Not Exactly a GPN Story, but Sort of

Bumping the foot thread down ... I thought I'd tell a quick story for your amusement hopefully. Here goes ...

A few weeks ago I was having lunch with some coworkers I don't normally spend much time with. One of the guys is about 30 and relatively new to our group and during the course of the conversation he mentioned that he'd gone to school at St. Lawrence University. Not being one to have much interest in work talk, I was glad to see the conversation take a turn in this more interesting direction. As anyone with a GPN addiction would do upon hearing this news, I abruptly interrupted the conversation and asked, "Did you go to school with Grace Potter?"

Well, as it turns out, nice new guy did go to school with Grace. In fact, he explained that he was her RA at SLU and had written her up for unloading her band equipment in a no parking zone or some such egregious offense. While I was overjoyed to be having this unexpected conversation about my favorite topic at an office lunch, my coworkers were quite perplexed. Finally, someone dared ask, "Who is Grace Potter?" To which I quickly answered, "The best female rock and roll singer of all time." Duh.

While some might debate how I responded to the question, this is what I said and I do wholeheartedly believe it. Having never heard of Grace, the group became quite interested in how she could be the best female rock and roll singer of all time if they'd never heard of her, so I felt it my duty to enlighten them and explain that Grace is not only the best female rock and roll singer of all time, but GPN is surely the best rock and roll band of all time. They'd find out soon enough, I assured them.

In the course of this explanation I also let it out that I'd been to way more GPN shows in the past year or so than any middle-aged woman should admit to. The gentleman sitting next to me looked me in the eye with a bit of concern and said "That's crazy" and I could tell he didn't mean it in a good way. Nonetheless, I had their attention and everyone at the table had now heard of Grace Potter (and the Nocturnals, although the discussion had started with Grace and there remained most of their interest). In my estimation, this was turning out to be a very productive conversation.

Well, the talk eventually turned back to less interesting things like what my new colleague had done for work before joining us, so I thought it a good time to leave before it got too serious and caused me to drift off, as serious topics are known to do to me. Never one to pass up free food, I grabbed some cookies before starting my departure and returned to the table to say a quick goodbye. By this time, my coworkers were already looking at me a little strangely, but I thought it important to solidify their newfound musical knowledge by quizzing them and confirming their understanding. I must go, I said, but before I did, I had one question for them: "Who is Grace Potter?" To this they all answered in unison with smiles on their faces: "The best female rock and roll singer of all time."

"Very Good. My work is done here," I told them. And that it was.

(Footnote: I tell this story not to encourage debate over who is or is not the best anything, but rather for fun and to illustrate one successful method of leading our less enlightened brethren toward the land where musical goodness is determined by evaluating genuine talent and not simply by mindless acceptance of mainstream marketing. The gentleman who said I was crazy later told me he went back to his desk and watched GPN's White Rabbit video and loved it. A workday well spent toward the musical betterment of mankind, without a doubt).

Great story! The same scenario once took place in my favorite tavern (without the SLU connection), after explaining my rational to all the patrons, I was compared to a "teen pop star groupie", (I'm 54 years young!). The next time the same group was together in the establishment, the patrons all admitted to going home and googleing GPTN and spending countless time watching and listening on YouTube! At the next local concert Grace played in central NY, 8 of them went and had the time of their lives. On Dec. 9, GPTN will again play Syracuse, and already 12 of my friends are going to the concert that night!
Word of mouth trumps record company hype every time, in my opinion!

yeah Trish that is a classic story, luv it. and the guy giving Grace a parking ticket for unloading her instruments in the no parking zone, priceless!

i hype the band up as much as i can, a lot of my friends have heard of GPN and they are into it on one level or another. ive caught some ears thats for sure...funny though, recenlty everyone has been asking me..."what song is that on your phone, who is that"
i guess my 15-second "that phone" ringback tone has gotten a lot more attention than my rambling praises, which are typically much longer than 15 seconds

Trish - love your anecdote! A few months ago, while planning a class reunion over facebook and the phone, a former classmate and I were chatting/making plans. Near the very end of our conversation I mentioned GPN - he had never heard of them. A day or so later, I got a facebook message - this friend was raving about the music and had "gluttonized" over the many videos out there...then, he turned his many friends and family members onto GPN! I believe that this is why the band has been touring their hearts out, all these years - one, by one true fans are won!
    You are a super fan!

Certainly word of mouth is helping, but it's driving me crazy that GPN can't get that break-out hit on mainstream FM radio. I hope Medicine is finally the one.Tiny Light is still hanging out on KBCO's top 20 where it has been since summer. There must be a DJ there keeping it in the rotation. I just wish those programmers who control most of the country's FM play lists would give GPN more love. I don't know how that works exactly. But I know this would help:

Breakout hit > Saturday Night Live > Bigger Gigs > No more Who is Grace Potter & the Nocturnals

my money says exactly what happened to Michael Franti will happen to Grace, as soon as she stops scheduling gigs and touring a radio station will pick up Paris or one of the others off the GPN album, other stations will immediately follow, and the band will have to go right back out on the road. it could even start with "that phone" on a country station. which would not surprise me at all after the Kenny Chesney song, which by the way i did not realize was the TITLE Track to his new record...anyway that has propelled GP into another stratosphere of people just knowing her name and her voice. there is probably not a single country music fan in in the US that doesn't know who Grace Potter is right now. Id say that is a household name at this point, for any country music fan.

and not for nothing this band is killing it in the southeast right now, and that radius is spreading rapidly. the DC show has been sold out for at least a week, or possibly a lot longer, and the show isn't until next fri. that recent run in the carolinas and VA sounded crazy and they are going right back to Tennessee for halloween. i am leaving out a lot of other cites/gigs that were sold out or went very well. im in NY and Charles in Co so the vibe is completely different, but there is no question they are in very high demand in the southeast-mid atlantic region. Charles i think 4 now they are making the most of their chances in CO, although in the future they should really try to play weekend gigs if at all possible in Denver and the ski towns. but their 2010 visits to Denver, Boulder, Red Rocks and beyond went very well and they were on TV 2-3 times while out there.

. . . did not realize was the TITLE Track to his new record . .
just to clarify : Chesney's album's title is " Hemingway's Whiskey " and there is a track by that name . . the song Grace did with him is You and Tequila

re: promotion . . I'd like to have an updated version of the 'business cards' that were around when I first got involved
could have used a fistful of them in Fredericton - happily I had a pen so could write website info on people's tickets

I used to pass those cards out everywhere not just at shows . . the last one I had went to a bored dad with an iPod in the boys dept at JC Penney's in the Portland Mall
it's amazing how many ways one can find to segue into a music conversation - in that case they were heading to Burlington for vacation

eric . . I saw a review that said the duet was Hemingway's Whiskey and that's probably the one you saw . . if I hadn't already heard You and Tequila I'd probably have mentally stored the track name too

ok 2FN, thank u. i guess im not crazy after all. er, well...ya know...apples and oranges, whatever.

what i read said that and also specifically said it was the title track. i am familiar with the song "You and Tequila" but i guess not quite enough to realize the reference to "Whiskey" was the incorrect one. it is escaping me where i read that, but one thing that was clear for sure, it was praising Grace Potter. very much so. said something about Grace touring with KC (just to sing one song every night?) to which she replied "the focus right now is on my band, The Nocturnals"

Actually, Billboard shows a song called "The Boys of Fall" as the single from the Chesney album, currently #5 on the country chart.
