GPTN opened for Derek Trucks Band at the Ridgefield Playhouse, a sweet little theater in a beautiful town. Her set consisted of:

At start of NBTW she told the crowd "Hey, we're a warmup band and we're supposed to warm ya up!! So everybody, UP!!" and most everyone did. I had snarfed over to the second row center by this point. My first row, last on the right, was seriously visually impaired..Grace used Kofi's keyboards, set on the right, and out of sight, to me.

Grace joined DTB for his final song of the set Spirit in the Dark, She wailed and had a good time.

I spoke with Tamera, a photographer that has shot TONS of DT shows and she said it was the first time that she had seen an opener asked to sit in, on the first night

The venerable Paradise on Commonwealth Ave in Boston was SOLD OUT last night for Grace and the boys first headline gig there. The sell out happened about 15 minutes after doors opened, and as I entered I heard two different groups, disappointed, saying they had driven from Falmouth (on Cape Cod) and New Hampshire.

It caught me off guard, because I was without ticket myself. I had bought 20 tickets to spread the word, and one son and his girlfriend were LATE (1 PM SAT) responders, and so instead of having one extra, I was short one. (Good news, 18 of the 20 were virgins-word spreading mission accomplished).

As I waited inside near the empty merch table for people to show up, a woman looked at me and said "anybody need an extra?" and I accepted and she gave it to me and started to walk away. I grabbed her shoulder and asked her "Don't you want any money?" No, it's cool, she said and started to walk away again. I grabbed her shoulder again and said " thanks, you gotta hear this. I bought 20 tickets and gave most of them away, and I didn't even have one for myself. This is KARMA!!. MY NAME IS EARL !!" She had a good laugh and wandered into the club.

I missed most of the opener, but caught the last three songs by Will Dailey and the rivals. His final song? Nothing other then John Lennon's "Instant KARMA" !!
I'm gettin goosebumps...

Grace took the stage close to 10:30 to deliver an ambitious set that ran WELL over two hours. There were several songs that she introduced as new. Some of them are new in the sense of not on a CD, and some of them were new in the sense of one day old. "Skinny Woman" was brand new, played on a guitar I hadn't seen before with the "fuzzy strap I just love" said Grace, and played with a glass slide- first time she said she had ever performed slide as well. Four songs were first timers for me. One of the things I love about them, always seem to be new material mixed in and different versions or opens, witness Bryan's standup solo to open up "Toothbrush"

Scott is indeed clean shaven ( jen likes the beard better) and was rippin it up all night. Matt cranked enough that after the show he had his left hand wrapped with some ice- from hittin the cymbal so hard with his open hand. And Bryan took some more good natured ribbing from Grace about drinking and the ladies. (He 'lost time") and responded with rock solid work taking care of the bottom line, actually mounting one one of the speakers before leaping back on to the stage. He needed a spotlight!!

Grace's mom Peggy was testifyin on my right, right down front and uber-fan Kelly (down from Burlington, VT)was spotted just behind her.

Grace encored with a WILD version of Gumbo Moon which she opened with the first several lines of The Animals 1965 "House of the Rising Sun" Like I said, great example of why I love this girl. Some of my friends would have been delighted by the complete version of this, but then they never would have heard Grace Gumbosize a song and ask "Can you take me little higher" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Final song, with a story as she got tuned up and connected, lamented the need to travel in vehicles without a bathroom, and how natures call sometimes get answered with a can, and well, you know bumpy it can get on the road...the aptly titled ummm, errr, lets see, ahem, "Piss on Your Hand" Hey, I just report the news!

Great night, a long night indeed, no break like the set list contemplated. I hung around for a bit after and my sons and girlfriends got a chance to meet all but Matt, and Grace was really enjoying the back stage scene. she said to me, "Van, this is like my first VIP scene" because all the peeps that were squished into the Paradise tiny back stage hallway and lounge. It was 1:45 in the morning when we stepped out into the cold Boston night, warmed by Grace Potter and The Nocturnals...

Driving North from Massachusetts the Green Mountains are brown in the Southern part of the state. When I hit white River Jct, everything is white, this is more like it, but this is just a little snow belt and the valleys turn brown again heading up 89. But we blessed with a wonderful sunset over the Green Mountains..

I find my way into the little metropolis of Barre, and head to the Opera House. The van is right by the door and the venue door is unlocked. what's a fan to do...

I head in on the premise of getting a show time but no one is around and I head upstairs and hear sound check. I head up to the balcony area to be unobtrusive, but that is where the offices are and as I round the corner, I hear someone coming down so I retreat...

Wafting from inside is a song, unrecognized, and sounding great. I see Bus Mgr Jen on the way down and she is excited about a new set of 4 different T-shirts that has just arrived, but also bummed about a bug that has also arrived and caught her, delivering aches and a sore throat. It is going around. She confirms a new song being worked on, and I leave to find a room for the next 2 nights, which I do at the Hilltop Inn, a cancellation of an extra room by the guy in front of me. whew.

Anyway, I get back to the Opera House and the opener, the Mad Mountain Scramblers, a bluegrass quintet (5?) is on the stage. My roots are not in bluegrass, but they sound good. Pretty unusual, the standup bass is the lead, along with 2 guitars and 2 mandolins. They end with an excellent version of, believe it or not, Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wann Have Fun"

At the break, the crowd refreshes and I run into uber-fan Kelly, & her friend Rebecca that are there as part of a group of ten. Way to go! They are seated in the last row, but not for long.

The Opera House was restored in late nineties after 50 years of neglect, and is a local gem. Nice wraparound balcony in a 600 seat venue. Full stage, four feet up, with an area about 10 feet deep tight in front that is secured by the velvet rope..

The stage is graced by a carved owl, Potter property, in front of the mic and monitor, and a 3 foot high Kermit hanging off the right speaker banks..

Grace takes the stage and delivers Nothing But the Water to a hushed and rapturous crowd, before cranking into the full song, after which, she invites the crowd to come down and fill the area in front. which they do, quickly I might add. Kelly makes and down..."...and the Last Shall be First"

The set is 16 songs plus encore. Tonight there is no bass intro to "treat Me Right" but is segues deliciously into "Toothbrush".

Special highlight is "Lovers Lost and Found" with Scott searing the guitar and it morphed into "You GottaMove" Tonights version of "Mystery Train" features piano work that I have not heard before on this song.

"2:22" tonight is the start of a three song set that was without rythmn, Matt and Brian leave the stage. Grace sings with a hand held mic, first time I recall seeing that, as well.

Next up is "Apology" Grace solo on the piano, oh God I love that song. First time I really heard the lyrics.

and then "skinny" solo slide guitar to complete the solo portion of the show..

Folks, those of you that are going to a lot of shows realize what I am about to say. We are really privileged to be watching a talent develop and grow, quickly, right before our eyes.

Encore "Piss on Your Hand" had the whole Mad Mountain crew up on stage as well.... I can't believe a review I read that called this a Love Song.. hah

From her lips to your ears department:

"last time I was on this stage I had point shoes on"... does a ballerina twirl with arms extended..."didn't have armpit hair back then"

on lack of snow this winter..."i'll talk to God about that..."

fan asks how DM Cruise went: "not so good. For Dave Mathews sake, I'm not gonna tellya"

Fashion Note:
Spaghetti strap low cut "little black dress" with a pleated front from, oh about the bellybutton down.
Double strand necklace of large blue tourquise like stones with a matching multistrand bracelet all set of by calf high western cowboy boots...

That's all I got time for right now, will check in later with after show and off day (hint, I am writing this at the Joslin Library in Grace's hometown of Waitsfield) activities. Got another destination today...

I'm back from my excellent adventure to continue my earlier post..

After the show last night I got something of interest from everybody..

Matt: His hands had healed nicely from the Paradise show (he had it wrapped up afterwards) It was cut and bruised. Turns out he pretty regularly hits his hand, on the upbeat, on his hi-hat cymbal and it can result in tenderness or worse. He said a great show is when he doesn't even notice it and that "The Paradise was a top 5 show"

Scott: said at one point his family lived in a pretty isolated area, generators and everything. I dubbed him the Bode Miller of New England Music. Except Scott delivers...

Bryan: Has a new bass , a '67 Fender Jazz that he bought in Cincinatti when they were out with DTB. They were in this pretty heavy duty shop and he and Derek were both eyeing the same guitar. Derek asked him to play it a little so he could hear the guitar and the amp and Brian critiqued it for him. He thinks Derek knew he really wanted it, because Derek ended up buying a '73 for his home studio, leaving the '67 for Bryan to grab...
Bryan confirmed that they had been working on a new song "with a kinda Coldplay feel" and it might come out Friday.

Grace: Had three new T-shirt designs and was surprised that her favorite was not the best seller. I told her it was really a Friday night T-shirt and would sell the most to a Friday night crowd. she liked that; I'm sure we'll be checking after the show tonight...

Leaving the venue, had a real nice conversation with Mr & Mrs P., certainly proud of their daughters accomplishments and are enjoying the ride.

I told them my off day today was going to be a Potter Pilgrimmage to sacred places, and I was gonna buy a Peggy Potter bowl. She beamed...Well, pilgrimmage and sacred might be a little heavy for this but they will do for now.. and off I went to the Hilltop Inn

A strange noise awoke me this AM at 5:30. Took me a minute to figure out it was snowplow on the road outside the motel. AArgh..

A fairly consistent snow blew as I drove down to Grace Central in Waitsfield, passing a car skidded off the road just north of town. First stop was by "Potterville" and then on for a cup of coffee at Three Mountain Cafe. After that, I headed for Artisans Gallery where Grace's mom displays her beautiful hand painted bowls. After much deliberation, I selected a medium size with serving pieces. Beautiful..

Then off to Easy Street cafe for lunch where Grace hand painted the ceiling mural...kinda like the Sistine Chapel of Vermont music, except it has no angels in the sky.

After that, I stopped off at the place where I have a timeshare in the Summer. Doreen wanted to know what I was doing up there now. When I told her, she said, "Oh, I've known Grace since she was little" Seems like everybody in town says this....

A stop at the library got me online to post, but, finally, I had to leave town to get to my final stop on the tour. Any guesses?

If you guessed the Haybarn Theate at Goddard College, recording site of "Nothing But The Water" you are correct..

Goddard is a classic small Vermont college, about 45 minutes North of "Potterville" If I had to guess, I'd say it was on old estate at one time...School did not seem to be in session, but I talked my way in and got up to the theater to soak up the vibe, hear the echoes, and try to imagine them rockin the joint out for a few days.

after a brief walk around the campu, back to the Hilltop Inn to rest up for another night of GPTN !!

well, I just realized that i posted comments about the 2/23 show under Soulcats 2/24 inquiry...sorry..

Here is the the REAL 2/24 post!

Headed back to the Opera House to catch the second night. First things first, check in with my bud Jen at the merch table to see how she's feeling. Not good, worse then yesterday, drinkin lots of OJ. Her mother Betsy comes by, says hi, and raves about the opener, a 10 year old guitarist that is apparently personality plus, and heads right back in. MR P comes by a minute later and tells me I will only last one song with this kid named Yann...

I go in and sit at the back. Yann announces it's his final song, the audience groans, and he says "No, I've gotta get home and go to bed. I have been unable to sleep, I've been so nervous" Crowd laughs, song starts, I leave, and go out and tell Sparky he was generous with the one song... Every one agree, however; that the kid will be quite the stage presence in 10 years.

I wander in and get my seat, in the 6th row, exactly 4 rows back from my seat last night. The pair of seats on my left, on the aisle, remain empty all night..

The first thing I notice is that Matt's bass drum head now has graphics, the same as one of the new T-shirts. It has Grace Potter in an arch on the top. The center is an owl and the the words "and the" and the bottom arch is Nocturnals. Turns out this was done Friday in Sparky's workshop and looks great. Don't know if this the official logo now, but it looks great.

The Band took the stage, and again Grace started a capella with her tambourine, only this time opener was Long Way, one of 5 songs added that were not on last nights setlist.

Gone missing tonight were Follow Me Down, Lovers Lost and Found, Mystery Train, 2:22, Apologies, and Skinny Woman.

Interesting tonight was during songs 2 through 5 they only really stopped once, after Left Behind, otherwise they wound down, kinda free-formed a bit, picked a line and coalesced into the next song. Very cool. Grace appreciated that it was noticed after the show.

Why I love these guys dept. Got another reason tonight, the new extended B-3 opening to Crazy Parade. I pointed it out after the show and Grace beamed.

Grace's introduction to Stop The Bus noted that tonight was GPTN actual 3rd anniversary, "but only Matt and I are left"
She went on to talk about they "take to the road like ice cream to a cone" and having played Nashville recently and they were kinda scared or apprehensive about playing there, but that she thought the B-3 might have eased the acceptance vs. "some guitar playin girl"

Bus was followed by the World Premier of "Hiding Out in My Hometown". Grace spoke of being interviewed recently and the question asked was how growing up in Vermont affected her music. "I don't want them to write about it, because I don't want anyone else to move here." after much applause "This is dedicated to everybody in Waitsfied"

I think it was this song, as they were getting the guitar on Grace, Scott got this wry, bemused look and went to the mic and said " It's more volume all the time with this one" as Grace looked at the crowd, smiled, and yelled MORE!

Both nights featured Scott's song "I Ain't Changing" (not for you or no one else. The only way I'm changin is if it's for myself.....Amen, brother!) It was during this song I realized for the first time, that I was listening to Grace's sweet voice harmonize, not take a lead. To me, as a serial attendee, that was actually a very exciting moment. Because it must be the ONLY time she is not lead, and Lord knows, we can always use more Harmony in this world....

Final song featured an extended piano open that went into several lines on House of The Rising Sun before easing into Gumbo Moon.

Encore was Piss on Your Hand. Somehow I knew Young Yann would not be brought out to join in on this one!

And for the second night in a row, they formed a line, took a bow, and exited the stage.

And for once, this was NOT a venue that rushed anybody out, at all, allowing people to hang around until all the band came out and anyone that wanted an autograph got one. They had a special poster printed for the 2 night stand, and a lot of peeps got signatures by all four.

Scott's Mom and Dad were here (Scott looks just like his Dad), Sparky and Peggy Potter were here, and Jens mother Betsy was here with her guy as well. Family Night...

Grace let it slip about next Vermont show: they likely were going to headline a show on the Green in Shelburne, VT this summer and they were wowed because Al Green had headlined this a few years back, "so everybody come!"

There are moments and then there are MOMENTS..

Some MOMENTS happen by chance. Like being in the audience when Grace announced a record deal and snaring the champagne glass used to to toast. Now that is a MOMENT with a MEMENTO)

Some MOMENTS are thrust upon us.

And some MOMENTS can be forecast. Like the first time Grace sings "Gumbo Moon" in New Orleans. I decided that was a MOMENT I wanted to see, along with about 24 others...

I told friends I wanted to see 2 powerhouses.. Grace and Katrina. Grace was great; Katrina was evil and kicked ass.

I decided to head first to the Fairground, where JazzFest is held. I was there in 2004 to see Susan Tedeschi and Joss Stone. The area was hard hit, trash filled the sidewalks and gutters, and water lines 3-4 feet high surrounded every home.

As I headed south towards the French Quarter, there were no stores open, and none of the traffic signals worked. Stop signs, place on little easels about 3 feet high, were the sole traffic controls in place.

Heading into the FQ, I drove by HOB and the band was unloading the trailer. I resist the urge to roll down the window and ask a stupid question like "Hey, where's the HOB?" as I want to surprise at the show.

I find my "hotel" on St Ann. As well as I did with Orbitz on my first visit, this one is bad... To get to my room, go down a narrow passageway to the back of "the annex" where double doors, covered by the standard louvred outer doors, are the only window to my 7 x 11 room with a shower tucked under a staircase...I'll survive.

I walk the 10 blocks down to HOB for the 7 PM doors and discover it is 8 PM with a 10:15 time for GPTN, so I walk back to my room to chill for while and then return later, have dinner next door, and then enter the Parish while the opener performs for a crowd of about 10. Jen freaks out when I appear at the merch table and we catch up on the Colorado swing.

Aspen was great, the club in Vail was a rickety 2nd floor venue where the floor bounced up and down so bad that the band strapped the amps to the speakers. Fort Collins was so-so and Fox Theater in Boulder was a radio freebie, and not much merch was sold to the freebie crowd. Steamboat Springs was cancelled. Luckily, the Belly Up in Aspen wondered if they could come back and headline, and the owner put them up in his home. Per Matt and Scott, the place was unfreakinbelievable, the owner is a biggie in one of the pro wrestling leagues, a huge home filled with one of a kind rarities, like 4 Beatles albums signed by each of the Fab Four.

The headliner of trhe show at the LA Troubador had to cancel, and this was a disappointment, as they have yet to perform for everyone at their California label. There were 5 days between Aspen and NO shows.

So they filled the long trip from Colorado to NO with a side trip to Austin, a favorite stop. A Vermonter has settled there and has a great BBQ joint that they like, and they also visited a sweet guitar shop. Grace bought a Gibson (that she christened on Every Mile), Scott bought a GIbson (that he broke already) and Bryan bought a 74 Gibson SJ "the Paul", a smaller version of The Les Paul. He hasn't had a guitar since picking up the bass 10 years ago, and wanted one to play with. Matt saved some money by not buying any drums...

I was sitting in a plush chair at the back of the club when the band came out. Heading forward, I joined 24 others as Grace opened with "Nothing But The Water" Oddly, the crowd did not press to the edge of the stage but hung about 10 feet back. Highlights of the evening included "Treat Me Right", Lovers Lost and Found", and "Ticket to The Show" with Bryan featured. Also a highlight was Grace's between songs comments. Particularly poignant was her intro to closer "Gumbo Moon" She said she had written it when she was 16 years old, dreaming about it during cold winter nights in The Mad River Valley, and what an honor and thrill it was to finally perform in in New Orleans. Now that was a MOMENT.

The small crowd coaxed 'em back out for an encore, and Grace wondered if they should do the "potty song", delivering "Piss on You Hand" to great delight.

After the show, breaking down, the band had a chance to speak with several in the crowd. Grace came out and after a few minutes yelled ""Hey, is that Van the Man?" and came and gave me a big hug. While talking a woman approached and wanted grace to sign her....ummm, er....ahem.... boob. Grace laughed, agreed, and I ran to get my camera. The whole band signed "Princess Bodani's" breasts and I got a great pic of them all with what shall henceforth, and forevermore, be known as a mammograph, and shall one day come to be listed in Websters thusly:

After the trailer was loaded, hmmmm, what to do? What else, head over to Bourbon Street! But first, the van and trailer have to get back to the hotel, so we all pile in, and cruise the Quarter, semi-aimlessly, until we get the right combination of street block and one way street and discover that the Hotel has saved space out front by putting out several orange traffic cones, each with a hand lettered sign that said "Reserved for Rock Stars" This brought laughter as I jumped out to get a picture.

Everyone but Grace headed up to their rooms to drop stuff off, and we hung on the sidewalk till they returned, and then the band, soundguy Mark, and myself headed a few blocks south to Bourbon. We settled in to "The Old Absinthe House, est. 1807" and got a round of drinks. Matt went immediately to the juke box with the excellent mix of Led Zep's "Dazed and Confused", ZZ Top's "Cheap Sunglasses", and Bill Withers "Use Me" which has snuck into a song recently as a tease. We closed it down, and headed out ont the street. A guy in a suit (!) walked by us and flashed a copy of Nothing But The Water. He had found his way into the show and bought the CD, so I went after him, got Grace to come back, and got a great shot of Grace, the guy in a suit/tie/mardigras beads and the CD.

We went into another, little, bar for a drink and the band was just returning for a final mini set to end the night. Grace pranced, Matt danced, and we all sang along, LOUDLY, to a finale of Ike and Tina Turner's "Proud Mary"

When he found out they had performed at HOB, barband guy said "you should have told us, its a New Orleans tradition to share the stage with other musicians." Now THAT would have been a MOMENT!!

After this bar closed, Scott, Jen and Mark, decided to head home, while Matt, Grace, Bryan, and two babes in flouncy dresses headed down Bourbon to find another open joint. I headed with them, and the bar was on St Ann's. two blocks from my room, which I headed for, back at 3:15 AM. A 22 hour day for me.

Encouraged to consider heading over to Jacksonville for their opener for Robert Cray, I was up after about 5 hours and found a library with web access in The Garden District. Adding it all up, the cost of a one way car and one way flight etc, etc, it was gonna be $500+ which I decided would be best put to use for future exploits and MOMENTS.

I decided to stick with my original plan, which was to head to Gulport/Biloxi area for the day try to grasp Katrina's wrath.
