me as if human Matt was even in the same state when this was recorded.

I know it will sound 10 times better live but this is just overproduced pop! I can only wish that the rest of the album will change my mind but I gotta say. I'm scared.
    "Vermonce" has arrived!

All I'd heard at that point was the radio broadcast and the beat mesmerized me .. I wasn't dissecting, just listening.
Yes, it's probably a drum machine. I was blown away by Matt at my first live show 4 yrs ago and think he can do just about anything .. so, if it's okay with you, I'll just stay here in my own happy bubble thank you .. i.e. I want it to be Matt - so it is Matt - in some fashion - if only as the "designer"
( note the writer credits on the press piece below )

Guess I have very stretchable borders - I don't dismiss any song just because of the genre box it gets crammed into - or because it's not what I expect from a band/artist - if I like it, I like it - and NGB continues to grow on me.
(and no, not like a fungus before someone goes there - lol )

«Psychedelich disco rock» is not normally my favourite genre, but this song is working for me – after some dealing with my prejudices about casio keyboards and synthetic drum beats (post trauma from the eighties). I love the way the band refuse to be restricted by the narrow frames the rock police will impose on them. You never know what you will get from these guys, and I admire their insistence on total artistic freedom. I look forward to the rest of the album with high expectations, anticipating to be further challenged in different musical directions. I see there will be string arrangements: How provoking!

Re: March 22 - Never Go Back

The POINT here in VT has put this single in some solid rotation, and I have to say, it's a good driving song, radio song, and to use TooFarNorth's word - an "earwig" song.

Not gonna critique it to death, I'll leave it to others. And would actually caution any critics to hold off and wait to hear it live. That is what the Noc's do best, and like others have said, this could be pretty wild and different live.

I'd also give kudo's to this talented crew for what seems to me to be them pushing their musical boundaries and being creative. Will everyone fall in love at first listen? Maybe Rabbit, maybe, but then maybe like me, it'll take a couple few listens.

Looking forward to what else The Lion, The Beast and The Beat holds in store for us.

If this sounds like I just paraphrased what Scandinavian said, well, Scandinavian actually said it better. Thanks Scandinavian.

Re: March 22 - Never Go Back

Dear Grace (and the rest of your AWESOME, amazingly talented, original band),
First of all, I love you. I've loved you since you toured in jeans and t-shirts, and have taken every chance to see you live since, umm, since "Nothing But the Water" came out. And I will continue to come to every show I can, because the band just gets better and better. But please (and I hate to make a recommendation of this sort), read the comments on YouTube for this "Never Go Back" - I dare say they reflect a whole heck of a lot of people's feelings about this song... And all I can do is echo the DMB quote used in one of the comments: "'Scuse me please, one more drink. Could you make it strong cuz I don't need to think... She broke my heart, my Grace is gone..." I'm staying as optimistic as I can about the new album, knowing what you guys are capable of.
