Re: Thougths on the new record "Grace Potter and the Nocturnals"

and maybe I like This is Somewhere, with whatever bells and whistles you are referring to that I don't hear because the versions on the record are the same versions they play live, because the songs are WAY BETTER. in my opinion.

songs that Grace wrote herself. without the help of Baston.

now take your stick ....and stick it somewhere else.

I don't feel like you keep after be because you are curious. I feel like you are argumentative and are looking to prove me wrong. in pretty much everything I have to say. you were the one who wanted me to come on here and talk..and now every word I say you are challenging me. I am signing off....have a great day.

Come on now - of course I'm argumentative - that's not a piece of news to you is it? As I said, you don't like the record - cool. You've written lots and lots of words about why you don't. I challenged you on a few of your points and you're getting angry?

    ttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5BMQ-xpTog

There's no way I could "prove you wrong" - because you're not wrong. Your opinion is yours and it's valid. It can't be either right or wrong - same goes for mine. I listen to the record and hear one thing - you listen and hear something else. I thought we were having an interesting discussion - you think I'm harassing you.

Personally, I think the difference between NBTW and TIS was massive and the difference between TIS and this record is much less pronounced. "Ah, Mary", "Mr. Columbus", "Mastermind" - those are all simple, pop influenced songs. I think TIS leans more towards country and GPN leans more tours soul.

Another example why written words sometimes can be taken a diff way......

I can picture Mojo saying exactly what he wrote and also notice he had a little grin going on there too, so, I just think he was making conversation Amy........He likes to do that to stimulate us!!!

Please dont take him too seriously...he's harmless but and otherwise nice guy.

Come back Amy we all love you!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Thougths on the new record "Grace Potter and the Nocturnals"

in mho, this record kicks!!!! And, I feel that there is a live-show feel here, except for the banter of folks standing by the taper! Our ears may be constructed similarly but what we hear/how we process/what we want varies so that the reception/review of the same material can vary - I believe this is called subjectivity in writing - the objectivity is derived from facts - like how many tracks are on the CD and who wrote what...
Throughout the years, I have enjoyed every GPN piece - some a little more than the other - and this record is a keeper...especially when I see my grandchildren dancing to "That Phone" and singing the lyrics in their toddler voices...and when "Colors" can repeatedly give me chills...and when "Paris" rocks venue after venue...
A powerful album has been created!

    I don't think so Mojo!!

I think she'll be back.....She just doesn't "get" you sometimes, know what I mean???

I knew what you were doing but she interpreted that differently.......and isn't that what this thread is all about???
    Interpretation???

I love her passion even when I don't agree with her..........

I started playing catch up in the fall of 2007 and it was fascinating to work backwards from TIS. Admit to a soft spot for Original Soul but I like all of the albums in their own right - some of the songs more than others on each - but they are all keepers.

Love it . . Kired needs to catch his two singing GPN songs on video . . apparently Tiny Light is a favorite.

Sidenote: I've always enjoyed the point / counter-point of debating . . probably one of the most useful required courses I resented being forced to take.

Re: Thougths on the new record "Grace Potter and the Nocturnals"

SO I gave the CD a listen while running my errands today. Twice. And just like Snowbird said, as well as my good friend Bostonone, I like it more and more the more I hear it. Amy and I listened to the first few songs. And please, they ruined Paris with that background Ewwww, Ewwwww. Also, Grace's moans at the beginning of Medicine....OMG, I have to admit, I fast forwarded Medicine..twice. Just couldnt do it. But the rest of the CD is very nice. Even the two songs I am not big fans of (with the exception of Medicine/Policy Woman) Money and the Phone, arent so bad. The phone actually has a good beat. But Colors, is just beautiful. I really love Oasis. Low Road is another great song. Things I never needed is pretty. Really surprised me how much I do like the new CD. I do think my sister Amy knows music and is a better judge than myself. She is the one that turned me on to GPN. She is SICK that she feels the way she does but still loves the band. But I see K Cortez's point...as some of the songs on the CD sound EXACTLY like they play live. Thank goodness, Paris isnt one of them and doesnt sound like it does on the new CD with the Ewwww ewwwww.....ewwwww ewww. Cause that makes my ears want to curl up. And seriously, please bring back the Kaw Kaw.

Re: Thougths on the new record "Grace Potter and the Nocturnals"

I don't come on here to have a debate. If I enjoyed debate, I would have become a lawyer and not a travel agent. Nor do I enjoy being berated for every single point I make about my opinion. It's my opinion, and it's an opinion that is shared by many who either are too afraid to say it here or don't care enough to bother. No Mojo, I have never found you to be argumentative, but have found you to act as if you are a part of managment..policing the forums for anyone who might not be thrilled with the changes or with the new album. POKE them with a stick until they go away or succeed that they are wrong and you are right. I don't join forums for debate, and honestly can't stand people that feel it is necessary. let someone have their opinon. you state yours, I'll state mine, and we can agree to disagree.

as I said before, I'm not going around asking people to prove why they love the new album. I'm not asking anyone to show me how it is better than albums that have come before. You love it and that's great. I don't love it and it bums me out. but there isn't anything you can say that will change my opinion about it, and there isn't anything that you can prove that will show that I am wrong and you are right. so really..what the hell is there to debate?

Edited to add : It's totally cool that you're not a big fan of the record by the way. I'm not sure why I'm poking this with a stick - just curious I guess.
Interesting you said that. I texted Bostonone and asked him if that was a Yamaha keyboard but he said it was the Hammond B3. That song sounds exactly the same when they play it live but like you said, with the exception of the sound of the organ.

Tell us this isnt so. We are allowed to be honest about our feelings about the Nocturnals music here, arent we?

Evidenced by what exactly? Please show me where I "policed the forums" an suggested it wasn't ok to not like the record or disagree with something.

I get to have an opinion too.

YIKES PEOPLE - it's music - and we all can and will be passionate about our likes and dislikes. I get the message that Owllover feels picked on here, hoping we can all just agree to disagree about things without getting to upset at one another. Forums can certainly lead to debate, disussion and hopefully some enlightenment and enjoyment - but I really hope no one walks away feeling harassed - knowing most of you, I just don't think that's the intent.

    Forever the optimist . . .

Little clarification on my debate comment upthread . . debate is pretty much just another name for discussion. I've posted on a number of sites as I believe Amy has mentioned she has , and read on many others for quite a while now. Posted opinions / ideas / thoughts have always been open for discussion on any of them. The ground rules are pretty similar everywhere . . it is not okay to tell someone they can't have an opinion . . it is okay to question the opinion because . . well , that

Re: Thougths on the new record "Grace Potter and the Nocturnals"

I was disappointed with the record. For me, GPN were at their best with "Original Soul." Then still pretty good with "Nothing But The Water" and just downhill from there, though I know they are great live, and more credit to them, since I've heard bands make more of their money playing live shows than in album sales. I just wish they could get back to that orginal soul sound they had in '04. Songs like Crazy Parade and Bull in a China Shop - sultry and sweet, clever and catchy, not too demanding of one's attention, in a way that a person who speaks only here and there gets attention merely by not screaming for it. Potter has developed a good scream. She throws one in every few measures of this new album to remind us. I gave the new album 4 or 5 runs then shelved it.
