For all you fans making the trip, a local promoter just added another Friday night show which is scheduled to start 30 mins after the Wilco show ends. It's in a very intimate one screen movie theater right in the middle of downtown. Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes is the headliner. Openers are Dawes and First Aid Kit. Location: Jane Pickens Theater. Cost: $35.

and as of today...still available. Whats up with that?? Anyway.....I'm working Friday night so I cant go and Sat/Sun is sold out and my contacts have dried up so, I may be able to sneak in for the finale Sunday.
If you are going, get there early. If you drive, don't be in a big hurry to leave because you'll be in traffic for a while. Your best bet is to bring a bike.
Parking at the venue is a reasonable $12 in advance......and finding parking anywhere in downtown Newport to take the $10 RT trip water taxi, will run you minimum $15 for the day. It ain't cheap to come to Newport!!

(every superlative you can think of) weekend of music in spite of the three closing acts being Rain (Wilco), Holy%$&# Rain (My Morning Jacket), and More Rain (Jackson Browne).
Jackson & guests Sara Watkins, Dawes, Jonathan Wilson, Tom Morello, closed with Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns, and Money". The rain stopped as they played the opening chords and by "the sh*t has hit the fan" the sun had broken through. Thanks Warren!

Loved seeing some of my favorite GPN cast of characters there too - Heath, Trish, Dave, Keri, & Van (in order of appearance).
In western MA now for more Wilco at MassMoCA Tuesday night .. will post more when get home and have a real keyboard instead of my "android device".

Last minute announcement, as far as I can tell from friends in the know, found Deer Tick playing after the festival Sat night and again Sun night at the intimate Newport Blues Cafe. Rumor has it tickets sold out in 30 mins.......even friends with connections could not get tickets!!
Now on to the one and only New England summer appearance by the Tedeschi Trucks Band next Sunday!!! I believe NPR will be streaming this also.

It was great seeing Wally and his family at the Jazz Fest yesterday! Here's a couple pictures from the TTB show
If you want to be in the front row, you gotta be there early!! That’s the mantra I preached to my wife who reluctantly agreed to begin the day at 7am at the People’s Café for breakfast sandwiches. (Keri worked late the night before and met us later).
Working in downtown Newport has its perks. Like free parking and free water taxi tix!! We were first on the taxi at 8am arriving at 8:07 to find about 20 people in line ahead of us. Last time I was here was 2007 and the entry process/search was combined into one very slow activity. This time, the organizers did the search right off the boat and then scanned tickets so that at 10 am doors, everyone walked right in.
Found an area on the rail (fence) center left hoping for the afternoon shade. No shade from the stage this time,because since 2007, they have moved the stage back a bit and moved the reserved seats back about 100ft so center stage is now back in the GA ticketholders realm!!
Jazz to me is nice, sleepy music and I took advantage of this to doze under my beach chair with sunshade. Temps were mid 80’s 100% humidity but a nice fresh breeze made it bareable.
The 5 hour wait to TTB was well worth the sweltering conditions. Couple of waters, some ice tea and lemonade did the hydration trick.
At 5pm the TTB hit the stage with Keri’s and my fave “Everybody’s Talkin”…..that definitely woke up the crowd but also, curiously sent some of the strict jazz aficionados to the exits…..that was their loss!!
If anything, this band keeps getting better. Even better from Grenwich. Susan and Derek were both sweating and playing with passion. Susan got a bit pissed when, because of wet hands, she missed an ending verse during Bound for Glory, then missed the beginning of the next verse. She looked at Derek who just shrugged it off, then turned to her Dad and kids up in the stage gallery. Her Dad just nodded and smiled and Sophia waved and gave her a big smile. This got her back on track and she didn’t miss anything for the next 2 hours!!
Great sweltering afternoon of music!!
Seen in the crowd: Heath. He got there about 11am and had a decent seat stage right but found some of his friends down front before TTB came
on, and basically had the “Van position”……front and center for Susan!! (As can be seen by his pics!)

Keri was getting text messages from unknown cell # commenting on the tunes as they were played. Come to find out it was our own Dana!!
