Neil Young, Red Rocks, and the World of the Rusties (slight spoilers)

(I am cross-posting separate reviews of MMJ and Neil Young to four message boards I follow and also sending to my concert pals.)

I'm not a Rustie because I'm not on the Rust list, but I don't think I've missed a Neil Young stop in Colorado since 1972. I am a Relayer though. Relayers is a US, UK and Canadian community of about 180 Who fans familiar to each other due to Who tour traveling and meet-ups in various cities. Just as there is a huge overlap of fans of My Morning Jacket and Pearl Jam, there is a similar overlap in demographics, grey hair and baldness among Who fans and Neil Young fans. A few of my Relayer pals are also Rusties. So the past two nights our contingent were the "Rusted Relayers". A couple of them, Lauri (Long Island) & Joyce (Boston), accepted my offer to crash at my home for the Neil gigs at Red Rocks, after first attending the tour opener in Albuquerque on Friday. Lauri made and distributed tie-dyed orange Rusted Relayer t-shirts. My friend Joyce was named Rustie of the Month for August. They have a traveling Rustie of the Month crown with a fancy hat box to to keep it in. Over time, the crown has had many baubles and buttons attached to it by past Rusties of the Month and they sign their names on the inside.. It's a pretty cool tradition, and sort of reminded me of the Stanley Cup. Joyce proudly wore her crown during the pre-show parties. Highlight of the shows went to Rusted Relayer Lauri however, more on that later. The Rusties are an amiable lot, as you would expect, and they were always busting out guitars and singing Neil tunes in the restaurants and hotel lobbies. I was happy to share their world awhile.

Both Red Rocks shows were sell-outs, and many My Morning Jacket fans stayed at least one night to catch Neil too. I found myself in situations to obtain tickets outside the venue both nights, and ended up paying $120 for a $60 (cheapest seats) ticket to get a friend in on Sunday. It was the toughest market for buyers I have ever seen at Red Rocks. I had to pay $80 to get myself in Monday, though I wound up on the 9th row in a sharing arrangement next to the sound board rope.

I have a few gripes about Neil in this review, and the first one is that he always has 100% reserved seating at Red Rocks. The traditional way is GA for the first 24 rows, then reserved 25-60, then GA again to the top. But with Neil you get these situations in which 5 people cram into 4 seats or couples share one seat. Fortunately if you are standing, the rows are wide enough to accommodate this, but dammit Neil, keep the front GA!

As far as the show itself, Neil being Neil, threw a curve and played six unreleased new songs each night. A couple of them were 20 minutes long. And, after sending a free copy of "Americana" to every ticket buyer, we only got one "Americana" song, in the second night's encore. The new songs were great and quick to like, and will be on an album to be released in October. They are probably on YouTube now. It was good to hear them again the second night to more fully appreciate them, but this leads to my next gripe: -- the identical set lists for the first three shows of this tour, except for one different encore song. Fine, play the new songs each night, but when a few thousand fans are going both nights to Red Rocks, lets change up the rest of the set lists. How hard can that be? I've been spoiled by Pearl Jam, My Morning Jacket and all the jam bands. Neil & Crazy Horse left a lot on the table.

If you want to see the set list go here.http://sugarmtn.org/year.php?year=2012. Then you can google the new songs on YouTube. or go here:
    http://consequenceofsound.net/2012/0...rn-in-ontario/

With the exception of one short solo interlude, this show was loud, raw and brutal. My friends told me after Albuquerque that it was like you just had "two hours of rough sex". Not a bad description. I'd have to go back to Soundgarden's assault to the senses a year ago to compare anything to it. Godfather of Grunge indeed.

My last gripe is this penchant Neil has for interminable endings to songs. One song's ending went from kind of clever, to ridiculous, to downright irritating in the span of ten minutes. It was more like Performance Art than music, and I mean no praise. He literally lost the crowd for a bit. It was one of the strangest interludes I have ever witnessed in 40 years of concerts. It was no fluke, he did it both nights. I will not describe it further..Another more interesting interlude was Neil's brief but potent interaction with my Rusted Relayer friend Lauri at the rail. For a few moments, they mind-melded. I have never seen Neil do this much intense interaction with a member of the audience.. I don't think Lauri even needed a plane when I took her and Joyce to the airport this morning.

I would sum up by saying this show is a solid B, but over the years I have seen better Neil/Crazy Horse concerts,

    Charles

Re: Neil Young, Red Rocks, and the World of the Rusties (slight spoilers)

    Thanks for the review Charles.

Neil is one of quite a few acts I really want to see when they come to DC this fall... if only I had enough money to see The Who, GPN eventually, a music festival I'm dying to go to AND Neil Young with Patti Smith. Unfortunately, as a high school student with just a summer job, I don't make nearly enough money and, as I'm sure you are aware, ticket prices are just getting more and more expensive, particularly with big-name stars. My parents splurged and bought two tickets to see Neil and Patti Smith recently but Ticketmaster canceled the order without telling them. So now the only way I can see em is if we spend another fortune for another pair of tickets--which isn't gonna happen.

Anyway, I'm really glad you enjoyed your experience. How did the crowd react to 20 minute new songs?
Also, are you planning to see the Who on the upcoming Quad tour? Were you ever on the Long Live Rock forum?

    nice write up Charles -

when we can't be everywhere at once, it's nice to get a window peek from someone more fortunate. Funny notes about the Rusties and Relayers. I think a modern day Tom Wolfe would have a wealth of material diving into the diverse fan subcultures of a lot of the groups out there.

thanks for the solid review Charles. my opinion as to the seating arrangements at Red Rocks has varied over the years, but its probably best set up how u describe it with the reserved section in the middle (unless they just make the whole place ga). i've only seen NY with CH once and it was actually the Greendale show at Red Rocks with Lucinda Williams which was totally nasty. our seats were pretty close for that maybe 20-30 rows out. for this fall i have decent reserved seats for MSG and ga/floor tix for the brand new Barclay's Arena in Brooklyn which was just built by Jay Z and the owner of the Nets basketball team. i might not go to both shows but probably will. while i'm big into all of NY's stuff, by far Crazy Horse is my favorite band he fronts. if u can find a better bass player than Billy Talbot i don't want to know who it is. don't spook the horse cheers

Thanks Charles! My buddy Seth Yacovone (another fine Vt. musician) went to one night for his birthday ... Then went to Ontario. I'll askim if he got 2 of the same shows. He's spending the day between going to Justin Beiber show!?! Not the concert ... Just gonna "check out the lot scene"! Told him he should make an "I need a miracle" sign to see how the JB fans roll 8*)

Gracefan, I had no idea you were in high school! When I was your age ('70-'72) I saw every band coming through Denver for free. I sold Cokes for Araserve at sporting events but for concerts I used my pass to hide in the restrooms until showtime.

The new songs are all quite good IMO and generally well received. But I noticed Neil is getting ripped pretty good in the Denver Post comment section for the ten minute ending to "Walk like Giants". He could have played Cortez, or Cowgirl or RITFW instead.

I haven't seen anything about a Webcast for Outlands Festival yet, so I doubt you will get to see Neil Friday. It's a shorter fest set too of course.

My Who forums have been Relayers and Odds n' Sods. I wish it wasn't so expensive, but make Quad your priority concert. You can tell your grandchildren you saw rock's greatest composer, Pete Townshend, perform his masterpiece. It's like saying you saw Beethoven perform his 9th Symphony.

Patti Smith is supporting Neil? That is cool. I forgot to mention Alabama Shakes. My desire to get in to see them forced my hand a bit in buying tickets. There is thread for them in here, maybe I'll post something there later.

i went to the Garden last night and it was a super heavy dose of the nasty! Crazy Horse was feelin it for sure! They played it like a Ragged Glory/Weld show. if someone told me i was in a time machine and it was 1993 or something, i definitely would have believed them. they threw it down in a serious way. at one point during the song "Fuckin Up" they got into this extended "your just a fuck up" vocal jam. then they played Mr. Soul. was crazy.

Thought of you when I saw Brooklyn Vegan's tweet this morning .. I'm guessing you missed Patti Smith's opening set (and for a really good reason !).

I saw half of Patti Smiths set, she was fantastic! Missed the first band Everest. MSG is only a 10 minute walk from Bryant park (or one subway stop)

Eric, thanks, looks like same set list the whole tour with small variation on encores. I see Crazy Horse is still doing the awful "stomp" tagged at the end of Walk Like a Giant although they may have shortened it to be a bit more tolerable.

I dunno, not one of their better tours IMHO.

I liked his book better than Townshend's though.

Lord, my blood ran cold and the hair stood up on the back of my neck with that exact same thought when I read Charles' comment.

Eric - acoustic for Roll Another Number finale? great choice to finish.

Re: Neil Young, Red Rocks, and the World of the Rusties (slight spoilers)

I caught the show in Boston on Monday night. Had high hope of finally hearing Hurricane after seeing Neil 10 times or so and striking out each time. Those hopes were dashed even before the show as I saw the setlists from the Canadian shows and they looked almost identical. Neil is Neil and he's pretty much going to do whatever he damn well pleases. (My wife still hates him from when he walked off stage during the second song at Merriweather Post Pavillion nearly 30 years ago and never returned, basically ending the show after 15 minutes because the crowd wasn't listening to him.) But, I knew all that going in. In fact, at a show a few years ago they wouldn't sell beer during the acoustic set because he didn't want people walking in and out while he was playing quiet music.

Anyway, I though he sounded good and I was reminded that his work with Crazy Horse is definitely my favorite among his various styles.

What's up with the extended song endings? Yes it's great to be a rock star, but that seems pretty narcissistic to me. Several friends complained about the new material, but that's why musicians tour...to promote the new release.

Patti Smith was a very pleasant surprise. I listened to some of her material before the show to familiarize myself with it and wasn't overly impressed, but she was outstanding live. I thoroughly enjoyed her set, especially the one long jam near the end. (Sorry don't know the name of that one.)

Roll Another was electric just like it sounds on Tonights the Night. Needle was the only acoustic song, played just like it sounds on Live Rust. the whole show was very much like those classic live albums. the Fuckin up>FU jam>Mr Soul at the end was almost like the bonus tracks

Also just want to say my comments are for one show not the whole tour. i am indifferent to the setlist as this is one of my all time favorite lineups, and im happy to hear whatever it is they are in the mood to play- as there is no way they could do all the songs i'd consider "favorites". always like to hear the new stuff as well. no issues with extended jams or endings, that is this bands version of improv and i am into the feedback/distortion. if they are feeling it, anything will sound good. especially in the Garden. also there have been some slight variations in the setlists, above and beyond just the encore. but im not here to defend Neil. the show i saw was fantastic. will probably wind up going to the one in Brooklyn on Monday. content enough to skip it, especially for Anais Mitchel at the Bowery Ballroom...but I already have the tix and still havnt seen the new arena, as the pre-season hockey game never happened thanks to the lockout.

also was pretty funny to hear Neil still call Ponch the "new guy" after 37 years. what does a guy have to do for a little job security haha.

one interesting fact about Neil Young (there are many)- in 2005 he was in New York and was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm after undergoing an MRI. He scheduled his surgery a week out and then traveled to Nashville, aneurysm and all-to record an entire album-then returned to New York for his brain surgery a week later. i remember seeing a documentary a while back where his band mates in the studio were kinda weirded out by the whole thing. they were like "he just sat there and was like yeah, the aneurysm symptoms are a pain in the ass, when we wrap up this sesh i gotta go back to NY for this brain surgery...so u want to double me up on those back up vocals?" and the guys are just like WHAT? and they could not understand how he was just sitting there 1000 miles away from the hospital recording an album, and there was no convincing Neil that the record could wait.

so good luck convincing him to shorten his new song by 10 minutes.

"It's like an Allman Brothers song, it never ends!" -Homer Simpson

OK, you are going to make me ask, what is the deal with my comment and this "Angel Emerald"?

Eric- your story about Neil's aneurysm is covered in his book in some detail, along with other afflictions he has dealt with in his life (polio, epileptic fits, bad back) Perhaps the most riveting part of the entire book is when he was in New York after the surgery and the vein in his leg they opened for the surgery kind of broke loose or something and he collapsed near his hotel elevator. Very harrowing, he almost died.

Other than the insufferable ending to Walk Like a Giant, I was into the new songs too, they are very good, and if you are going to see him once during the tour it's an OK show.

Neil will indeed "do whatever the hell he wants"! Just a few weeks ago ... Some good friends of mine did a Spankin' NY tribute! First set was all perty ... Second was Seth Yacovone (one of Vt's finest guitar players) put together a Crazy Horse set!?! It's awesome ... Check it out!?!
